The Girl In The Corner: chapter 1

I fiddled with the key and finally unlocked the door. I stepped in the house and inhaled the smell of faded memories. I set down my jacket and brush my cocoa brown hair behind my ears. I looked in each room to find that no one was home. I climbed the stairs to my room and looked at the note. It read 'Sunny, Took mom to the hospital for a check up be back by 10 Love Mom and Dad.' I sighed and put the letter down. The 5th time this month mom had to go up for another check up at the Chemo level in the hospital. My mom Wendy Lee Freeman was deemed with Cancer about two years ago. First the doctors told us that she was getting better and now they tell us she's doing "OK" My father Trent Marten Freeman worked at a supply store. He always got mad at me for not doing something right or just because there was no one else to yell at when he had had a bad day. I headed for the answering machine to check for any messages. I saw it flashing. I pressed the button.

"Sunny it's your father your mom's cancer has spread she's in surgery right now come to the hospital right when you get home." My heart stopped, or at least that's what it had felt like. I didn't wait for the next message. I got on my bike and rode the two miles to the hospital in breaking time. I didn't mind to lock my bike I just threw it by the bike cage. I ran into the hospital without a breath. I ran up to the desk where a lady gave me a weird look. She was trying to talk to me but I cut her off.

"Wendy…Freeman…what…room?" I practically yelled it at the poor women in between breaths she looked at the paper.

"Room 173…but you can't…" I didn't wait for her to finish her sentence I rushed down the halls. I couldn't wait for the elevator I just climbed the 3 stories. I finally got to the hallway I looked at the numbers on the doors. I looked at them until I saw my father talking to the doctor shaking his head and walking away. The doctor was walking my way so I ran up to him.

"Wendy Freeman is…she…" I couldn't manage to get the words out. A one syllable word with such a powerful meaning.

"She didn't make it through surgery…I…I'm sorry she didn't make it." I looked at him as if he was joking. Any moment now my mom would walk out of the door smiling at me and we would all go home and things would be back to normal but she never did come out of that hospital room. For some reason I didn't cry. I had cried when I had found out she had cancer, but I didn't cry. I felt as though she didn't want me to cry so I stood there not knowing what to do. I looked at my dad. He was talking to a doctor trying to hold back the tears.

"Why…why my mom?" I whispered to no one but my self. I walked down all the stairs. I walked out until I reached the bike cage. I picked up my bike and rode home. I sat in my room for days after that. I occasionally came downstairs to eat or go to the bathroom. Neither my dad nor I spoke to the other. It went like this for endless weeks. I didn't attend my mom's funeral. I had stayed home and watched re-runs of I Love Lucy. I sat on my bed without a thought. Like a toy that no one cared about anymore. I didn't talk to anyone or go to school. It seemed nothing in my life was worth worrying about. My dad came home one day he was in a weird mood. He walked up the stairs into my room.

"Sunny what did you do today?"

"Nothing why?"

"Didn't you do that yesterday too?"

"Well I'm not finished yet." My dad gave me an annoyed look.

"That's my point you can't just do nothing all the time. You have to do other things and well I think that since you can't find anything to do here I would like you to go live with my old collage roommates for the summer. They have a boy your age and lots of other children." I just sat there ignoring him. "Well don't say anything now because you have to pack you're going tomorrow."I looked up to him with my mouth wide open. "I knew you'd like the idea!" He strolled out my room whistling some unknown tune. I stood up and started shoving clothes into a duffel bag. I opened a suitcase and put more clothes in there. I grabbed my white backpack and put my make-up, CD player, magazines & the picture of my mom in it. I put my laptop into its carry on bag. I put them by the door downstairs and put on my pajamas. I climbed into bed watching infomercials.

"Honey come on you only have two hours until we leave." I fluttered my eyes open to see my dad walking out of my room. I moaned and look at the clock. It read 6:32 am. I rolled out of bed climbing on my floor.
