End of Year Letter

Dear Parents and Students,

No school days left!!! We are done and as you read this final entry, graduation for our 6th graders will be over and all of you will have started your Summer Vactation.... and so have I. I am very proud of all our students in how each have worked hard to make this a very sucessful year. Each one of our students contributed to our many community service projects this past year. Our 6th grade GSP/FEEP recently completed an all night walk-a-thon "Relay For Life" where they have raised over 600 dollars for breast cancer research. Of course I congratulate all our GSP/FEEP students for conducting such a sucessful Christmas Food Drive. We collected enough can food so we were able to provide food for 10 Fairglen families. Along with this cannned food, our PTO pitched in and gave each family a turkey!!!

Our Primary GSP helped Mr. Dooley raise money for the "The Presidential Afghan Children's Fund. Our Primay students created an animated film to help promote this effort. Their film was shown regulary school wide. Mr. Dooley raised over 500 dollars with the help of our students! In addition our Primarys also created a film about Dr. Suess for "Read Across America Week. (for more info on primary projects keep on reading about the "Cities and the Big Dig.")

Our Fifth Graders created and led Fairglen's Project 911 Fireman's Relief Fund where we raised over $1,300 that was turned over to Cocoa's Fire Chief at our Fairglen Patriotic Celebration that was organized by our 5th and 6th grade GSP/FEEP.(scroll down for more info!)

Our sixth grade "Puppet Ears" have created five Character Education films. Their last film promoted the character trait of Integrity. Their previous film featured the trait "Caring" and featured the Central Brevard Humane Society as its subject. They have also done films on the traits of: Fairness, Responsibilty, and Friendship. We have created a video library to be used in future years. (Go to our TV production page to see some images of these movies!)

With the school year behind us, we can look at our GSP/FEEP competition victories. The Tropicana 4H Public Speaking Contest school level winners Jeremy in Fifth Grade and Jaime in sixth grade placed as finalists in both the area and county competitions. Our Odyssey of the Mind teams did a fantastic job at regional competition on March 13, 2002.. Congratulations to the Flint team who took FIRST place and to both my teams, the Minnys who took third and the Eplos who came in fifth. Congratulations also to the DeCandio team who came in 7th and did a great job for a first time team. In Addition, Fairglen sent two teams to State competition which took place on on April 12

Our Fourth graders, in prep for FCAT WRITES, have received extensive writing lessons team taught by Mrs. Greogory and myself. These lessons have focused on the narrative and expositive writing styles. (See my essay page for more info.) In additon to writing, Mrs. Gregory and I have also teamed together to work with students using the Jr. Great Books (JGB) reading series culminating with our Jr. Great Books discusions. JGB is a reading program, adopted by the county, for high readers that provide unusual topics that lend themselves to interesting discusions. Students are trained to back opinions with support from the text. Both Mrs. Gregory and I have received many hours of inservice to present this program to our students.

Our 4th, 5th grade students have finished working on our history movies. This project required our students to find an event in history, research, develop a point of view and create a movie that teaches others about that event. We have finished the editing and post production phase of this project and we have evaluated our films. Please send in a VHS tape if you would like a copy of our student's work!!!!

Our Super Sixth Graders have worked hard to make the graduation ceromony something special and memorable. First they are created an end of the year sixth grade newspaper they have titled "Our Last Year Here." This paper was given out to all sixth grade students at graduation. Our Sixth graders also created the individual "class banners" that were on display as the back drop of the end of the year dance and the graduation ceromony. It was these same students that have created the school theme of the year. Next school year will be "The Year of the Patriot. The banners that our students made reflect that theme.

Again, I wish you all a safe and fun summer vacation. You have all been wonderful!!!! Sixth graders good luck next year in middle school. To all over my returning students, I look forward to working with you next school year.
As always, stay informed and be involved!!!!

Sincerely,
Mr. Gronich

"Cities and the Big Dig"

Our primary students have finished creating their "cities." These cities were built from the geography up.(Scroll down for some examples of student cities!) Our students learned Maslov's Universal Hiarchy of Needs. Having completed this unit, our students now have a greater understaning of cities and themselves as individuals. Below are artfacts our students created from their cities. Each student created several artfacts from the cities they created. They then burried them around the school and made maps. These maps were exchanged among students and each went out looking to discover eachothers hidden mysteries. Based on the material of the object, size, design, artwork, language, etc. our students job was to infer what type of people created the object and what the artifact might have been used for. At the end of this project, we will have formal presentations showing our findings. We will then compare our student findings with that of the creators of the cities.
