Come on In!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to Fairglen’s GSP/FEEP. I hope you all are looking forward to having a great school year. This year is a year of change. I am very excited to have Mrs. Cline as our new principal. Her philosophy regarding our program is to make Fairglen’s GSP/FEEP stronger and more dynamic than we have been in a long time. To accomplish this our schedule has changed.

Monday - I serve as writing coach for all of fourth grade.
Tuesday - 3rd and 4th grade full day
Wednesday - 5th grade full day
Thursday - 6th grade full day
Friday - Primary 120 minutes

I am thrilled that our Third graders will receive a full day. I am also excited about our sixth graders coming on Thursday as opposed to Friday. That change along with a new media specialist handling sound set ups will result in a more stable class schedule less prone to cancellations!!!

On the downside our classroom has gotten smaller. We have been very lucky to occupy both sides of a double classroom. The wall divider that did not divide us is now in place. This has been necessary due to the many needed classrooms. A smaller room will not stop us from working on our famous projects, but we will have to be more organized and use space more wisely.

Like each year in the past we will start the year, goal setting, planning and creating classroom Preambles that will serve as the foundation for the rest of the school year. Our goal setting requires students to have a say in what they want to accomplish, what steps will be needed, and what criteria will be developed to judge success. Our students will in the set up of our room plan procedures and rules to allow us to best make use of our now limited space. Our class Preambles, like our national Preamble to the Constitution, will define each grade levels ideal class.

To get an idea of what is in store for this year you just have to look at this web page and see what we have done last year. OM, Tropicana 4H Public Speaking, TV Production, film projects, Food drives, Relay For life and more. We have a smaller classroom , however what we can achieve is not confined within walls.

Sincerely,
Mr. Gronich

In Review:

Dear Parents & Students,

Congratulations to my super sixth graders. I have worked with many of you going back to 2nd and 3rd grade. I have watched you grow and I am very proud of each one of you.

You all have worked hard to make the end of this year a complete success. Your final project, the Sixth Grade Banners came out great. These banners along with the theme you created for next year "A Year To Imagine" will set the tone for our next school year. Thank you for giving up your Saturday to get these banners finished. Again, I wish you all the best in all you do.

Our Fourth and Fifth Graders have out done themselves by creating the best Egg Destroyers in years!!!! Our students presented these projects for their grade level classmates and thrilled many by the mess their machines made.

Our 4th, 5th, 6th graders have studied ours and other government systems. We have created several creative films on history as well as specific aspects of our government. We have investigated current events and world affairs. We have had productive and rewarding year. Finally, the end of the year came too early for our primary students. We are still in the filming process of their video story books. Any book that has was not filmed this year will be finished at the beginning of the next school year.

Please read our student recognition list above and our review page below to see in detail what we have accomplished this year.

!!!In Review!!!

On the weekend of April 11th and 12th, many of our sixth graders took part in Relay for life. This was a great success. We raised 1,070.00 to donate to the American Cancer Society.

Our Fourth Through Sixth Graders have studied the events leading up to the war in Iraq. We have watched Colin Powell's presentation to the UN and have evaluated his evidence for going to war. We have studied the geopolitical history of the region, and have investigated the pros and cons of being in a war with Iraq. Our students then have written persuasive essays defending their position on this important topic. Our fourth and fifth graders have also created GSP/FEEPs famous egg destroyers!!!!, Our Primary students are currently creating on video story books. (read more on this in the primary section.)

Since Spring break we have finished hosting our fifth and sixth grade school wide Tropicana 4H Public Speaking Contests. Congratulations to Karen Pack and Brianna Brandon, our 5th and 6th grade winners. These students went on to represent Fairglen at the county competition on March 27th. OM competition was held on February 22nd and we were in full gear staying after school and working on Saturdays. This work paid off in that all our OM teams did a wonderful job. Of course, FCAT followed right behind that Our 4th graders took the FCAT writes on February 11, and all our students took the full FCAT between March 3rd through the 14th.

Our Fourth Graders have finished producing video Integrity Plays. These short films have been shown on morning announcements to teach about integrity. These films have and will be used in the future to support Character Education.

Our Primary students have started a school wide project that will help the Coons Run Animal Sanctuary/Central Brevard Humane Society. These students have researched the organizations and have brainstormed different activities that will educate Fairglen and show others how they can help in this effort.

Our Primarys have also developed our "Science Car." This car required students to use different forms of energy to power the vehicle. This "Science Car" required our students to use the scientific method. Thus, we were reinforcing Science Fair techniques that were being used in the regular classroom.

All our primary through sixth grade students have worked hard to learn and gain a deep understanding about the history and values of our American government. One of my favorite guests, Mrs. Riconte a former Romanian, talked to our students about what life was like under Caucescue one of the world's worst tyrants. They learned that there really are places in the world both past and present that did not allow for individual rights or respect the dignity of each citizen.

All of our students have created creative projects showing their understanding of our government.(read below for more info!! All of our students are also writing - showing deeper meaning, insight and research to create essays that go beyond FCAT Writes.

Our Fourth through sixth grade have studied the concept of credibility, objectivity, and bias by examining what makes a source credible. As part of the study of current events, we have used Weekly Reader and other common sources to show how biased news just may be. While bias in itself is not bad, we are all have biases, we do need to recognize bias and objectivity when making a judgment of the overall credibility of a source. This type of reading along with Jr. Great Books allow students to use and develop their critical thinking skills. Each student in Fourth through Sixth grade also wrote an in depth essay regarding a concept learned in our government lessons and wrote "point of view" essays citing sources to back up the student's thesis. These point of view essays led to the concept of the persuasive essay. Which each of my fourth through sixth grade student created. Our school wide theme this year is "The Year of the PATRIOT." (Peace and Tolerance Reign Indefinitely Over Tyranny)Our sixth grade GSP/FEEP created this theme last school year, and I am thrilled about how are tying this theme in with our course work.

Our busy Fourth graders have learned about the history of our American Government, from the pre Revolutionary War era, through the Articles of Confederation, the drafting and ratification of our Constitution and an in depth study of our Bill of Rights. The final project to show mastery of this subject matter will be for our students to choose how best to illustrate what they learned. Our students have created, posters, Patriotic Robots which taught others about our three branches of government. Students also created plays that incorporated their robot. In addition students have written "Constitutional Essays" on a specific part of our form of government or a concept of freedom. These essays are different from FCAT form essays in that they require research and are written from draft to published product. Finally our students have studied our political parties and their philosophies and have written a paper of what best represents them: a Republican or a Democrat.

Fourth through sixth grade

Our students saw how today’s headlines tie directly to the Constitution. The Pledge of Allegiance, Affirmative Action, The Patriot Act, cloning and other topical issues have been studied using when available primary source information. The primary source is the direct writings of our founding fathers or others in the form of letters and articles, speeches or video clips.

Our Fifth grade has finished off their government projects. These projects included movies topics about the Preamble to the specific parts of our Constitution such as the 1st & 8th Amendment. We also had a movie on the meaning of the Declaration of Independence.

Our Sixth Graders have been busy working on projects for the Indian Trail, our morning TV show. Features like Great Grannies Goodness, Inside Daniel's Brain, Jeremy's World of Stuff, Spotlight on Fairglen are Student Showdown are just a few of the projects that our students have produced, edited and aired school wide. Our Sixers have written "point of view essays" where opinion is backed up with cited research. Congratulations to all our sixth graders who participated in our speech contest and a special congratulations to Sophie who hosted both the fifth and sixth grade speech contest. Our Sixth graders are currently working hard on their OM projects as part of class time, after school and on weekends. Thank you parents for your support on this project!

Current Events

All Fourth through Sixth grade students will study current events as a vehicle to develop critical and analytical thinking skills as well as creating well informed citizens. Credibility of sources, bias and motive will also be carefully examined when studying the media in which our students get their news stories.

Jr. .Great Books

All Third Through Sixth grade students will participate in Jr. Great Book (JGB) discussion groups. JGB require students to read stories twice and take notes on which they read. students then take part in a discussion that adheres to a variety of rules. All of which lead to a very meaningful discussion and a deeper meaning of the story. To date our Fourth graders have participated in the first story of the semester, Fifth and Sixth grade will be doing a Jr. Great Book discussion after Christmas.

Community Service

All GSP/FEEP students will take part in several community service projects this year. From Primary to sixth grade, students will identify problems and work toward creating solutions /and or providing service to others to make Fairglen and our community a better place in which to live. We just finished working on a Thanksgiving Food Drive! Our primary students are working now on a project to support Coons Run Animal Sanctuary/Central Brevard Humane Society.
