Many Thanks and Blessings to the women that
share their experiences here amongst
these pages!

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?
(endo,fibroids,etc.)
*Sterilized in 1986 at age 29 following birth of
fourth child. During procedure they perforated my
uterus (American hospital). Suffered bowel and
chronic abdominal pain from then on - sex was so
painful it almost made the sterilization
unnecessary :-). Nobody could do anything for
me - said they could find nothing wrong. In 1988
finally I was given a lap (British hospital) -
they found my bowel and uterus were "stuck"
together (adhesions I was told - but did they
stitch the bowel to the uterus when repairing the
perforation during sterilization which is the only
reason I can think of to have suffered so much
pain??). They also found large amounts of scar
tissue which were "cleaned up". Pain returned
within a year. Again nothing was done. In October
1990 British hospital found ovarian cyst - size of
ping pong ball - told me to think about hysterectomy.
I had had enough - wanted it done. Went to American
hospital - was admitted in November and had total
hysterectomy November 3 1990 - I was 33 years old.
Cyst by now was size of large oatmeal cookie. They
took everything - uterus, ovaries and cervix.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what
to expect after surgery and what the long term
effects might be on your health by your doctor?
**Not at all - I was told my quality of life would
improve - side effects would be minimal.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your
information on hysterectomy?
*A booklet sent to me by my mother. No other
information seemed to be available.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you start using them?
*Started on the pill at age 16. Was on various types
of pill on and off until I was 26.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
* Both

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive
diseases? If so, what ones and which relatives?
* None

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
**10 years on November 3 2000

8.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?
**Yes and cervix

9.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
**Initially there was fatigue, memory loss, lack of
concentration, weight gain. Prescribed Premarin
1.25mg - quality of life/sex did improve due to no
pain but I was still tired, couldn't remember things
and had a very short attention span and could not
lose the weight. More recently though, in addition
to the above, I am suffering from joint pain - knees
specifically - scar tissue type pain, especially
when initially sexually aroused, and the worst of
all - yeast infection type symptoms almost
continually which are only slightly helped by
Diflocan/Gyno Daktarin pessaries and Canesten cream
(oh yes I use ALL three!). Overly dry vagina which
does not help the yeast infections when having sex
no matter how much lubricant is used. Breast
tenderness on one breast - feels like a bad bruise -
like I have been punched. Abdomen protrudes - was
told it was something all women got - even though
after 4 children I had a flattish stomach - for the
past 10 years my stomach has never been even near
flat. Exercises cause pain and seem to inflame scar
tissue. Have been told by a nurse that recurrent
yeast infections could be due to a sensitive ph
balance within my vagina - ok so what can I do
about it I asked - eat live yogurt I was told!

ONE GOOD THING - no more periods and no more mood swings!

10.)What if anything has made them better?
**Nothing so far - but I am starting to work on
remedies - would prefer natural ones rather than
synthetic. For the yeast infections - well let's
just say that me and live yogurt are inseparable
at the moment-my latest attempt at ridding myself
from this affliction :-). Think I have shares in
the companies that produce it! If anyone has any
suggestions I would be more than happy to hear them.

11.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that
did not treat you with respect in regard to your
difficulties? If yes, would you like to share
the experience?
**Prior to my hysterectomy and immediately after
there was no support and no respect. It was as if
my uterus/ovaries were spare parts - of no use
especially as I no longer was able to have children.
I have not visited the doctor very much except for
the yeast infections and I have only just found out
that HRT is associated with yeast infections - oh
well better late than never! I am just now starting
on the road to try and sort everything out because
the problems are becoming unbearable. I hope the
female nurse I am going to see will help and be
more understanding. I have been told she has
attended numerous courses on this subject - maybe
she has suffered herself?

12.)Are you currently using any form of hormone
replacement therapy? If so what?
**Premarin 1.25mg

13.)How are you feeling currently?
*Like crap! Yeast infection really does bring me
down, pain makes me so uncomfortable, joint pain in
my knees feels like arthritis, breast tenderness
worries me especially when there is an increased
risk of breast cancer after being on HRT for 10
years and I have hit that mark. Also, I enjoy sex
with my partner but the side effects of dryness and
yeast infections make me think - do I really want
to enjoy myself ever again or shall I become
celibate! More recently I just want to cry because
it is affecting my quality of life so much. I am
only 43, active, educated and want to enjoy life.
My children are grown so I should be able to live a
relatively carefree existence and enjoy myself.
But right now I am not. I have a loving partner and
he is helping me find out more information and
being very supportive - I am lucky in that respect
and thank him.

14.)Anything else you need or want to share??
**I also suffered from over-active thyroid prior
to hysterectomy. This was also removed (medically
by I-131 treatment) and I now take 75mg of thyroxin
daily. Don't know if that has any effect/conflict
with my HRT. Never been told - but I will ask.

The reason I mentioned I had been treated and had
surgery in both USA/UK hospitals was to show that
there really was no difference in the treatment
received. I am now living permanently in the UK.

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?
(endo,fibroids,etc.)
**I had severe periods for many years. Prior to my
surgery, I would be in bed for 2-3 days having
such pain that I couldn't even go to the bathroom.
I have a family history of female problems & my
mother, aunt & grandma all had hysterectomys before
they were 40. In doing a laparoscopy, they discovered
Ovarian cysts in both my ovaries & extensive
Endometriosis. One deciding factor in having the
surgery was health insurance. My husband is self-
employed & I was given lifetime waivers on
obtaining insurance for any female disorder due
to my past history & suspicion of endometriosis.
No one would cover it, ever, unless I went back to
work full time.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what
to expect after surgery and what the long term
effects might be on your health by your doctor?
**NO WAY! He never went into detail nor asked
about my medical history, just said that I'd have
to take hormone replacement, which I understood
long before it came to the point of having surgery.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your
information on hysterectomy?
**I really didn't get that much. The Dr did give
me some literature, that explained somewhat. My
mother gave me a book that was written in
1950something. Talk about outdated!! Since my
mother, grandmother & aunt all had it, I knew
somewhat of things, but nothing like I
experienced or am still experiencing.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you
start using them?
**Yes, off & on since I was 19 until the age of 29,
so about 10 years.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
**I actually had to use both because of the heavy
bleeding (I actually became anemic due to the
amount of blood I lost each month)

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with
reproductive diseases? If so, what ones and
which relatives?
**As I stated before, my mother had endometriosis
as well as her mother & her sister. My sister has
it along with having cervical precancer cells. My
other sister is suspected of having it, but won't
go get it checked out. I also have something called
Vulvar Dystrophy-not sure if that is related at all
& I still don't understand what & how & why I have it.

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
**My surgery was May 1999

8.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?
**Yes - I had a complete hysterectomy but they had
to leave the cervix in due to the short length of
time between surgeries.

9.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
**Physically: There is still numbness around the
incision area, I can poke a pin at it & I can't
feel that. I can't sneeze if I have to go to the
bathroom or I "dribble"!

Emotionally: I was having problems with hot
flashes, mood swings & I also had no sexual desire.
I also suffer from situational depression & having
to have the surgery meant never having another
child which wasn't something I was ready to come
to grips with but convinced myself I was, as my
husband didn't want any more children. He had had
a vasectomy 2 weeks after our last child was born.

10.)What if anything has made them better?
**Quite by accident, I was having a session with
my shrink & she started asking me all kinds of
questions that no other doctor did. She changed
all my meds & told me what I need to do (exercise,
diet change things like that) to make my life
better. Exercise has been the best thing of all.

11.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse
that did not treat you with respect in regard to
your difficulties? If yes, would you like to
share the experience?
**Yes, the day I went to get out my staples, my
husband & I had been fighting (his lack of not
understanding what I just went thru & not "getting
some") & I was very weepy, well, ok, I had been
crying a lot that day. When the nurse came in, she
started to ask me what was wrong & I started
crying. The Dr then came in and his first words
to me were "So, I hear we're a little moody today?
Are we taking our hormone pills??" I wasn't
impressed with him as the first surgery he was an
hour late, overslept!

12.)Are you currently using any form of hormone
replacement therapy? If so what?
**At first, he prescribed Premarin (the yellow
pill). Nothing else. Then when I saw the shrink,
she switched me to the patch, Vivelle. She also
ran tests for other hormones, my thyroid & some
other things. I am not one to take pills regularly,
so the patch was the greatest thing. She also
prescribed a baby aspirin a day as my Mother has
heart disease & apparently my risk has increased
since the surgery. I also take Celexa which helps
with the serotonin & the way the shrink explained
it to me, that is a direct cause of the hysterectomy.
And exercise.

13.)How are you feeling currently?
**Right now I feel the best that I have in a long
time. My lower abdomen is still numb & at times I
get twinges of pain around the incision. I have to
come with grips that my stomach will never look the
same no matter how many tummy crunches I do! That
really bothers me. The hot flashes have subsided
as well as the mood swings. I find I have lots more
energy since I switched meds (that happened early
this summer-a year after the surgery).

14.)Anything else you need or want to share??
**I don't if there is anything I need or want to
share, except one thing.

I wish there was a seminar of something that
husbands/boyfriends/significant others could
attend so they could know about all this. My
husband thinks I'm wacked half the time & the
other half I'm just crazy! He doesn't understand
that lack of sex drive due to the testosterone
level dropping, nor the fact that I feel like my
body is ugly now so my self esteem isn't all that
great.

15.)Do you have a Web Site/Home Page? If so, leave
me the url I'd love to visit !
**Not at the present. But hopefully soon.

For Partial Oophorectomy

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?
(endo,fibroids,etc.)
**Two years ago I had severe pain in my right side.
Thought it was appendicitis. Went to the Hospital
and they told me I had a cyst that had basically
cut off the blood to my ovary. They did immediate
surgery and removed my right ovary and fallopian tube.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to
expect after surgery and what the long term effects
might be on your health by your doctor?
**No, I wasn't told anything.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your
information on hysterectomy?
**Internet

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you
start using them?
**Yes, I started on birth control when I was 15,
I'm now 26 and still taking them.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
**Yes

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with
reproductive diseases? If so, what ones and
which relatives?
**Yes, my mother is prone to cysts.

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
**Approx. 2 years.

8.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?
**Just 1 ovary was removed.

9.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
**Since surgery I have had severe decrease in sex
drive, night sweats, mild depression and fatigue.

10.)What if anything has made them better?
**Nothing.

11.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that
did not treat you with respect in regard to your
difficulties? If yes, would you like to share the
experience?
**No, I never thought that these problems could be
associated with the surgery until finding your
website so I never asked a Doctor or Nurse about them.

12.)Are you currently using any form of hormone
replacement therapy? If so what?
**None.

13.)How are you feeling currently?
**Like crap. 14.)Anything else you need or want to share??
**When I found you're web site I cried. My husband
and I have been having difficulties due to my lack
of libido and I had no idea what was wrong with
me. No Doctor had told me that I may have problems
after they took out my ovary so I never suspected
that was part of the problem.
