*For Hysterectomy

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer,
etc.)?
*Fibroids and thickening of the uterine lining. The Dr said that I had a 20%
chance of cancer in my lifetime, and that he felt that was quite high.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery
and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*Yes, he was very good at telling both my husband and I what was going on
and what to expect during and after surgery. I had read enough to know
what to possibly expect after surgery regarding sexual function.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*From the Dr who did the surgery and LOTS of reading on the Internet and
at the library.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime? If yes for how long
total? At what age did you start using them?
*For about 3 years - started at age 23.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
*Both

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?
*No

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*Dec 18th , 1997

8.)What problems are you experiencing?
*Sexual desire went out the door. We had a good sex life. After surgery
I had no desire what so ever to have sex. I found I could climax, but as
far as feeling when we were having intercourse, there was none, and the
dryness is really bad. Also, my hair started to really thin out.

9.)What if anything has made them better?
*I told my Dr when I went in for my 6 month checkup and he put me on
Estrat HS, which has at least made me desire sex again up to a point.
But, I still have very little feeling when we have intercourse, and that
I really miss. Also, my hair is coming back, but I am also taking silica
to help that along.

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties? If yes, tell me about it.
*Yes - My GP sent me to emergency last Oct when my bleeding had gotten
out of hand. He had wanted me to see a specific Dr. This Dr decided
that I needed surgery ASAP. My GP had felt that I needed a D & C when he
sent me. I was sitting in the hall and could hear the surgeon talking to
my GP. He was very insistent that he was correct. I made an appointment
to see him. When I went in he wanted to schedule surgery at once. I
asked him about losing sexual feeling, and stated that I had uterine
contractions when I climaxed, and the removal of my uterus concerned me.
He tapped me on the forehead, and said "If you have any problems, it will
be all up here" Needless to say, I was done with him. What a jerk !!!! I
found my own Dr, who ran further tests, and determined the real reason
for the bleeding. He was a caring Dr, who talked to my husband and I
together every time I went into his office. And, he did a great
job with the surgery.

11.)Anything else you need or want to share??
*Just that women need to be more aware of how their sexual life can
change. Although it is wonderful not to be bleeding all the time
(which did impact our sex life before) I really miss the feelings I
had, and might have chosen to wait just a little longer to have it done.

For Hysterectomy
1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer, etc.)
*Fibroids, scar tissue from 2 c-sections.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery and
what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*Definitely not.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*A friend had gotten a hysterectomy a few months prior to my surgery. She
had only good things to say about having the surgery done. Like an idiot, I
listened to her with the thought that all women were alike "in there". She
was completely pleased and felt like a new and freer woman. I did research
at the library after my surgery and most recently research via internet.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you start using them?
*Yes. I began using them at age 16 (after the birth of my first son). I used
them for probably only one year and then again for a short period after my
second son was born at age 21. I didn't like birth control pills so I would
have to guess I used them at most for maybe 4 years.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation? *Both

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?
If so, what ones and which relatives? *No

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*4-1/2 years

8.)What problems are you experiencing?
*Bone, joint, muscle pain and immobility. Loss of sexual desire.
Painful intercourse, vaginal damage. Chronic constipation and pain in bowels.
Loss of short term memory. Emotional and personality changes, despondency,
irritability, anger, reclusiveness. Sleeplessness. Constant Backaches. Panic
attacks. Pelvic pain especially after intercourse to the point that I MUST sit
down. Frequent swelling and hardness in lower abdomen. Always cold, even on hot
days. Fatigued (easily and sometimes extremely). Just an overall sense of not
being healthy or strong anymore.

9.)What if anything has made them better? *Nothing.

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you with
respect in regard to your difficulties? If yes, tell me about it.
*Yes, after my surgery, while still in the hospital, I was in major pain, more
so than with my c-sections. I mentioned this to my doctor and he said that was
because I had an internal organ removed and that was to be expected. However,
the pain med he prescribed was the morphine pump which did not work. I pleaded
for shots which were prescribed and given every 4 hours, and NOT before 4 hours.
By about the third hour I was in pain again and would ask the nurses for another
shot. They would drag their feet getting the shot to me. By the time the shot was
given to me, I was in total pain and it would take at least one hour to take affect.
When I asked for a shot, one nurse asked me, "Just where is your pain?" I was
flabbergasted! I just had my stomach cut open and my uterus removed! Where did
she think my pain was? I feel that my doctor and the nurses in charge of my care
were totally disregardful of the pain I was suffering and did not believe me
even when I pleaded to the point of tears with them for help.

11.) Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy? If so what?
*None, I still have my ovaries, thank the Lord.

12.)How are you feeling currently? (I truly care!)
*Thank you for asking first of all........for the last three years I have gone to
the doctor complaining of fatigue, weakness, pain, sleeplessness, etc., he has run
tests and found absolutely nothing. I was beginning to feel like a hypochondriac
and getting quite depressed and discouraged. I was so excited when I found this
information on the internet! I now know that I am not abnormal or crazy which
makes me feel wonderful despite the post-hysterectomy symptoms I suffer with.

13.)Anything else you need or want to share??
*I am going to make an appointment with my doctor to educate him! Also, no two
women are alike, each person's side-affects will vary and some women may have
none while others have many. Don't base your decision to have surgery on the
outcome of a friend's surgery. Get all the facts about side-affects and
consider them first.

For Hysterectomy
1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer, etc.)
*Fibroids tumors on my uterus; lots and lots of scar tissue, constant pelvic
pain. My left ovary was attached to my intestines and my right ovary was
attached to my abdominal wall because of the adhesions. I was full of
adhesions. A 1 1/2 hour operation took over 3 1/2 hours.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery
and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*Somewhat (my Gynecologist told me that my HRT would be 6 months of hell)

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*My Gynecologist and my computer

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime? If yes for how
long total? At what age did you start using them?
*Yes, 3 1/2 years total... I started when I was 15 years old for my terrible
menstrual cramps, then stopped taking them around the age of 18, then I took
them for a little bit when i started having all my pelvic pain, etc.
*Pads

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?
*Yes, my mother had numerous cysts and had a sub-total hyst at age 40

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*A little over 3 months now, August, 1998 at age 26

8.)What problems are you experiencing?
*Achy feeling, Insomnia, depression, memory loss and tiredness.

9.)What if anything has made them better?
*Have not found anything yet I have tried Premarin 1.25mg, the Alora patch,
and now am on Estrace.

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties? If yes, tell me about it.
*I have been pretty lucky so far. I really liked my Gynecologist but because
of distance I started seeing my Family dr again for HRT. I am rethinking that
decision now. He just doesn't seem to take my complaints seriously.

11.)Anything else you need or want to share??
*I think that this will be very informative to any women that already has or
will be having a hysterectomy. I know that what I have found on my computer
has been a great help so far. I have been informed on many different
hormones that I could try and I will discuss this with my dr. If he does not
seem to take it seriously I will go elsewhere.
Thanks,
Kristi (Kke244@aol.com)

9.What if anything has made them better?
*The doctor prescribed vicoden for the pain and sleeping pills.

10.Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties? If yes, tell me about it.
*I am four weeks post hysterectomy. I had a vaginal hysterectomy and I
still have all my stitches except one that fell out the first week. I
am experiencing sharp pain from the stitches when I called the doctor he
said he had done 300 to 400 vaginal hysterectomies and none of them
complained about stitch pain. I told him the stitches were cutting in
and causing me to bleed and asked if he could remove them he said no
they would dissolve on their own . I am my own person I donít like
being compared to other people. I have made a decision not to see this
doctor anymore.

11. Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy? If so what?
*No I still have my ovaries.

12. How are you feeling currently? (I truly care!)
*I have pain from the stitches. If I move around a lot I have sharp
pains and cramps.

13. Anything else you need or want to share??
*After my experience with my doctor I wonít go to another doctor. I
will suffer in silence rather than be told the pain is just in my head.

For Hysterectomy

1.) What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer, etc.)
*I had cystic ovaries and fibroids. I had been on Prempro for 6 months
with continued bleeding.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after
surgery and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*My doctor was very open to questions and I think you would have
provided me with whatever information I requested. I didn't ask very
many questions, I was just anxious to get on with my normal life.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*I searched online several times and much to my dismay found 99%
negative feedback on hysterectomy.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you start using them?
*Yes, I used them for about 10 years.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
*Tampons

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive
diseases? If so, what ones and which relatives?
*My maternal grandmother died from cervical cancer. My mother died from
breast cancer. My paternal grandmother had a prolapsed uterus.

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*One month.

8.)What problems are you experiencing?
*Currently I am experiencing no problems. I am taking Premarin .625. I
sleep well at night. I am still able to obtain an orgasm, no vaginal
dryness. I have some abdominal itching but other than that I think that
I am very lucky and hope that it continues.

9.)What if anything has made them better?
*Nothing makes the itching better. I put lots of cream on my stomach
and I am waiting for it to cease itching.

10. Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat
you with respect in regard to your difficulties? If yes, tell me about it.
*Yes!!! The doctor that performed my surgery was my second doctor. I
had requested a second opinion because my first doctor withheld
information. I had a D & C done May 98 and a laparoscopy for abdominal
pain. No one was there for the doctor to talk to afterwards. At my
postop visit he did not have a hospital report and asked if he had
spoken with my husband, my fiance' was out of town at the time. He told
me that everything was fine. In October I was still having problems. I
went back and had an endometrial biopsy. I looked in my file and found
out that in May the doctor discovered a 7cm cyst on my left ovary and 2
smaller on my right. He stated that they looked suspicious and wanted
to remove them by an abdominal incision. He never followed up. When I
questioned him about it, he recommended that we do a ultrasound to make
sure they had gone away on their own. The good news was they had, the
bad news was that if he thought they were suspicious and didn't remove
them and if they had been malignant, I would have been 8 months without
treatment. He didn't have a problem with this.

11.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy? If so what?
*Premarin .625

12. How are you feeling currently? (I truly care!)
*Honestly, I am feeling very good. I went back to work after 10 days
and I had an abdominal hysterectomy with both ovaries, uterus and cervix
removed. I was playing golf after 3 weeks and the doctor told me if I
felt like it I could go back to playing in the roller hockey league,
I do feel like it. I guess my energy level is somewhat lower but
after major surgery that should be expected. I really don't feel that
much different and if my stomach didn't itch I couldn't complain about
a thing.

13.)Anything else you need or want to share??
*I just want to let the woman that are going to have a hysterectomy know
that occasionally there is a positive side and I think that it is how
you take things. It takes a strong mind and body to overcome these
things and I believe that you have to believe in yourself and heal
yourself from the inside. There is life after hysterectomy and while I
know that a lot of women have a very difficult time there are some of us
that do well afterwards. I am very glad that I went through with it.
Best of luck to all and if you have the love and support of family and
friends you will make it.

Thanks for sharing your positive hysterectomy experience :o)

I am 45 years old, two teenage children. I have had a hysterectomy
and abdominal surgery at the age of 24 for endometriosis.

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?(endo, fibroids, etc.)
*Fibroids (one the size of a soccer ball), cysts on both ovaries.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after
surgery and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*NO!!!

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*Mom, cousins, aunts, best friend and read books and links on internet.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you start using them?
*Doctor tried 22 years ago before endo. surgery, didn't tolerate the
pill for 2 weeks so he cut me open. Never on any since.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
*Both

6.Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive
diseases? If so, what ones and which relatives?
*Mother-fibroids; 2 maternal cousins -fibroids

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*6 1/2 months - hysterectomy ; 21 1/2 years - endomet.

8.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
*-Weight gain; inability to lose weight (in spite of going to exercise
classes, class at health food store to eat healthy)
-Water retention
-Depression (never experienced depression before)
-Mood swings
-Severe joint pain (can barely walk in the mornings)

9.)What if anything has made them better?
*-Went to an MD in an Integrated Med Center. Am on progesterone/estrogen
cream; calcium, magnesium, and glucosamine (for joint pain); vitamins
Bcomplex, E, C powder and multi vitamin; St. John's Wort/Kava Kava for
the depression &mood swings. Noticed a difference in the water retention
within the first week.

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat
you with respect in regard to your difficulties?
If yes, would you like to share it?
*I went to my Gyno and told him about my problems, how hard I was
exercising and watching what I ate, his response: "We think we are
exercising and eating right when we really aren't. I suggest you go
to Weight Watchers and exercise more. The Premarin has absolutely
nothing to do with it!"

11.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement
therapy? If so what? *Progesterone/Estrogen Cream

12. How are you feeling currently? (I truly care!)
*Having hot flashes again, but the dr. told me it would take several
months to adjust how much of each cream to get it just right for me.
Just knowing someone is listening to me and trying all these
alternative methods with me makes me feel better. IN just two weeks,
my pants are more loose and I have done nothing different in the
exercise/eating dept!!!! I have a pharmacist and a doctor who are
working with the creams individually to get the exact dose I need,
then will combine the two for me to use. They both LISTEN AND CARE!!!!!!
They don't treat me like I am a crazy, hormonal, depressed old woman!

13.)Anything else you need or want to share??
*Since this has happened to me, I have met many women experiencing this.
In the 2 weeks since I have seen a new doctor, learned about Estrogen
Dominance and the need for progesterone, I have been talking and giving
info to many of my friends and family, including a cousin who is an MD!
I want to make a difference. I want to help all these women who are
suffering and don't need to!!!!! I wish I could do something!!!!! I am
determined!

Thanks for listening and caring!

For Hysterectomy

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?(endo, fibroids, etc.)
*Endo. I had two laparoscopys and no pain decrease. My life was
going down the drain. The happy person I used to be was gone, so
took final step.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after
surgery and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?
*By my last gyno...yes. The two I had before him treated me like..
naturally the Endo was in my head.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
*My husband who to me seems to know just as much as the gyno (my
husband is so special and caring) thought perhaps it was time.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
If yes for how long total? At what age did you start using them?
*yes, i started at the age of 16 and I'm now 34.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
*Pads

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive
diseases? If so, what ones and which relatives?
*my mum and I both had cervix cancer

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?
*I had it done 7th July 1999

8.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
*I'm doing ok so far. No pain can compare to what I had before
the operation. I was so happy I was up and walking the next morning
after surgery. Told the nurse get rid of the morphine and the potty
toilet..didn't need either of them.

9.)What if anything has made them better?
*Naturally rest.

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that
did not treat you with respect in regard to your difficulties?
*Not after the hyst. but regarding Endo ...yes..The first two gynos
tried to tell me my pain wasn't caused by Endo..perhaps a bowel
problem. I told them I knew it wasn't a bowel problem and that
it wasn't in my head either.

11.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy?
If so what?
*No

12.)How are you feeling currently? (I truly care!)
*I'm feeling ok. We have no children and in one way I feel a
whole part of me is missing and in another way I feel so happy.
I think the long battle with Endo I just want to come to a end.
Yes perhaps I let it beat me by taking this way out but I had
to do something as I could not stand seeing those who love me..
hurt just as much as I was. Thank you for caring.

13.)Anything else you need or want to share??

14.)Do you have a Web Site/Home Page? If so, leave me the url

Contributor's Website

*We are still working on it..but please drop by and say hello..I
haven't updated my story for sometime as you will see...guess
I was running away, but I couldn't hide.
