1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?
**I had a 16 pound ovarian tumor, what was called 'borderline' meaning benign with atypia.
2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery and what the
long term effects might be on your health by your doctor?
**Absolutely not! I was given the 'Happy Not to Have Periods Anymore' booklet by a nurse.
Nothing was explained to me or any of my questions/concerns answered.
3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?
**My friend who had one 3 years before me.
4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?
**Probably 5 years total, off&on. Started using them when I was 23.
5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?
**Both, and occasionally the 'cup'.
6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?
**A sister who had a hysterectomy for precancerous changes to her cervix and a cousin
who had a hysterectomy due to endo.
7.) Are you a DES daughter?
**Yes.
8.)How long has it been since your surgery?
**6 months.
9.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?
**Yes, with lymph nodes and layer of fat over intestines.
10.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?
**Severe depression, OCD, numbness in legs, arms & hands, restless leg syndrome,
no feeling at all in my vagina, gingivitis, chronic sinus infections, memory loss,
visual disturbances (increased floaters, flashes of light,etc..) return of migraines
w/vomiting, my back & hips are deformed because of the tumor,
have contemplated suicide more than twice.
11.)What if anything has made them better?
**Nothing. I am seeing a psychologist, my new Dr is trying to set me up with physical
therapy to re adjust the structural deformities of hips/back.
12.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat
you
with respect in regard to your difficulties?
**Nobody treated me with respect. I made sure that my wishes were clear. I only wanted
the affected ovary & tumor removed and to leave everything else be if it was not
cancerous. I awoke in recovery to be told by someone that it was borderline & the next
day was rudely awakened by someone who was telling everyone in the hall outside my room
'This is the woman who has a 30 pound tumor removed!' This someone later turned out
to be an 'assistant' surgeon I had not been told about who probably yanked everything
out of me. He was so nice, telling me not to be overly optimistic because they were
waiting for the results from my lymph node biopsy (like something not cancerous would
spread into your lymph nodes?), that I could take HRT (so I could get breast cancer?).
Thank God I got out of there in 3 days. Then I never got a return appointment,
and my phone calls went unreturned. I am now seeking a malpractice attorney.
13.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy? If so what?
**No.
14.)How are you feeling currently?
**Miserable, angry, depressed. I feel like I was raped.
15.)Anything else you need or want to share?
**I think that there should be a law that gives a woman the final say in what gets
yanked. The tumor I had was huge & I expected to loose the ovary it had grown on,
I could live with that. But to be gutted & castrated & left so shattered physically &
mentally & emotionally is inexcusable. To be told that I just lost some tissue is like
telling someone who lost a leg they just lost some toenails. I enjoyed being a woman,
I enjoyed having a period, having children, having sex. Nothing will ever replace what
I lost, and I will never be able to be me again.
