For Hysterectomy

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?(endo, fibroids, etc.)

**Stage IV endo; ovarian cysts

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery
and what the long term effects might be on your health by your doctor?

**No.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?

**Internet.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?

**Yes. from age 23-30

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?

**Both

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?

**One aunt had endometrial cancer that was caught early.

7.) Are you a DES daughter?

**No.

8.)How long has it been since your surgery?

**3 months

9.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?

**Yes

10.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?

**Hot flashes, exhaustion, depression, my eyelashes are falling out, I had
to have an iron infusion because my ferritin level dropped to 7 AFTER the
hysterectomy. My body is not producing the iron it needs now.

11.)What if anything has made them better?

**Nothing - I just started Effexor 75 mg. yesterday tho.

12.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties?

Yes. I have five pages' worth. The difficulties ranged from not knowing
who I was when I called, never receiving any test results (I was told it was
cancer), surgery being rescheduled at the 11th hour, ongoing low-grade fevers,
discharged without any instructions ...

13.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy?

**No.

14.)How are you feeling currently?

**Suicidal. There is no end to this nightmare in sight. I was discharged
from the surgeon's care yesterday, incredibly. She never even looked
at my list of concerns as she was running late for surgery. I was
not a challenge to her practice since I did NOT have cancer.

15.)Anything else you need or want to share?

**I want to thank you for this web site.

1.) What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer, etc.)

*Endo; 2 lap surgeries had only helped for a while.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after
surgery and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?

*More or less...one ovary left at the time to delay menopause

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?

*Lots of personal research, on-line mainly

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?

*yes

If yes for how long total?

*1 or 2 years...tried them twice. On and off in my twenties

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?

*both, only pads

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?

*no-both sisters have children, I have never been pregnant

7.)How long has it been since your surgery?

*April 2001

8.)What problems are you experiencing?

*Severe and constant pelvic pain for two years since ovary removal,
possible nerve damage and scarring

9.)What if anything has made them better?

*Nothing, really; Would have to take heavy pain
pills, and then unable to function

10.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties?

*Several; have seen 12 doctors in 18 months; only three even seem to
believe I have pain; several have told me I would just have to live
with it. My entire life has changed; I no longer write, as can't sit
at computer; no longer travel with my husband on vacations, cannot
have sex without pain; have missed so much work facing termination.

11.)Anything else you need or want to share??

*due for a lap. for adhesions and scarring removal at a special Endo
clinic later this month-hate to count too much on it, as pain has been so
severe for so long. But I am secretly counting on relief, even if temporary.

For Hysterectomy 1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?(endo, fibroids, etc.)

**Pelvic Inflammatory Disease caused by actinomycosis, an anaerobic bacteria.
I had an IUD at the time but when I first started experiencing problems and
suspected a pelvic infection I was told I did not have one and if I did it would
show up on the blood test. Unfortunately that is only true for aerobic bacterial
infections! It took 10 months of getting sicker and sicker before I started running
a temperature of 104F and I eventually was correctly diagnosed.
By then surgery and a month of IV antibiotics was necessary to save my life.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery and what
the long term effects might be on your health by your doctor?

**By the time I found a doctor who identified my problem I was in critical
condition and my surgery was done on emergency basis so long term effects were not discussed.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?

**I did not have any information prior to the surgery.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?

**I only used pills for a short time. I couldn't
tolerate them and that is why I had an IUD.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?

**Mostly tampons. 6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?

**No

7.) Are you a DES daughter?

**No

8.)How long has it been since your surgery?

**16 years

9.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?

**Both uterus and ovaries.

10.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?

**Within the first few months after the surgery I gained 40 pounds. I haven't
gained further but have not been able to lose any weight either. I experienced
a great loss of sexual sensation and an intolerance for either very cold or hot
weather. I also now have osteoporosis which I
attribute to the incomplete replacement hormones.

11.)What if anything has made them better?

**Nothing has helped. Hormones helped a little with my intolerance for temperature
changes but after I turned 55 my doctor refused to renew my prescription.

12.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did
not treat you with respect in regard to your difficulties?

**I was sick for 10 months before I became critically ill and in that time I saw
a number of doctors, all of whom told me it was all in my head. The VERY WORST
was a urologist my GP referred me to just 1 week before I had my surgery.
I told him I had a fever of 104F and he did even not take my temperature.
During the examination when I pretty much hit the ceiling because I was in so
much pain he said I was just overly sensitive and there was NOTHING wrong
with me!!! I only regret paying the bill as I left his office in tears.

13.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy?

**No. 14.)How are you feeling currently?

**I am happy to be alive but I am truly saddened by the negative effects the
surgery has had on my life and my relationship with my husband. It would never
have been necessary if I had been able to get the correct diagnosis in the beginning.

15.)Anything else you need or want to share??

**If you know you are sick and doctors tell you there is nothing wrong do persist
in trying to find an answer. With the internet it is much easier to do research
yourself these days. When you are sick and just trying to hold your life
together it is SO hard to be trying to convince doctors to take you seriously.
After two or three doctors have concluded there is nothing wrong the next
doctors write you off as a hypochondriac. Only you are your best advocate. Having
a relative or friend to help is great if you have one who is willing.

My husband of 18 yrs was no help at all. Sex makes everything so complicated.
I was in such pain and he took it as a rejection. We are still together but it
took a long time after the surgery before our relationship recovered.

a cure. It can come back afterwards, even with removing everything.
I was told that, but I'm not sure I believed it till now. Weigh the pros and
cons carefully before making a decision.

adhesions, my OB/GYN got "tired" of my chronic pain and implied that it was
"in my head" and sent me to a psychiatrist. That same (OB/GYN) staff was always
rude when I would call in because of my pain.

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?

**I was told I had Endometriosis, my doctor told me to try to have 1 more child and
that I had 1 month to get pregnant. I did get pregnant within 2 weeks
(I followed doctors orders). After I had my son the Endometriosis came back,
and it came back worse than ever.

I had a Laser surgery but was told I had a bad case of it. In the mean time,
my GYN retired and I had to find a new one. Well I went to him, told him what
I had been told, within a matter of 20 min. he had me scheduled for a
Complete Hysterectomy .
He took my word for it and at the time all I knew was I
was in some serious pain and I wanted it to end.

All I received about the surgery was the instructions on the hospital. I had
the complete Hysterectomy and I didn't see a Doctor for 3 days after my surgery,
he used stitches I was allergic to and I had severe pain after my surgery.
Finally on my 3rd day one of the other doctors from his
practice came to discharge me. I still was in alot of pain.

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery
and what the long term effects might be by your doctor?

**All I was told about my Post surgery is I would feel 100 % diffrent, well,
that wasn't a lie, my whole life changed, for the worse....My husband and
I fight constantly, I have gained alot of weight, and am very depressed and
most of all I don't want anything to do with sex, it is ruining my marriage.
I am so unhappy and I wish a million times i just kept living with the pain,
I think I could have lived with that pain better than I can live with this pain.

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?

**The only info I had is what my mom told me after she had hers in 1991.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?

**Sure I used birth control I was told it would make my endometriosis shrink,
which I found out later it just fertilized it.
As you can see I have alot of anger even after 4 yrs.

**I used both tampons and pads

11.)Anything else you need or want to share??

**I just want the life I once had back again... my marriage and my

If you'd like to leave your email address for other women
to be able to contact you, please add it here:

1.) What was the reason for your hysterectomy? (endo, fibroids, cancer, etc.)

**endo.

who explained everything in great detail.

with respect in regard to your difficulties?

**not a doctor per se, but a few pharmacists. i actually had one in New Mexico
where i lived for a year that had something nasty to say every time i had to pick
up my estrogen. she didn't like that my doctor cured my painful
existence by performing this hysterectomy when i was so young.

11.)Anything else you need or want to share?

**i don't know if it was because i was so young when i had my hysterectomy or because
i was in such pain and discomfort before surgery that i was able to recover much quicker
than anyone else i have heard of. i insisted on being let go from the hospital a day
early, i mowed the lawn with a push mower 5 days after being released from the
hospital and i returned to school 4 days after my surgery. yes, i could have done
some major damage with the incision, but i just felt so much better. i don't understand
how people can be bed ridden for weeks afterwards. and fyi, i had a complete
hysterectomy, ovaries, tubes, and cervix. having a hysterectomy was the best
decision i ever made. i don't care how many people discourage it, i am glad my
doctor finally agreed to do it. no i will never have children, but 8 years later
and i have absolutely NO regrets!

12/12/05

1.)What was the reason for your hysterectomy?(endo, fibroids, etc.)

**I had the hysterectomy at age 36. No children. Married for ten years. My name is
Nita Conner. I suffered severe pain during and before my periods for several years. After
seeing at least 4 GYNs, I was told in 2004 that I needed a DNC. Following the DNC, I
went "cluelessly" to my doctor's office to review the results of my lab work. My doctor did
not even look me in the eye when he said--never "heard" of this before--- but the
cysts removed were cancerous, stage 1. Before I could respond to this news, he said he had
scheduled a radical hysterectomy for me within thirty days. (After procedure(s), polyps,
cysts and fibroid tumors were also discovered.)

2.)Do you feel like you were informed about what to expect after surgery
and what the long term effects might be on your health by your doctor?

**ABSOLUTELY NOT.

After surgery, developed blood infection and was in hospital for 7 days, also had severe
reaction to morphine, no bowel movements for 3 weeks--can you imagine

Have had multiple complications--for three months following surgery had UTIs and nausea.
Been depressed for over a year, which of course, includes trying out every major
anti-depressant on the market (have been on 7 meds). Quit my job of 6 yrs--which I once
loved--working on contract now (which means I have successfully isolated myself).
So much more than I expected. AND I AM STILL IN PAIN

3.)If not your doctor, where did you get your information on hysterectomy?

**I researched on the internet and read books before the surgery. Talked with relatives who
had surgery. I had a long list of questions for my doctors but I still don't understand
what happened and why everything happened as it did. I feel like I have been
in a dream state throughout the past 13 months.

4.)Did you use birth control pills in your lifetime?

**For about 2 years. (26-28) Stopped taking to have children. Could not have
children due to infertility result of endometriosis and fibroid tumors.

5.)Did you use tampons or pads during menstruation?

**Tampons. Last two years had to use both due to heavy periods.

6.)Do you have female blood relatives with reproductive diseases?

**Aunt-endometriosis, hysterectomy, 36 y.o. Sister-endometriosis

7.) Are you a DES daughter?

**no

8.)How long has it been since your surgery?

**13 and a half months

9.)Did you have uterus, and both ovaries removed?

**1 ovary, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix removed (abdominal)

10.)What problems, if any, are you experiencing?

**UTI, Depression (previous suicidal thoughts) Insomnia, Severe Irritability, Rage
Severe Abdominal pain, Headaches/Migraines, Hotflashes Mood swings, Gained about 50# in year

11.)What if anything has made them better?

**Demerol, laughing when I can

12.)Have you ever encountered a doctor or nurse that did not treat you
with respect in regard to your difficulties?

**For the past year, I would estimate I have had over 30 doctor's appointments. This month
alone, I have 7 appointments with doctors. Only one doctor treated me with respect and
understanding. I remember so many horrible encounters with the medical professionals. The
initial discovery. I was not prepared for the news of having cancer. I went to the appointment
alone, and after being informed of having cancer--waited, crying, outside the office
for my husband to come pick me up. I have never felt so alone in my entire life.

Following the surgery, (doctors were not positive if I would have everything removed or
not--had to "wait and see"), my doctor did not see me for two days and every time I asked
"just exactly what's left", no one could/would tell me. And perhaps, the worst experience
I had in the hospital was when an intern was working with my medical team. He came in and
asked if I needed anything. I asked for pain medication. He told me that I could
have another Advil. Advil----half a dozen people were playing twister in my nether region
two days ago and this young guy wants me to have an Advil.

13.)Are you currently using any form of hormone replacement therapy? If so what?

**I was prescribed Premarin but this was discontinued in January. Hot flashes continued and
doctor said it I was not responding well to med.

14.)How are you feeling currently?

**Awful.
Sad.
Empty.
Alone.
