online Advice and Diagnostic

Dr. Jelovsek was kind enough to answer a few
questions on how Woman's Diagnostic Cyber began
and where he sees in the future of health
information on the internet.

1.) How did Woman's Diagnostic Cyber get started?

Dr. Jelovsek:

*Woman's Diagnostic Cyber started in October,
1997,after about 6 months of preparatory work
getting content and products organized. I have
been interested in computer applications in
Ob-Gyn most of my career and started an Ob-Gyn
SIG (special interest group on CompuServe back
in the early 80's. When the world wide web finally
got going with browsers that could display computer
independent HTML pages, I realized the time had
finally come to have a new form of health care
delivery. Well over 50% of all health care office
visits are mainly for information and not exams,
tests or medicines. This new media, the internet,
made it possible to have a major change in how
medical care is delivered and especially to let
patients direct much of their own health care, to
make sure they get the latest and best treatment
because no physicians can keep up with all the
new medical knowledge in all fields.

I chose to use my past experience in medicine and
computers to design and implement the web site
myself. I wanted to focus on symptoms and diagnosing
what might be wrong rather than focusing on specific
diseases and their treatments. I feel a physician's
expertise is most needed in the "front end" of a
problem. Once a condition or disease is diagnosed,
many treatments are fairly standard and there are
multiple information resources available to determine
the best treatment.

2.)Where do you find the time that you devote to
helping answer women's health questions ?

Dr. Jelovsek:

*I have an active practice in Ob-Gyn although it is
much more gynecology than Ob. I am at a medical
school (East Tennessee State University in Johnson
City Tennessee) and teach the students and residents
along with seeing private patients. I am used to
writing medical articles and evaluating medical
scientific literature in that capacity over a 30
year career so that experience helps in producing
an informational web site.

The time I spend on adding and maintaining Woman's
Diagnostic Cyber is after hours and on week ends.
I am fortunate to a have a family that supports me
in this and often helps out. Helping women to be
more informed about their health and medical options
is a passion with me and I enjoy building a medical
resource that I hope people will find useful.

3.) Woman's Diagnostic Cyber is full of great
information and resources, where do you see access
to health information and resources on the World
Wide Web in 10 years?

Dr. Jelovsek:

*The growth rate is about 400% each year and I do
not anticipate that slowing down. In 10 years there
should be about one million times as much information
as there is now on the web. The challenge is to keep
gathering the best and most accurate medical
information in defined areas that are recognized
for their quality.

With increased information access, patients themselves
will be expected to be in charge of their own
preventive care and treatment of day-to-day
physiological variances such as colds, allergies,
high blood pressure, stomach upset, headaches, stress
and mood problems etc. They will manage and monitor
their own chronic diseases and forward those findings
to their doctors who will only intervene when they
recognize an abnormal set of data. The pharmacy with
its expanded set of non prescription medicines, herbs,
oils, nutritional supplements and even health classes
will be much more at the center of a patient's health
care experience than the physician will be. Doctors
won't go out of business however, because more and
more harmful, but earlier disease conditions will be
recognized by the patients, by their informed
relatives and by the pharmacists and professionals
helping them.

I believe we are entering a major new era of health
care that will enable us to live longer and enjoy
those years more because of being healthier.
