On a beautiful Saturday in Tryon, North Carolina, a surpirsed "Doc" Gillis was called to the stage just prior to the awards ceremony. John Stevens and I had the distinct priviledge and honor to present "Doc" the "Barbecue Achievement Medal" and his designation as a KCBS Master Certified Barbecue Judge. This was a cherished moment for both John and I, as "Doc" was a close personal friend, a man much loved by all and respected as an icon in the barbecue family.
