The History of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog states that it is a large, powerful livestock guardian whose origins date back for thousands of years. This ancient turkish breed is highly prized by the human Turkish shepherds for their loyalty, hardiness, courage, independence, and a nobility that cannot be matched by any other breed of dog. From the beginning, the goal of Alaturka Anatolians is and always has been the preservation and continuance of the Anatolian “in the Turkish manner”, emphasizing these same qualities.
The Anatolian Shepherd Dogs of Alaturka Kennel are highly socialized, devoted to their families, and gentle with children. Alaturka Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are carefully bred to be adaptable to any situation, including the capability to easily function as the serious flock guardians seen in ancient and modern-day Turkey, or as gentle protectors of family and friends. We strive to match each puppy with the home it is meant for by temperament testing each pup for the temperament needed, whether it be for livestock guardian, family companion and/or protector, service dog, best friend, or any combination of these traits.
Since 1987, when the Alaturka Kennel was established, each generation has produced some very special dogs that represent how the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has been for thousands of years, with stable temperaments, calm demeanors, and the ability to discern a perceived threat from a real threat. All breeding dogs in the Alaturka Kennel must be cleared of all genetic defects tested for in the breed (hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and entropion) before they are considered for our breeding program. They must also have the correct temperament, structure and calmness that is so important to the Anatolian's inherent instincts.
Living with an Anatolian Shepherd Dog entails more responsibility and committment than most any other breed of dog, but they can be a wonderful and intelligent companion, guardian and friend. As a person who has lived with Anatolians since 1987, I can tell you that it has been a very educational journey for me. My first ASD taught me humilty and gave me a very refined sense of humor. My next several ASDs proved to me beyond any doubt that I never wanted to be without at least two of these really unique dogs. They are funny with a serious nature. They are calm, with spurts of hilarious energy. They are regal, with comic bouts of silliness, but never over the top. I love their gentleness when they find abandoned kittens and lay for hours while these babies use them as a jungle gym. I love the way they look at a situation, figure it out, and then handle it in the most efficient way. I love the way people will actually stop what they are doing when I drive by with 2 or 3 Anatolians in my van just to stare in awe at the absolute nobility of these dogs. I love the way my dogs always seem to know when my spirits are down and how they are perfectly content to just lend me quiet support. And, most of all, I love the exquisite look of ecstasy that comes over my big male's face when a child runs to him and throws its arms around his neck to hug him.
These are the most addictive dogs I have ever had and, during my lifetime, I have lived with many different breeds of dogs .... none of which have ever made me feel so safe or so loved.
