Parakeets

These birds were first brought to England in 1840. because
of their hardiness, curiosity and cheerful chatter, they became
popular, and importation from Australia was abundant. They
average 8 1/2 inches long. Parakeets adapt to almost any living
situation. A pet parakeet will average a life span of 8 to 15 years.
American and english parakeets come in almost every color of
the rainbow.

DETERMINING THE SEX-The sex of an adult parakeet can usally be
told by the color of the cere, the patch of skin just above the
beak. In males is a deep blue and females it is whitish tan,
pink, light blue or brown. The feathers of both are equally
brilliant.

BEST LOCATION-parakeets should have a light, well-ventilated
location and if possible, should get their share of sunlight.
This of course does not mean that the cage should be unprotected
and drafty or should even be placed in the full glare of the sun.
In any case, the bird must be protected against draft. In a light,
sunny location, the bird should also be able to move to a shaded
place.

The cage must be cleaned at regular intervals. Each cage should
be fitted with at least three perches. Don't have them all of
the same diameter. Different sized round help to rest and excerise
the feet. One should be placed so the bird can stand on it within
comfortable reach of his food and drink cups.

PROPER DIET-They will eat a good parakeet blend with 40-percent
canary seed and a small ration of oat groats mixed in. Adding
fruits and vegetables will add a more proper balance of vitamins
and minerals for the long life of your bird. You must always
have a piece of cuttlebone attached to the cage. Replace it
when it is chewed down. Some of a parakeet's favorite are
clover, alfalfa, dandelions, plantain, chickweed, beet tops,
celery tops, radish tops, carrot tops, apple peel, graded carrot,
celery stalk, kale, corn on the cob. Greens give your parakeet
his bright eyes and sleek appearance.
