Mitochondrial haplogroup V, a sister clade of the most common European haplogroup H, appeared about 12,000 years ago in southwestern Europe. Today haplogroup V is geographically restricted to western, central and northern European countries, and is found in about 4-5% of the overall European population. It is virtually absent in the Balkans, Turkey, the Caucasus region, and the Near East.

The highest population frequencies of haplogroup V are found among the Skolt Saami of northern Scandinavia; 52% of the population carries this variation. Other regional frequencies include populations of northwestern Spain and the Basque region, comprising about 10% of the populations in these areas. Indeed geographic and temporal analyses of haplogroup V was the first clear evidence that the Iberian (Spain and Portugal) refuge area had a major impact on repopulating the European continent after the last Ice Age, about 13,000 years ago.
