Notes for DAVID MYRE KEEN:

David Myre Keen was born April 8, 1834, son of James M. Keen and Apsilla McCullough Keen, and grandson of David Keene of Tattnall County, Georgia. He married Nancy Walker, born February 5, 1832, Ware Co., Georgia, a daughter of Littleberry and Nancy Dowling Walker. They had seven children: Mary Elizabeth, Nancy P., Jerimiah Jackson, James Wesley, Joseph Carleton, John Hambleton Johns and Ida Keene.

According to Judge Folks Huxford's files, in a copy of a page of his hand written notes, obtained from the Huxford Genealogical Library in Homerville, Georgia, David and Nancy Keene were living in Columbia Co., Florida, in 1850, and in 1860 they had moved to Charlton County, Georgia. This is proved in the 1850 Columbia County, Florida census and the 1860 Charlton County, Georgia census.

David and Nancy Keene were married only about nine years, when the threat of the Civil War was upon them and would change their lives and the lives of their children forever. David enlisted as Private, July 29, 1861, in Company G, 26th Regiment Georgia Volunteer infantry Army Northern Virginia, C. S. A. It was a ruthless, bloody war lead by General Sherman and his Yankee troops, destroying, killing and burning their path through the beautiful South that they had known. His fifth child, Joseph Carlton Keen was born Jan. 8, 1862. On June 11, 1862, David was admitted to C.S. A. General Hospital at Charlottesville, Va., on account of debility. He returned to duty on June 30, 1862. He was killed at Manassas, Va., Aug. 28, 1862. This information is in the "Rooster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia", 1861-1865.

The last two children, John Hambleton Johns Keen, born 1869, and Ida Keen, born 1872, had to have had a different father, as they were born several years after David was killed in the Civil War. Her second husband was a Johns and her third husband was an Altman, but the children kept the "Keen" name.

James Wesley Keen was born before the Civil War on Nov. 3, 1859, in Charlton

Co., GA, son of David Myre and Nancy Walker Keen. (Keen was spelled "Keene" in the family Bible of David Myre and Nancy Walker Keen and in the census it was spelled Keen). His father was killed in the Civil War in 1862, and as soon as he could, he went to work on the railroad for 23 cents a day, to help his mother raise his brother and sister. James Wesley Keen married Charity Mary Jane Tanner, born Jan. 1, 1856, daughter of John "Josh" Tanner and Eliza Bradley Tanner. He made his living as a farmer and a timberman.

The following information was told, years ago, by Steve and Hattie Keen Johnson, when they were still living, that his first log home was located behind Farres, Jimmy and Edsel Higginbotham's homes on Ratliff Road in Nassau Co., Florida, and he owned a commissary that was near his home. He also, owned the first sawmill in the Keen settlement, until his son, James Mitchell Keen bought him out years later. Eventually, about the turn of the century, he built a large two story home on Ratliff Road, located directly across from the second railroad crossing as you drive from US 1 and go down Ratliff Road. The home is still standing, but looks quite different today, as the large upstairs and downstairs front porches that went all the way across the front of the home, were removed when it was remodeled around 1994. He also had a commissary nearby.

James W. Keen was elected County Commissioner for Nassau Co., in 1916 and

served for 16 years. He owned around 3,000 acres of land in the Keen settlement and paid 25 cents an acre for it. He also bought 1,000 acres of land around the Ratliff section and paid $10,000.00 for this land. James Wesley Keen Mapped out the way for the Georgia Southern Railroad to be placed through the land in the Keen settlement.

Yes I have tried the LDS web site. Isn't it great! That's how I found

you!!! I am amazed with all the info that I have gotten in the past few

months. I get lost in the names and dates. I cant wait until my genealogy

program gets here! I have coresponded with many people through email and I

tried to organize my email into different folders. But, I should have never

tried to organize because now I am really unorganized. I do know that I

want to get my hands on "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" because so many

people have referred to that book. Carroll's are also in it. Have you

researched POWG?

My Grandmother, Myrtle Music told me that my G-grandmother Ella "Ellie" Lee

Carroll was pure Indian and that she was as mean as could be. My

Grandmother also said when she first saw my Grandfather, he was just out of

WWII, in uniform, muscular, and a dark, handsom Indian. My Grampa Roy Davis

was dark as is my father Johnny Davis. When my dad came to Hawaii last

summer, he put on a big woven hat and looked like a real local. My cousin

from the Davis side has also heard that we have indian, possibly Cherokee.

He said that he thought that Nancy Elizabeth Walker was pure Indian. If she

was pure, then her daughter Ella must have been only half. But why is it

that my dad is so dark if he only has 1/8 Indian. Maybe David M. Keen had

some Indian as well. Or maybe my G-grandpa, James Davis had some. I don't

think it is just a rumour anymore though, not with so many people from

different immediate families thinking the same thing. There were two

Walker's in a Nassau Co. census listed as servants and under race there was

a "C". I wondered if that stood for Colored or Cherokee. I have heard that

Indians were used as servants and if they were black, wouldn't it have

listed them as "B" or as slaves instead of servants? The Walker's I saw

were close in age to Nancy, so they could have been related. I have also

heard that people who had indian didn't report it for fear of segragation.

My cousin "Aaron Davis" who is my Dad's first cousin, tried for years to get

genealogy info from my Grandfather's older siblings. But they didn't want

to give any info and my cousin said it was as if they were hiding something.

Maybe cousins who married or maybe they were ashamed to have Indian, who

knows. There has always been Davis family reunions every year on labor Day

and it always takes place around Dixie and Manatee Counties. It is usually

a three day affair and the first day is reffered to as the Chicken Pearlo.

I think Chicken Pearlo evolved from Chicken Ferlo as when all the chickens

"Davis's" are let loose!!! The Chicken Pearlo is always the day before the

family reunion. It's a day where everyone who is in town for the reunion

gets together, eats, and talks about the old days. It is kind of like a

mini reunion. I remember one reunion as a child where there were 2 to 3

skillets on open fires frying different kinds of fish and hush puppies.

There were at least 4 long tables lined up with casserols, cakes, home

jarred vegetables, and all kinds of goodies. Just thinking about it makes

me homesick. My family here is through my step dad and my childrens father

but nothing beats the feelings I get when I hear those southern accents from

home. My Grampa Roy Davis lived in Parrish, Manatee Co., and I remember

that he hunted for gophers and then sold them live for meat. If that aint

southern, I don't know what is. My mother's family is from Alabama and they

didn't eat gopher! No, they ate alligator's! I used to go hunting with my

dad and my grampa for deer, rabbit, and squirls near the Suwanee River.

That's enough, I just got on a trail of thoughts, home sick I guess. It's

been 13 years since I last went to Florida and I hope to try and come next

summer in time for a Davis reunion. Maybe even a Keen reunion!

"Granny Johnson", as I remember her, was hardworking and expected all around her to do likewise. She was loving, as far as I was concerned, always quick to offer condolence when a growing youngster needed such. She had to have the yards swept clean regularly, not raked, but swept with a "brush broom", a batch of

gallberry bush , or something similar tied together as a broom. No grass was allowed to grow in the yard.

She cooked very much, beans, black eyed peas, rice and gravy, greens and such, as well as plenty of biscuits. We always had home made cane syrup on hand, plenty of home made butter, cured pork from the smoke house and yard chickens.

We ate well. All of this was cooked on a wood burning stove. I happened to be in charge of getting wood for the stove, this Was a monumental task, as a fire burned in the stove all day long during the winter time, and most of the time otherwise.

In those days, we hitched the horse to the wagon and would drive into the woods to find a tree that was lightning struck, it could not be too dead or Granny would not use it. We would saw it down and load it on the wagon and bring it home in lengths. Then we would saw it into stove lengths, split and stack to use. We also had to get wood for the fireplace in order to keep warm in the winter. Granny wanted plenty of wood, always. Many times she would come out to the wood pile and stay with us as we sawed the wood with a cross-cut saw. Grandaddy kept the saw and the axe sharp.

I can remember clothes washing day at home. In the early days, she would boil clothes in the boiler (that took wood also) and then scrub them on a washboard to finish cleaning them. Then she had to have two tubs of rinse water and wring them out by hand -- this was hard work. Then she got a washing machine with an eccentric gas motor. I have seen her kick on the start kick to crank until she was out of breath, but she usually got it started. This made her life a little easier on wash day.

Then we had to grow monster gardens so she would have plenty to eat, as well as to can. I remember her so well, shelling peas, butter beans, shucking corn, making pickles, doing all the things to have food aplenty for the times when we were not growing anything. We tried to have something growing most of the time.

Granny made sure of this.

We had to come home on the school bus in the evening, and Granny always had something baked that we could have a snack as soon as we got in the house, changed out of school clothes (you did not wear school clothes except to school), and before you started chores. She cooked ginger bread cakes a lot, these were about one half inch thick and five inches across, also sugar cakes, bread pudding, cake and pie. This made you want to hurry and get home. We also had milk cows so there was plenty of milk to drink with all this food.

Granny was a strict disciplinarian, as well, she would cut a switch, no belt or razor strap, out of a bush, and you knew you were in trouble. She would switch you good, then make you come and hug her and she would hug you telling you all the time it was for your own good, she wouldn't do that if she did not love you.

I could write, no telling how much, but this is some of the things that made quite an impact on me as I grew up. I loved my Granny, and I knew she truly loved me as well.

Notes for STEPHEN LEE JOHNSON:

Stephen Lee Johnson was the son of Henry C. "Doc" and Jane Elizabeth Mason

Johnson. He was born in Nassau County and his family moved to Duval County when he was a baby. He grew up on a farm on Old Kings Road, North, near the Duval and Nassau County line. He was only six when his mother, a native of Edinburgh Scotland, died and 18 when his father died.

Steve, as he was called, saw Hattie Keen for the first time at a distance when he was working as a telegraph operator in Dinsmore. When he heard that one of her

brothers-in-law was giving a square dance, he went. At first they traveled around to various locations in Georgia where he was sent to operate the telegraph equipment, but he said he finally quit because of lack of decent housing accommodations for himself and his wife. He built a house on Ratliff Road in Nassau County near where Edsel and Jimmy Higginbotham's homes are now.

Two of her brothers ran sawmills, and he drove a team for one of them, four

yoke of oxen, and handled logs for him. He did a lot of wheel wright work, fixing the timber carts when they broke down. During the "great depression", he built moonshine stills for people, to make home brewed whiskey, as this was one of the few ways left for most people to make a living during that time.

He became interested in carpentry and construction when he worked for "Newt"

Conner at his store in Callahan, when Conner wanted to do a lot of remodeling. He then started building and remodeling homes on his own until his gradual retirement. He built a home for his wife on old Kings Road in Dinsmore. Later, he built another one about 100 yards down the road because she didn't like the first one.

As a retired non contract home builder, he could not sit back and do nothing,

and there wasn't enough income coming in, so in his workshop, he added to the family income by means of at-home carpentry, his wooden rocking chairs of massive proportions with soft cowhide stretched across the seats. After he

sold his first chair, word of mouth served as his advertisement and the chairs sold as fast as he could make them.

Steve died with leukemia when he was 86 years old, and he and his wife Hattie

had been married for 66 years.
