Zachariah Haddock was born in 1751in Pitt Co., NC, the son of John Haddock and

Liscom Taylor. By the 1790 census, Zachariah was no longer living in North Carolina. Records show he was a private in Captain John F. Randolph's Company of Camden Co., GA, stationed at Colerain, in the Georgia Militia 1793- 1796. Zachariah Haddock owned two hundred acres of land in Camden Co., GA, in 1792 and sold the land to Isaac Lang in 1806, his wife Amey waived dower to the land. In 1803, Zachariah Haddock was granted a two hundred acre Spanish Land Grant on the St. Marys River by Govenor White. In the 1803 census of East Florida Territory, Zachariah Haddock was listed as a Protestant, a farmer and sailor and owned three cows and a horse. In 1798, Jose Youngblood acquired a 600 acre Spanish Land Grant on the St. Marys River and lived there and cultivated the

land until sometime after the exchange of flags in 1821 when he sold the land to Zachariah Haddock. Jacob Worley was in treaty with Youngblood for the land but declined any further interest, at which time Zachariah Haddock paid Youngblood

for it. The heirs of Zachariah Haddock claimed the 600 acres of Cabbage Swamp , but was put up for bid in St. Augustine in 1826 and was sold to the highest bidder, Edwin R. Albertie. Zachariah Haddock was married to Amey (last name Unknown).

They were the parents of four known children: Zachariah Haddock who married Sarah Griffith in Camden Co.; GA on 22 May 1819, Jospeh Haddock; William Haddock; and Ezekiel Haddock.

More About ELIZABETH WINNIFRED HADDOCK:

Burial: Edgewater Cem., New Smyrna Beach, Fl

Notes for JAMES ALDRIDGE BRADDOCK:

James Aldridge Braddock was a son of William Braddock and Charlotte Christopher Braddock of Nassau Co., Florida. James Aldridge Braddock and his

sons, cattlemen and pioneers, traveled slowly southward in search of better grazing. They found it in the Crescent City area. When they had their ideal spot, they moved the family down from Nassauville, near Fernandina, Florida, by wagon. Everyone but the very young or sick, walking. (When I drove down,

it was 100 miles and took two hours. I wonder how long it took them?)

In this rangeland in the 1860's, James A. and sons owned huge herds of cattle, horses and hogs, all roving in this unfenced wild country. Another pioneer family, the Turners, were neighbors and there were many disputes over range rights and animals. This soon developed into a gun fight over some hogs in possession of the Turners, owned by the Braddocks. In the battle, Bill and Dave Turner were killed, as was John Braddock, the oldest sixty years. John's widow, Ozilla, later married James Padgett and John's 36 caliber five shot Colt pistol, is in possession of her descendants, James Padgett of Crescent City, Florida. This

story is as told by H. N. Braddock, now deceased, a descendant of James Aldridge Braddock.

Submitted by: Helen B. Hodges, Callahan, Fl, cousin to James Aldridge Braddock family.

James Aldridge served two enlistments in the Indian War in 1837. The first was Capt. Lewis Bailey's company of Florida Militia, Feb. 14 to June 18, 1837. The second was in Capt. William Haddock's company, June 19 to Dec. 18, 1837.

16. WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER5 BRADDOCK (ELIZABETH WINNIFRED4 HADDOCK, JOSEPH3, ZACHARIAH2, JOHN1) was born 1844 in FL, and died 1925 in Lakeland, FL. He married MALVINA VICTORINE BRIGHT.

Notes for WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER BRADDOCK:

The interviews for the family histories for William Christopher Braddock and his descendants can be found on the internet at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~flindian/books.htm

The following is an abstract of an interview on August 5, 1987, with Elmer Smith, a grandson of W. C. Braddock, Sr. and the son of Ada Braddock.

William Christopher Braddock, Sr. served in the Civil War. My grandparents, William Christopher Bradock and his wife Victorine, left Sebastian in 1911 and moved to Lakeland, where they are buried. My grandparents had sixteen children but they lost four. They must have been quite young when they married. Both my grandparents had been born in Florida, not many of us can make that claim.

I don't know if any of my grandparent's children were born in Sebastian, but the family moved from Seville, Florida to Sebastian before the railroad was here. They loaded the children, all their belongings, and the horse and wagon on a barge and came down the Indian River. I think they might have unloaded the barge somewhere in the Sebastian River and walked to Sebastian.

I don't know why they decided to move to Sebastian, but I know there was a lot of feuding in and around Seville. My grandfather had owned lots of land in Volusia County. He had a farm, cattle, and always had a general store. My grandfather once told me that some men had ambushed and killed his brother up there, so my grandpa killed two of them. There was so much feuding going on up there and Grandpa had a lot of cattle. That must have led to the cattle rustling during the free range days. *(See Note at bottom of page for more details.)

My grandfather fought in the Civil War and my grandmother stayed in the swamps of Florida, near Seville. She had two slaves that stayed with her and they loved off the land and the milk from three cows during the time Grandfather was in the war. When he came home from the war he started over, build a hotel in Seville and had a general store. I think they brought two ex-slaves with them when they moved to Sebastian, one named Joe and his wife named Minnie. We kids were taught to call them 'Aunt Minnie' and 'Uncle Joe. My grandmother was always known as 'Miss Vickie'. My grandfather went blind before he died, but I spent a lot of time with him when we lived at Lakeland near him, and he told me lots of stories. I still cherish the times I spent with him and him telling me stories about everything. I remember sitting on the seat of the wagon with my grandfather. He always sat so straight, even on a horse he sat up straight. He seemed to me to sit like a statue. My sister and I are the only grandchildren who spent that much time with him, and my times with him are indelible in my memory.

My mother used to tell about when she and Aunt Alice shared a bed in the house up over the store and they woke up one night and there were three Indians standing at the foot of their bed. She said they were scared to death. She said the Indians kept saying they wanted to see "Mr. Bladdock" to pay "Mr. Bladdock". I guess that was the only way they could say Braddock. Grandpa had the general store for the local trade and I guess the Indians used it as their trading post. Any, my mother said the Indians were quite common back then.

Ada, my mother, helped Grandpa in the store and was post mistress for him, too. The post office must have been in the general store.

I was born in Sebastian. All of us kids were born in Sebastian, except the oldest was born in Tampa. My mother must have been a very young girl when she came to Sebastian. Grandpa died about 1925 or 26. He was two years older than Grandmother and she lived a couple of years after he died. She died in Ft. Pierce where she had been living with Aunt Sarah.

Notes for GEORGE ALDRIDGE BRADDOCK:

The following story was from Patsy Roberts (Mrs. Robert G. Dubose) of Vero Beach, granddaughter of George A. Braddock, with a few notes passed on to her by her mother, Geraldine Braddock Roberts.

The George A. Braddock family moved to John's Island from Titusville in 1904. In 1907 they moved to Sebastian with their four children.

George Braddock had a citrus grove and a dairy. He raised chickens and at one time he raised and shipped mangoes, the tropical fruit grown in south Florida. The Braddock loved music and square dancing. George played the fiddle for dances.

Their first home in Sebastian was a small house on Louisiana Avenue. They lived there until the larger one to the front of the property was build. in 1909.

We learn from, "Directory, Florida Hotels", 1912, with number of rooms or capacity if listed, Sebastian, Braddock House, George A. Braddock, 20. The Braddock house still standing on N. Louisiana Ave. is the same building that was used to rent rooms.

According to Cora Sadler, George had become hard of hearing in his later years. One day in 1949 as he was on his way walking from the post office while crossing the double-tracked railroad he was struck by a train very near his home. Apparently, he had not "looked in both directions". He was 81.

The following paragraphs were found in the book, "Florida's Hibiscus City, Vero Beach":

Here was a new rich county of about 327,040 acres. The inhabitants bubbling with enthusiasm, were eager to make a place of their own in the great State of Florida.

Governor Martin immediately appointed the county officials who were to serve until the next general election:

Commissioner G. A. Braddock

Commissioner J. W. LaBruce

Commissioner Donald Forbes

Commissioner John H. Atkins

Commissioner O. O. Helseth

On Monday, June 29, 1925, following the creation of Indian River county, Florida, by act of the Legislature, the newly-appointed County commissioners held an organizational meeting at which Commissioners G. A. Braddock, J. W. LaBruce, Donald Forbes and O. O. Helseth elected John H. Atkin to the office of Chairman of the Board.

Notes for ROY BRADDOCK:

An interview with Roy Braddock was held at his home at 4420 El Prado Blvd. in Tampa, Florida on February 18, 1987.

Although Roy appeared in good health he admitted to a lack of memory and to failing eyesight.

Even though he spoke fondly of Sebastian, he could tell us for certainty only that he had been born in Sebastian in 1889, and that he is two years older than his brother Maurice.

He said that although he is more than comfortable in his home at Tampa, he has always missed the east coast and "Little Old Sebastian." I'll live it all my life. From my upstairs bedroom I could raise up in my bed and look out the window at the river.

"I believe the old tomato packing house was about 65 by 80 feet, along the railroad. After the house was closed, I was building something and needed the material, and went down and took it off the building.

"My dad didn't lose much money in the bank failure because someone had warned him of bad times coming and he had taken most of his money out."

"Dad always tried to keep us in automobiles. We weren't wealthy, but we always got along well and we were happy."

ii. MAURICE BRADDOCK, b. 1901, Sebastian, Indian River, FL; m. FRANCES NEJEDLY.

Notes for MAURICE BRADDOCK:

This interview with Mervin Maurice Braddock, a son of W. C. Braddock, Jr., was made on February 28, 1987 at his home at 4206 West Carmen Street, Tampa, Florida.

I was born in a house right behind the old wooden school building in Sebastian, in 1901. My family had built a general store, the "Braddock Store" on Main Street. When Frank and George Vickers first came down to Florida from south Georgia they stayed with us, upstairs over the store, until they got settled. They became our very good friends and eventually bought the store from our family.

My grandfather on my dad's side was born and raised near Seville, a small town near Deland, Florida. His name was William Christopher Braddock and my grandmother's name was Victorine. They moved down to Sebastian because of the big freeze that ruined all the crops in the northern part of the state. Several of their thirteen children came here with them. Back then the railroad only came as far south as Titusville, and my dad used to carry the mail in a sailboat from Titusville to the few settlers who lived along the east coast.

There was another store in the area owned by old man Kitching, a mammoth building up near the railroad track. The old fellow stayed drunk all the time - he'd lean against the wall until someone would come along and give him a push to get him going again. The building had been moved at one time but it must have been before I was born because I remember the building being there when I was a little fella.

Later on a bunch of us younger people built a tennis court on the adjoining property, and I tell you, you talk about the State Agency for sand spurs, it was in that old grass! When you tried to serve you could hardly hold the ball in your hand on account of the sand spurs in it!

When my dad, William Christopher Braddock, Jr., became a young man he started dating my mother, Kate Lawson. The Lawsons lived south of Sebastian, south of Bruce Ryall's house on the ridge.

When my dad would go courting my mother there was no road down there and he had to walk the railroad tracks to see her. One time, he told me, he started off to see her and on the little path between the house and the railroad he met a wildcat. He said the wildcat wouldn't move out of his way and he was embarrassed to go back to town and tell them what had happened.

My mother had been born and raised in Quitman, Georgia, and had come to Sebastian at an early age with her folks. Aunt Ila, her sister, married Paul Kroegel and they lived on the river front. Parris and Bamma Lawson, my Mother brother and sister-in-law, lived on the ridge next door to my Lawson grandparents. Both houses were moved and one later burned.

In those days there were many fires. The store burned down when I was a kid. Back then all you could do about the fire was to stand and watch it burn. It wasn't a large building, it was just a one room affair and after the fire we built another one in its place.

My parents started citrus groves when they came as well as some truck farming and then of course the store, which became the gathering place for everyone on Saturday nights. Supplies for the store came first by boat and then later on by rail.

I think my folks were married at Sebastian and they must have set up housekeeping in the house where I was born. The nearest doctor into hose days was Dr. Holmes of Cocoa. People had to depend largely on home remedies and my mother knew a lot of them.

When anyone got sick there was a man named Oscar Gaffney who was a very good nurse and he'd go take care of them. He lived in a little house about where City Park is. He stayed there by himself for years and it wasn't until he was much older that he got married, but I can't think of his wife's name. The house was torn down eventually, it wasn't much of a house.

My dad built the brick house in 1919, the date used to be on the outside north wall. When the house was built it was on a dirt road later named Central Avenue. The house is still there, but now the road is called US #1. The Wise brothers, contractors from Wabasso, built the house largely from materials from the Cocoa area. It was an unusual house for those times because it was made of brick and had a basement.

As I was growing up I worked in my dad's store and went to school. Later I went on to Tennessee to a military school. Six of us graduated from my high school class in Sebastian when Mr. Edwards was the principal. My Uncle George Braddock was on the school board, he was the one who worked the most in the groves. I remember when the schoolhouse was added on to, but I can't remember what date it was.

When I came back from military school there wasn't too much to do around Sebastian so I went to work for Graves Brothers in the Wabasso office. They had bought their property from Barnett of the Barnett Bank and they started to develop the citrus there. Then George Barker of Florida Citrus Exchange recommended me when an opening came, so I went on the road selling for them.

In early days one of our neighbors was George Hall. His packing house was on the north side of Main Street. He and his wife Meta had a daughter named Julia. They had a grove way out back of Sebastian, not too large but good fruit. When they shipped fruit they used birch bark wrapping rounds, instead of metal straps as they do today. The bark had to be soaked overnight so it would be flexible enough to wrap around the orange crates.

Sarah, one of my dad's sisters, married Murray Hall, who was the railway station agent. They lived in a big two story house pretty close to where I was born. I Can see Uncle Murray now, looking at his watch every whipstitch. The only way we, as kids, got to hear baseball games was because of telegraph operators like Uncle Murray. We'd get in there in the railway depot office and we'd hang right over those operators to hear the game.

Another service the railroad gave was the frost warning. Whenever there was one severe weather forecast, the train would blow a special warning whistle. The big excitement of the day was the railroad, when trains 29 and 30 came in.

I can remember when the Town Hall was built by the Woodman of the World, but we called them the Wicked Old Women. I sold my sundries store to a man named Hardee who was a brother of the medical doctor, E. B. Hardee who practice in Vero for years. That store building was located on the south side of Main Street, across the street from where the big R. G. Hardee house was. My dad had the building moved up from the next street, Washington St., to the corner, had it revamped and that's when it turned into a drug store. The building was later moved back down to about the same location it was to begin with.

Doc Hamrick was over in Sloan's store, on the corner of the north side of Main Street. When the bank built the concrete building over there I opened a sundries store there and sold it to Doc Hamrick. He wasn't really a doctor, I don't know why he got that name.

By 1940 farming had nearly played out for my brother Roy in Sebastian, so we got together and decided to go into the laundry business. We started near Nacomis and eventually went on to Tampa, where we are both retired.

36. ADA6 BRADDOCK (WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER5, ELIZABETH WINNIFRED4 HADDOCK, JOSEPH3, ZACHARIAH2, JOHN1) was born November 04, 1880 in Seville, FL, and died June 15, 1964 in Bradenton, FL. She married CHARLES BERRY SMITH.

Notes for ADA BRADDOCK:

After father left, mother was left with four children to raise. I don't know where the house was that we lived in, in Sebastian, but my brother described it to me as being north of Main Street, up the railroad track maybe a quarter of a mile on the east side of the tracks. My brother tells me about walking back and forth on the railroad tracks. When my sister was born he had to run down the railroad tracks all the way to get Aunt Sarah, because Aunt Sarah was the midwife.

I used to ride the old train from Sebastian to Fellsmere when Aunt Sarah and Uncle Murray lived in Fellsmere. On that hot shot train they had out there. They ran the steam locomotive once a week and the other six days they ran a model T Ford with railroad wheels on it. I made many a trip on that model T Ford. They had one car they pulled behind.

When I was about four years old, Mother and us kids moved to Lakeland. My mother, Ada, got a boarding house in Lakeland and took in boarders. It was while we lived at Lakeland that I had the opportunity to visit with my grandfather so much. Mother remarried but he lived only a short time. Mostly she was on her own. Mother and us kids would come back often to visit in Sebastian, especially after she got a car. Even during the depression we'd drive to Sebastian to visit relatives.

61. GEORGE HOLMES7 BRADDOCK (GEORGE ALDRIDGE6, WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER5, ELIZABETH WINNIFRED4 HADDOCK, JOSEPH3, ZACHARIAH2, JOHN1) was born 1901 in Sharpes, FL, and died 1946 in Stockton, CA. He married MARIE ABERNATHY 1924 in Miami, Dade Co., FL.

Notes for GEORGE HOLMES BRADDOCK:

The following interview was made with Mrs. Marie Braddock at her home in Roseland, Florida, during April, 1986.

I was born in Forsyth, Georgia in 1901 and came to Roseland in 1921. I came here to live with my sister Lucille. Lucille and her husband Ben Creary, and their children Edwin and Merle lived in a house on Bay Street overlooking the river, and I lived with them about two years.

Lucille was teaching school at the Roseland schoolhouse on Power line Road and I taught at the Fleming Grant School, across the river in Brevard County for the 1921-22 term. The following term I taught at Roseland, and in Sebastian for the next 22 years. In 1946 I moved to Miami and taught school there for 19 years. I've taught for more than 41 years.

When I was teaching at Fleming Grant School, I had to walk to get there. I walked across the Sebastian River railroad bridge and then through the woods to the schoolhouse. My pupils at the one-room Fleming Grant School were mostly Grants, Cains and Stokes.

At that time Roseland was a small village with one store owned and operated by W. W. Holtzclaw; the Post Office with Annabelle Morgan acting as Postmaster and mail carrier to and from the train stop; the water pumping station for the railroad with Mr. Quinn Gibson as manager; and the Methodist Church which had no regular preacher, but Mr. Holtzclaw was Sunday School Superintendent. Mrs. Hammond ran a boarding house on the bay. There had been a saw mill across the river and there was a draw on the railroad bridge across the Sebastian River, so that boats could go up and down the river.

There must have been twenty or thirty families living in the Roseland area at that time. Among them were Ashburner, Fears, Stokes, Grant, Yongue, Ruffner, Richards, Thompson, Gibson, Matthews, Luce, Foster, Van Antwerp, Cain Hanshaw, Clark, White and Fields, besides the Crearys and Holtzlclaws already mentioned. Most of the men were grove workers or fishermen and some had worked at Mr. Creary's saw mill before it closed. In 1924 I married George Holmes Braddock. We had met in Sebastian. He was the son of George A. and Rebecca P. Braddock, and he had been born at Sharpes, Florida in 1901. He was named Holmes for the doctor who had delivered him.

We were married in Miami and stayed there for a while then came back to Sebastian, where George became so ill and went to Battle Creek, Michigan for treatment. While he was there I went back to Forsyth, Georgia, where our son, Grover Holmes Braddock was born on July 23, 1925.

George and I were divorced in 1934. He joined the Merchant Marine and in 1946 he was killed in Stockton, California in an accident. He is buried in Colma, California in a cemetery for seamen.

Our son Holmes, is a graduate of Vero Beach High School and the University of Miami. He has been a member of the Dade County School Board since 1962. One of my brothers, Cary Abernathy married a local girl, Lucy Yongue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Younge. Carey had come to Roseland to visit Lucille and met Lucy while he was here. They married in 1921 and moved to Miami, where they are buried.

My sister, Zada, married a local man, Roy Fields. They moved to Miami Also, where Roy worked as a plasterer for a while. Then he became well known as an orchid grower. Zada, Roy and their son Robert, are all buried in Miami.

I came back to Roseland in 1965. I had bought this house from Edna Holtzclaw around 1941, and I've been content since moving here.

Marie died in Miami, February 14, 1990 at age 88.
