What is St. Vladimir Church?

Almost two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ founded a Church upon the faith of his disciples. Over the centuries, their successors have gone into lands extending far past the apostles' native Israel. The Orthodox Church today is the continuation of that same Church.

In 1794 Orthodox Missionaries came to Alaska to begin missionary work among the native peoples in what would later become America. Orthodoxy would spread throughout both continents, and would later become (and remain today) the fastest growing Christian religion in the country.

Saint Vladimir Church in Miami is part of that historic continutity. From the first century of the common era up to today, the Orthodox faith is given inviolate and lived according to the ancient canons of the early Church. We welcome you to our Church community.

WHAT IS THE ORTHODOX CHURCH?

"The Orthodox Church was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ and is the living manifestation of His presence in the history of the mankind. The most conspicuous characteristics of Orthodoxy are its rich liturgical life and its faithfulness to the apostolic tradition. It is believed by Orthodox Christians that their Church has preserved the tradition and continuity of the ancient Church in its fullness compared to other Christian denominations which have departed from the common tradition of the Church of the first 10 centuries. Today Orthodox Church numbers approximately 300 million Christians who follow the faith and practices that were defined by the first seven ecumenical councils. The word orthodox ("right belief and right glory") has traditionally been used, in the Greek-speaking Christian world, to designate communities, or individuals, who preserved the true faith (as defined by those councils), as opposed to those who were declared heretical. The official designation of the church in its liturgical and canonical texts is "the Orthodox Catholic Church" (gr. catholicos = universal)." --From the Introduction to Orthodoxy from the Serbian Diocese of Razka and Prizren (click on the question above for the complete text!)

WHAT IS THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OUTSIDE RUSSIA?

"The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia is that part of the Russian Church which is outside the boundaries of the Russian State, governed at the present time by a Chief Hierarch and a Synod of Bishops chosen by the Sobor of Bishops of the Russian Diaspora." --From the History of the Church Abroad written by Saint John of Shanghai and San Fransisco (click on the question above for the full text!)
