G-Man

My name is Sean Glenn also known as G-Man. I was born in Newark, N.J. and lived there most of my life until moving to Florida. While living in New Jersey, I began my first encounters with music from being exposed to diverse genres of it at an early age. To explain, My family had extensive collections of albums that they would play often. As a result, I developed a natural understanding of it's versatility. For the most part, I took a very distinct liking to Jazz. As years went on, I also became enthralled with Hip Hop which brings me to this point. I have just completed my first CD titled, "The Unlocking: The First Movement EP" which is my initial attempt to bridge the gap between these distinct genres.

Click here peep a snippet from my current single I carefully selected elements of each to mesh together on the tracks of the CD. The results created an overall vibe that can be embraced by those who like Hip Hop or Jazz. Lyrically, I opted to develop my own original style and delivery with the subject matter being based on word skill and texture. The production ranged from programming to live instrumentation. I'm proud to say that my inspirations come from many of the Jazz greats from the past and presents. Among them are: Roy Ayers, Gil Scott-Heron, Joe Sample, Miles Davis, Ronnie Laws, Ramsey Lewis, and Ron Carter. Hip Hop influences include: The Roots, A Tribe called Quest, Gang Starr, Common, and Rakim. I attempted to focus on the listener and provide him/her with a excellent balance of lyrics and production. The Unlocking Epilogue

It was in the summer of 1995 that “The Unlocking” series began. I was just beginning to find my musical vision. Vividly, I recall having an affinity for jazzy textures and organic sounds. I then wanted to combine these with the lively beats present in Hip-Hop. Although this mixture of genres had been attempted before with such acts as A Tribe called Quest, Digable Planets, Pete Rock, Guru, and The Roots, I wanted to do my interpretation of this hybrid. The results were revealed officially in 1996 on my first disc titled, “The Unlocking: The First Movement EP”. This was a truly artistic project that was derived from spiritual influences. I received critical acclaim from the media for my efforts. . Tracks such as “Philosophies of Taoism,” and “Keep Buildin” proved to be defining indications of things to come. I took a hiatus in 1997 to continue my evolution as an artist and producer. I began to collaborate with other artists especially Marcus Hill, a very talented MC who is also part of GRS. I produced two tracks for him: “Distant Eyes”, and “Clear and Present Danger”. Consequently, I produced an R&B/Rap track for K.R. titled “Dance with Me”. I then produced more tracks for myself. At the time, I was the only artist from the GRS camp to come out. This is when I opted to produce a compilation CD titled, “GRS Records, Inc. presents: Collective vol.1.” This disk featured other GRS artists as well as guest appearances from other crews such as Paradox, DJ SPS of the 1200 Hobos, and well known instrumentalist Derek van Beezer, and Ed Krout to name a few. This proved to be a monumental step in my evolution as an artist and producer. My “sound” was really beginning to become refined. More importantly, I established my own original style and themes. Although I primarily recorded at Phat Planet studio with Ed Krout as my engineer for most of my career, I began to experiment with other studios and engineers to get different vibes and ideas. Among them was Audio Playground with Andy Andyrson, Reel Time Studio with Chris Pope, and G-Music Studios with Gerard Marino. All of which provided the patience and expertise to get me the sound style that I pursued. Through out my career, I learned that there must be a certain synchronicity between an engineer and producer. My recording situations with the aforementioned engineers have achieved this result. I began to brainstorm my concepts for my sophomore effort titled, “The Unlocking II: 7th Letter Opus” towards the end of 1997. I had grown significantly since “The Unlocking: The First Movement EP” was recorded. It was imperative for me to exploit my development on this CD. Most notably, my production style had evolved from a mellow style to a grittier sound. This in combination with my experimentation with opera samples broadened my sonic landscapes. My subject matter lyrically bordered on complex, abstract wordplay to life experiences. During my brief hiatus, I listened intently to the current trends in hip hop finding that there seemed to be opportunities for an artist such as my self to break through commercially. Especially, after seeing underground talents such as The Roots and Gang Starr attain commercial success. With this album I chose to stick with the formula used on my first disc. Therefore, It would be titled, ”The Unlocking II.” I continued to use spiritual influence in which I expressed in indirect ways. Moreover, I wanted to relay a lot of the symbolism that was in my thoughts. Specifically, My belief that my talents were inspired by God through being marked by his number “7”. A few examples include: Gman-G is the 7th letter of the alphabet, born in 1967, live on 7th street, weighed 7 pounds at birth, and released first CD in 1997. With such influence, I experienced going through a musical renaissance to capture my most current perspectives. So, sit back and enjoy the ride until I go into my next movement.

G-Man on the keys.

It seems like only yesterday when I first heard The Ultramagnetic MC's drop "Critical Beatdown." At the time, I had only heard the most popular hip hop artists that happened to "crossover". I don't mean that as an insult. To explain, I had moved to Florida during those times and all we would get from New York was the Run-DMC's.The Whodini's, or The Jeckyll & Hyde's etc. I was definitely feelin all of them. But, in hindsight, I must say that my earliest introduction to abstract lyricism came from "Ultra." I loved the complexity involved in the verse structure and patterns. I actually began to seek out other artist that incorporating these rhyme techniques. My quest would lead me to such pioneers as Rakim, Mo Dee(remember him), G Rap, Just Ice, KRS, and Kane to name a few. I was an avid listener of MC's with "lyrical" styles. But, hip hop has now evolved into BIG business and as a result alot of the essence is gone. I often ask myself why it took so long for me to drop. My best answer is that "lyrical" MC's are becoming more and more scarce. I seen breakdancing go through the same evolution in the eighties by becoming a fad instead of being one of the cornerstones of Hip Hop. Of course, real hip hoppers know that breakdancing is as well respected as emceeing or Graffiti art for that matter. The point is I didn't want to see time pass me by without expressing my own personal perspectives. My first recording experiences dealing with hip hop was to refine my style lyrically, and sonically. Over the years, I listened to such artists as Gang Starr, Pete Rock, A Tribe called Quest, Common, and The Roots among others for influence. My evolution from1994 to the present was a combination of such things as originality, style, and versatility. Experimentation is a huge part of my expression. In fact, media publications have referred to my material as eclectic or alternative hip hop. I didn’t consciously seek such a sheer description but my sonic landscapes range from organic to dark or melancholy. In addition, there is a solid presence of symbolism, and spiritual references in my lyrical subject matter. Being that I am a pupil of meditation, I sought to stimulate the listener with lyrics that require thought.

The Book of Seven: A Prophecy fulfilled

Seven

This number occurs frequently in Scripture, and in such connections as lead to the supposition that it has some typical meaning. On the seventh day God rested, and hallowed it (Gen. 2:2, 3). The division of time into weeks of seven days each accounts for many instances of the occurrence of this number. This number has been called the symbol of perfection, and also the symbol of rest. "Jacob's seven years' service to Laban; Pharaoh's seven fat oxen and seven lean ones; the seven branches of the golden candlestick; the seven trumpets and the seven priests who sounded them; the seven days' siege of Jericho; the seven churches, seven spirits, seven stars, seven seals, seven vials, and many others, sufficiently prove the importance of this sacred number" (see Lev. 25:4; 1 Sam. 2:5; Ps. 12:6; 79:12; Prov. 26:16; Isa. 4:1; Matt. 18:21, 22; Luke 17:4). The feast of Passover (Ex. 12:15, 16), the feast of Weeks (Deut. 16:9), of Tabernacles (13:15), and the Jubilee (Lev. 25:8), were all ordered by seven. Seven is the number of sacrifice (2 Chr. 29:21; Job 42:8), of purification and consecration (Lev. 42:6, 17; 8:11, 33; 14:9, 51), of forgiveness (Matt. 18:21, 22; Luke 17:4), of reward (Deut. 28:7; 1 Sam. 2:5), and of punishment (Lev. 26:21, 24, 28; Deut. 28:25). It is used for any round number in such passages as Job 5:19; Prov. 26:16, 25; Isa. 4:1; Matt. 12:45. It is used also to mean "abundantly" (Gen. 4:15, 24; Lev. 26:24; Ps. 79:12).

The Book of Se7en: A Prophecy fulfilled

What's up yawl? Welcome back to my world!! It's me again….My third joint!!! You know, I'm starting to enjoy this. This time I recorded on the West Coast. It was definitely a different vibe out there. I had my first opportunity to explore a new direction and energy. I seen and been around some platinum cats and definitely learned what it is to floss and politic'. But, in all honesty, much of what u see is not what is real. Very disappointing , I must say… It was so much that I had on my mind since the last CD (The Unlocking II: 7th Letter Opus). This time around, I had a chance to meditate and isolate. I really grew in another direction. Yes, I flipped it!!! The next movement is here!!! "The Book of Se7en: A Prophecy fulfilled" is now in your CD changer. I co-directed my first video while out west which dramatically broadened my concept of creation. So, as a result, "The Book of Se7en:A Prophecy fulfilled" would have epic expectations for me personally. I had my first meetings with professionals that taught me some really important recording techniques especially, in engineering. I hope u all can notice. This should be sonically impressive because since the last CD, I worked very hard on training my ear to maximum efficiency. I also used a wide spectrum of gear most notably, the MPC 2000, was instrumental in making my beats as hot and sparse as I have ever hoped. I spent a lot of time studying the engineering and production methods of the legendary Bob Power (see "The Roots", "Erykah Badu", "Rahzel", "Tribe", etc.) Oh, before I forget, let me explain my track numbering system. First of all, As of the end of my last CD, I have a grand total of 21 recorded tracks. Therefore,"The Book of Se7en: A Prophecy fulfilled" starts at 22. Now, back to Bob Power. Of course, it would've been a dream to have him behind the boards at my sessions but who knows? Maybe one day I will get a chance to meet him. Until then, I have to do the best job I can to get that "quiet" mix. I know that with this CD, I will finally solidfy my grasp of the of "The organic technique" in which I began on my disc. U ain't know??? Enough of this credit stuff…..Peep it!!!!!!!!

The Journey

You know…through the labors of putting together such an epic album, I was met with a lot of opposition and questions. Examples include: Why so many songs? Why so many styles? Why didn't u allow any outside production? Why so little guest appearances? Etc. The answers center around me making a passionate attempt to be versatile without boundaries. I am a recording ARTIST in the purist sense…not just an emcee! My music is spontaneous and impromptu…So, As a result, I dared to color outside of the lines of "defined" Hip Hop. I made an attempt to create a "book" in CD form. This "book" is complete with different chapters (songs). So, upon an initial listen, one might say, "well, Gman wasn't focused from track to track!"" The fact is….I wasn't!! I chose to display my range as an ARTIST and show some of my personal perspectives on wax…..To explain, U know, Sometimes I like to be like lyrical, sometimes I like to be poignant and poetic, sometimes I even like to sing, sometimes I like to floss, sometimes I like to be underground, or I may even like mass appeal….In other words, there are many colors on the palette!!! I am not afraid to try different things musically. However, make no mistake, I am rooted in the Hip Hop schools that putsforth the Pete Rocks,The Commons, The D'angelos, The Badus, The Gang Starrs, The Most Defs, or the Tribe called Quests of the world…I don't stray too far from this institution…. The journey of this album was quite difficult and trying. Personally, I was going through some serious stress and fighting some inner demons…You know, the regular…failed relationships, broken promises, enviromental changes, person focus, finances etc. My soul was out of sync at critical times. But, I fought hard and won!! I am a winner and thankfully, I am very spiritual and DEEP….Therefore, I took time to lose myself in thought and meditation. I expressed some of my sentiment on this album through some of my poetic passages. Although they may seem abstract to most, I am still trying to regain complete focus and fulfillment of my potential….I hope that u all continue to evolve with me. I send all the positive energy within me to u ALL!!!! Peace & Blessings, GMAN

The power of thought defines much of who I am. Therefore, I am an advocate of the teachings of "Taoism and The principals of Feng Shui( The art of placement). These are philosophies not religions. So, don't get it twisted. Through my approach in life, I find that these elements have allowed me to achieve balance and perseverence fn the face of life's obstacles. The entire universe is moving and changing all the time. Life is a progression of change, from birth to death. According to these teachings, we are presently in the Seven Period (1984-2003)Seven is symbolic to God. G is 7th letter of the alphabet. G-Man elevates Minds through Music and word expression. It's all relative. May the five elements be with you in a positive energy." 1LUV, G-Man

The ancient principles of Feng SHui

The Ruists consider man as part of the Universe he lives in. Man should respect what Mother Nature bestows on him and not to act against Heaven. This in fact is what man should do to protect environment. Furthermore, a man's path of life is influenced by Heaven luck, Earth luck and Man luck. A modern way of saying this is that a man's path of life is described by three elements: time, space, and action. The time element is the luck function of a man in terms of time with his birth moment as initial condition. The space element is the place of birth of a man and the place where he lives. The element of action is what a man does. If a man does the right thing at the right time and right place, he will be fortunate. Otherwise, he will encounter hardship. To pursue Earth luck is simply to find a place in harmony with Nature to live in and to work. Can you say this is superstition?

TAOISM and ITS MANIFESTATIONS

TAO is that which encompasses the Universe and gives it dimension. Its height cannot be measured nor its depths fathomed. It made visible what at first had no form. Flowing like a fountain its energies penetrated the void and filled space. By ceaselessly flowing, it transformed murky chaos into crystal clearness. TAO is that which penetrates the Universe and touches every part of it. It cannot be exhausted; it knows neither exuberance nor decay. If it could be opened out it would fill the entire Universe; if it could be gathered together, it would not even fill a child's hand.

"G's Creed"

Existing in the second score of life, I am late in bloom, Hearth resides deep within, Onlookers near and far scorn at my inevitable augmentation, Yet, The light they see is Dim, Within, it soulfully profound, Scarily luminous, Latent mystery, Perhaps one may take notice, Perhaps not, One must seek promise instead of quantity, Steadfastfulness instead of superficial gratification, It is these unjust measurements that forever quells me, For these judges who behold such a supple persona, My silence roars loudly across the fields of life and living, Mutiny feels my Soul, Body, and Mind, My silence forever speaks volumes of the language of Peace.-GMan
