Chapter 5

Both Kitra and Thom were aware that Ixtchil was a Zodiac Demon. Months ago, Skan and several of his friends had battled the Zodiac Demon and a few of his cohort demons. They barely survived. Ixtchil took over Luren, an enemy of Skan's, and threatened Skan directly.

This battle had taken place in the dojo.

"Find anything here?" asked Thom, looking through a pile of weapons in the corner.

"Yes," said Kitra's voice. "I found a Zodiac Monster."

"What!?" asked Thom, whirling around. He clutched his spear tightly. In the corner of his eye, he saw Kitra, too, spin around, a sword magically appearing in her hand.

In the center of the room, Thom could feel a presence. Then, in a flash of blue light, Skan stood there, arms crossed over his chest. "Now, isn't this a happy bunch?" That voice was all to like Skan's, with a slight sense of mockery and joking in it. Thom shivered.

"I know it's not you, Skan! It's the Zodiac Monster!"

Skan shook his head. "No, Thom. It's me. In the flesh. Right here. Your best friend, Thom! Would Tirkul know that we served in the Blue Spears together? I taught you the ropes even though I was younger? Does Tirkul know you used to be the Guild's Co-Leader before you got too busy to run it? No, Thom, it's me."

Kitra saw the look on Thom's face and took a step forward. "You can't mess with our minds, Tirkul! We know what's going on!"

Skan laughed. What started out as a small chuckled erupted into a roaring laugh that made both Kitra and Thom take a nervous step back. "Do you understand what power I have? Either of you? Come. Let's dance."

Thom did not want to fight. In fact, he almost stepped back. But, he remembered a promise he gave to Skan, a while ago.

Thom... if I ever give in... then promise me... kill me as I am. I want to die a human, Thom, not a demon!

"I'm sorry, Skan," said Thom. "But this has to be done!"

In a flash, Skan was moving. He took off in a run, then in a huge leap, flippng over the heads of both Kitra and Thom. Kitra turned to face Skan, but as soon as he landed, Skan struck out with his whip, knocking Kitra on her back. Thom charged with his spear, and Skan used the momentum of his attack to spin around and kick Thom in the head with a crushing round house blow.

Thom went down, feeling blood over his face. Kitra groggily got back up, and Skan laughed. "I wasn't this strong last time we fought, was I, sis?" Skan said, saying 'sis' in a mocking tone of voice.

Kitra growled at being used the nick name Skan gave her, and put her hands together. They began glowing with a orange light, and with a yell, she leaped back. Her hands shot out, and a beam of light struck where Skan stood. The ground burst into fire.

"I'm not that easy to kill," Skan mocked from the flames, unseen.

A blue sparkle came from the fire. Then an aura of blue light surrouned where Skan was. Blue spirits roared as they flew into the center of the light-where Kitra would bet the stone was. Then, electricity sparkled, and a blue explosion rocked the room, the blue spirits escaping once again.

The fire was instantly quenched as Thom got to his feet, feeling his nose. It was most definately broken.

Where the fire stood, was Tirkul. Thom made a gasping sound.

"Ha. What you just fought was only a warm-up," Tirkul said.

"I can't fight him now!" Thom yelled to Kitra. "I promised to kill him as a human, not as a demon!"

"You WILL fight!" said Kitra angrily. "If we do not, Tirkul will wreak havoc among our land. He will be killed, but by strangers. And no matter what happens, it will be in his demon form!"

"Hahaha! Where I go, pain and fighting follow!" roared Tirkul. He lifted a hand, palm facing Kitra and Thom. "Water Arrow!"

Several dozen rods of water hung in the air, then one after another, streaked towards Thom. Thom leapt to the side, but was not fast enough. Arrow after arrow punctured his body, and did not stop there; they sped straight through him. He coughed blood and fell on his back, unmoving. Kitra brought up a sheild of green energy just in time that the water arrows could not penetrate.

Tirkul lifted the same hand in the air and rotated it by the wrist. "Water Lance!"

Kitra danced to the side as three massive water lances-larger versions of the water arrow-struck where she stood moments ago. Then she brought up her hand, and with a red pulse of her Ken'Oh, a massive fireball sped towards Tirkul.

Tirkul brought up his own sheild, a deep blue one, and the fire was instantly quenched when it struck. Then he raised his hands high. "Water Pillar!"

The ground shook. From underneath, a massive column of water struck at Kitra, a blow she could not dodge. The water carried her up several feet, before Tirkul yelled, "Water Blast!"

A stream, of water, as thick as Kitra was tall, shot towards her with uncanny accuracy. She was knocked out of the air where she was suspened by the water pillar and hit the ground hard.

Tirkul waited a few minutes, until he was sure no one would be getting up again. Then he turned. "Because they were the only ones that knew!" he said to himself. Then in a flash of blue light, was gone.
