Savonius Lawgiver founded the Savonian Empire, which occupies one of the largest continents on Ulthang, more than 10,000 years ago. The gods of law, who admired Savonius' dedication to making law out of chaos, gave him the Regalia of Law, a collection of five powerful artifacts, uniting the warring and lawless factions into an organized empire, with a highly structured order of nobility. Each successive emperor, who is always a decedent of Savonius Lawgiver, takes the name Savonius when he takes the crown. Upon the Emperor’s death, he is given a title by his successor (Savonius the Wise, Savonius the Dragonslayer, Savonius the Not-So-Brave Who Wet Himself at Devil Mountain, etc.)
Savonia City, the capitol and ancestral home of the Emperor, has a current population of 3,000,000, although this has been much higher in the past. The city, like the rest of the empire is still recovering from the great bug invasion 120 years ago, when insect-like beings from another dimension invaded Ulthang and destroyed most of the global population. Despite the damage wrought by the bugs, Savonia City is still a marvel of advanced society. With its many libraries and understudies, it is a Mecca for scholars and sages, not to mention a booming trade center. It is rumored that you can buy anything at the bazaar, if you have enough money and know whom to ask.
Marnizal is the center of power for Lord Valkenor IV. It was established by the first Lord almost a century ago as the seat from which power would emanate throughout the Northern Reaches. Perched on a cliff overlooking the junction of the Seamother and the Cursed Rivers, it is a busy trading center. It's population of over 50,000 enjoys every modern convenience. All manner of arts and crafts are produced here, and anything not made locally may be found in the Merchant's Square, known throughout the empire as the pinnacle of shopping pleasure. Marnizal is bordered on the west by the Seamother River, to the south is fertile farmland, and the Northern border is defined by the Cursed River, with vast gazing plains for horses and cattle beyond. The Church of Alda Perez, renowned for its architectural beauty, lies in the shadow of Lord Valkenor's palace, a true a marvel of human accomplishment. In addition to the many businness travelers, each year the city draws thousands of visitors for its beauty alone.
