At Kunsan Air Base the Air Force Ladies Dormitory was next to the Red Horse Dormitory down by the Base Theater. One night the fire alarm in the Ladies Dormitory was set off and someone reported that they saw a Red Horseman running from the Ladies Dormitory. The next morning our commander had us all in formation standing tall reading us the riot act and threatening us with punishment if he ever found out who set off the fire alarm in the Ladies Dormitory. Well, I just want to say one thing on this subject. I wonder what the commander would have said, had he known that it was one of his bright and shinning Lieutenants that had set off the alarm. And that he was standing there beside him as he (our Red Horse Commander) chewed us out for the deed that the young Lieutenant had committed. Most of us that were standing in that formantion knew who had puled the fire alarm in the ladies dorm and it was comforting to know that it was not one of us, but that it was one of the commanders own officers. The commander just knew that it was someone wearing a red hat and he just knew it had to be one of us. Well the joke is on him.

RED HORSE COMMANDERS
and
DETACHMENT COMMANDERS
Colonel Glaze was the Red Horse Commander in Korea for three years. Don't believe any other Red Horse Commander spent that long with the 554CESHR Squadron. During his tenure Red Horse flurished and accomplished many building projects in Korea, Japan, and Okinawa. During this period of time Red Horse got involved with the three different methods for Rapid Runway Repairs. A Red Horse Team from Osan, Korea was put together and they traveled throughout the various Air Force Bases in the PACAF theatre, teaching Civil Engineers assigned to those bases the three methods for rapid runway repairs. Red Horse well drilling was also revived and a well drilling team was put together and traveled from base to base drilling water wells. Upon leaving Red Horse in Korea, Colonel Glaze became the PACAF Command Civil Engineer. Colonel Harry Glaze is retired from the Air Force and was last known to live in the Fort Meyers, Florida area working in the Department Of Transportation.

Col Sims was an environmental engineer and was a real fine Red Horse Commander. Upon completion of his tour as the Red Horse Commander in Korea, Col Sims was assigned as the 18th Civil Engineering Groups Commander at Kadena, Okinawa.

When Major Hall came to the detachment at Kunsan, I thought, "OH NO, Now we have a flying officer (C-141s I believe it was)as a commander that probably knows nothing about Red Horse or engineering. Guess what, he didn't need to know much. Not to say he didn't, but he was a real fine manager who let the people that worked for him do their thing. You know putting together preengineered buildings and things like that. It was a pleasure having Major Hall as our commander.

Major Birch was also a good commander, but took things a little too serious. He needed to lighten up a little and enjoy his tour in Red Horse.

Major Maxey loved playing with our concrete. He was constantly changing our mixing ratios for concrete. He used to say and I quate, "Making concrete is like mixing dough for a cake." Major Maxey liked having concrete classes and we learned a lot about concrete from his presentations.

During our Red Horse Christmas Party at Kunsan Air Base, Major Maxey enjoyed dressing up like Santa Claus. James Anderson is the small boy on Lieutenant Barnaby's shoulders. MSgt Dimbo is on the right hand side of the picture.

Major Hanes was a fine officer and a real good commander. His only fault was that he liked to run. And thought that the rest of us in Red Horse should like to run also. So he had us out running a lot, even though a lot of us was not particuliarly found of running.

Major Frazer came to the Detachment at Kunsan after I was transfered to Red Horse Headquarters at Osan. But I met him on a few occassions and he seemed to be a good man for the job at Kunsan. Wonder who picks the commanders for Red Horse. They usually hit the nail on the head and get us real good people.
