Job Title: Combat Videographer, MOS 4671

Here in Twentynine Palms, I work for the Headquarters Battalion (HQBN), Alph Comany (A CO), Combat Visual Information Center (CVIC), Combat Center Television (CCTV). Phew! Long title there!

My unit is broken up into two sections in two different buildings. One building is the MultiMedia Building, it houses the Graphics (4611) and Photographers (4641). Then there is the Television side of the house. We are in a seperate building , and only the videographers work there.

As a videographer, we do many different things here on base. We run a base channel, that tells people on base whats going on, and any important information that they need to know. They find this out by just turning their tvs to channel six. Every morning we have to update this using our computer. Its very simple, as it is just a powerpoint show connected to a tv signal.

Another thing that we do here on base is record the live fire training that happens out in the desert ranges. The base is comprised of two parts, the "Mainside", which is where the people live and work in the shops, and we have the Commissary and PX, and then there is the Ranges. There are many different ranges here in 29 Palms. There is about 900 sq. ft. of training area out there. In my job, we either go out with a small camera and go with the troops and get footage or we use one of our stationary cameras.

Our stationary cameras, are cameras that stay out in the field the whole time. Each camera is hooked up to a microwave feeder/reciever, and that is how we control and get the data from the cameras. We have a humvee that has been altered so that there is a computer system in the back, with monitors so that we can see whats on each camera. we then use a recorder to record what each camera is seeing. This helps us to give the units more insight on how their training is going.

And finally, we do production work. What this means, is all of the "garrison" or base work. It could include filming a ceremony, such as retirements, promotions, anniversary of the base and change of commands. Then we have a duplication center, where you can bring something in that has already been recorded and get it duplicated however many times on whatever type of media that you need it. Then we have a studio. We can use this studio just like a news studio. We film people with the blue backdrop behind them and then can add in anything we want in the post-production phase. Post production is where we use the computer stations and the AVID program to cut and paste together a real show, just like something you would see on TV. Thats one of my favorite parts of the job.
