This will become a data base of some names of soldiers of the 40th Regiment of Foot for 1854. This was gathered from the pay lists AJCP WO 12

My ancestor William Prayle was at the Eureka Stockade uprising in December 1854.
I have just started to do research on him being there with the 40th Regiment of Foot.
Thanks to George for supplying the following information I did not have
William Prayle Private, age 34,
5ft 5in tall, brown hair, Blue eyes,fair complexion,

On the 12th July, the Reg't under the command of Lt Col T.J. Valiant embarked on H.M Steam Ship Vulcan and sailed on the 15th, arriving in Hobsons Bay, Port Phillip on the 19th October, disembarked at Melbourne on the 4th and 5th November 1852
The regiment left Australia in 1860 for New Zealand for the Maori War. They returned to England in 1866, and after various postings they went to Ireland untill 1872, when once again the 40th was posted to India.

Extra money was earnt for good behaviour.

40TH REGIMENT OF FOOT
This certificate is an original that has been in the family since 1857. William Prayle was my Great Great Grandfather. He settled in Ballarat.
More details added soon.
