There are all sorts of "helps" out there for writers -- I use Hollywood Screenplay (formatting version only) so I don't have to mess with margins and tabs. Lots of available software will even help you figure out the elements of telling a good story (screenplay or novel). I think that's probably okay when you are just learning, but you need to absorb your craft so, after you've studied those essential basics, relying too much on a computer program as your source of "creativity" just doesn't make too much sense to me.

But that's all really up to you to decide, so I'll list here all the writer's software I can find (some of it will be stand-alone programs and some will be add-ons to Word). It's your job to go research and find the product that's right for you. Happy hunting!

Adobe Acrobat Reader
(it's F-R-E-E !!)

If you do not already have this valuable piece of software, you do need to go get it. Many scripts are exchanged in the .PDF format, which is read by the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader. Furthermore, much of the research material available to you as a writer-on-the-web will only be available in the .PDF format.

Ah....but how do you convert your own files into the .PDF format? The free Reader allows you to read them, yes, but you will need to be able to convert as well. For that you need the ADOBE ACROBAT.

Click on the logo on the left to find out more about Adobe Acrobat. Click on the "Free Trial" graphic below to try it out for free (you get three free uses).

Mike's Free Add-ons for WordPerfect

Here are Mike's own words about the add-ons he created: "Script Assistant (script.wcm), Sitcom Assistant (sitcom.wcm) and Screen Play Assistant (screenpl.wcm) are three WordPerfect for Windows macros I wrote to make it easier for playwrights and screenwriters to use WordPerfect for script writing. "Readthis.txt" is the accompanying help file. You can download them separately or as a zipped archive."

Sophocles is a new screenplay software program that emphasizes the writing process. While other script writing software puts the focus on margins and page breaks, Sophocles was conceptualized from the start as a story creation tool for screenwriters. By allowing you to easily navigate and manipulate your story elements, Sophocles helps you craft a tighter, smoother flowing screenplay. Click on the logo above to go to the Sophocles Home Page and learn more about this software.

Simply put, a Writer's Block is a container that holds text. Each block can be used to enter an idea, scene, point, etc. Like using electronic note cards, Writers Blocks allows you to easily and efficiently manipulate ideas. Unlike ordinary paper note cards, Writers Blocks lets you easily edit, arrange, re-number, and print your blocks. Arranging your blocks with drag and drop ease, you can quickly and easily organize your story into a coherent outline.

Add-on for Microsoft Word

Screenplay Styler
Screenplay Styler is a template formatted for writing screenplays with Microsoft Word 97.

Screenwright(R)
Screenplay Formatter
Screenwright(R) is a WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows screenplay formatting add-on which automates the screenwriting process to a degree approached before now only by the costly standalone script processors. This shareware includes intuitive tools, which remember characters, locations, and a glossary; it also has full production-standard features.
