TRUE WESTERN BADMEN

 

John "Doc" Holliday, the deadly dentist and gambler who lived gambled, and practiced dentistry in Dallas in early 1870s before having to flee to the rough Fort Griffin area after killing a rancher and then destiny at the OK Corral in Tombstone.

 

Blazed his way into the history books for role at the O.K. Corral along with the Earp brothers in Oct. 1881. He died in the Glenwood Springs, Colorado sanitarium in 1885 at the age of 35...Known to have killed several men in Texas, Kansas, and Arizona....

 

 

Under the leadership of  the former Ohio school teacher and later  Civil War guerilla leader, men like Jesse & Frank James , George Todd and the Youngers, became famous outlaws. All of whom rode under the Black Flag. Quantrill was killed in Kentucky..

One of  many the Earp brothers had a vested interest in.  Saloon was  scene of many bloody brawls and shootings. A favorite hangout for some of the most famous and notorius lawmen and bad men alike......

 

Ben Thompson, who spent a life of gambling and gunfighting, was assassinated along with gunfighter, John King Fisher, in a Austin, Texas theater in 1884..

 
 
 

Mysterious Dave Mather

Had a reputation as a gunfighter in Kansas. He walked up behind  a    victim and shot him through the  head. He was credited with killing several men before disappearing into history..

African-American former slave turned Texas cowboy and noted rustler who was shot down while rustling in 1903....

          

 

 

Marion Hedgepeth

He formed a gang of train robbers in 1890 called the Hedgepeth's Four and went on a tear. Detective William Pinkerton, who chased him for years, once stated that he was a incredible fast draw , bad clear thru, and little -known, but terrible gunfighter..

 

 
Bill Longley was often referred to as the bad son of Texas. Like John Wesley Hardin, his beginning of lawlessness began as a hatred of the freed slaves. He was known as the "Texan". He killed 32 men before hanging at Giddings, Texas in 1878. Age: 27.  

 

 

 

  John King Fisher who was a  rancher as well as a noted gunman and rustler along the Texas-Mexico border, was a crack shot. He admitted to killing seven men but did not count Mexicans. He met his waterloo in a ambush in Austin, Texas along with Ben Thompson..
   

Cherokee Bill, real name: Crawford Goldsby. Roamed and killed many, with his gang in Oklahoma. Hanged at Ft. Smith, Arkansas by the famous (Hanging Judge),Isac Parker.

  Jesse's (?) remains were recently dug up in Texas. Was death a elaborate hoax.. Read 1950 news article on J. Frank Dalton , affidavits of former gang members Black Jack Ketchem, like Butch Cassidy and many other outlaws, had been a cowboy in Utah. When  hung in 1901 in Arizona, his head was torn off his shoulders..

Wes Hardin , THE TERROR FROM TEXAS.  Killed about (45) men. Became a lawyer. Met his waterloo in Acme Saloon, El Paso, 1895. Shot in back by a lawman

Clay Allison ,The homicidal Texas rancher and gunman, once killed a rustler, cut off his head and took it into his favorite saloon. He killed gunfighter, Chunk Colbert while the two sat eating..

Harry Longbaugh. Better known as the "Sundance Kid". He rode with Butch Cassidy & gang.

   

Pearl Hart is credited with America's last stagecoach robbery. Her and partner Joe robbed the stage at Globe, Arizona

   

Belle Starr, the Bandit Queen. Had a child by the Cole Younger of the famed James Gang. She lived in Dallas for several years. Arrested for horse stealing.

  Sam was a  half-breed from the Nations. Belle, a  rustler,  one time lover of  Cole Younger, spent time  in Dallas area farming & in  jail before being bushwacked at Younger's Bend, Indian Territory on 3 Feb. 1889. It was rumored for many years that the last words she whispered in her daughter's (Pearl Starr) ear was that her son had waited along the trail outside of Younger's Bend and shot her in the back.. There is still a street here in Dallas where Belle lived with family named: Belle Starr Ave...

 

 

Civil War's bloodiest guerilla leader, who had the title "The Bloodiest Man In America" was a school teacher. He and his first in command, William, "Bloody Bill" Anderson riding under the Black Flag were  famous  for the Lawrence  Kansas, Raid. During the 1863 raid on the pro-Union town town, (150) civilian men and boys were slaughtered. They set  homes on fire before getting drunk amid the ruins.. Command consisted  of future outlaws, Jesse & Frank JamesCole, Bob, and Jim Younger, and Bloody Bill Anderson.. Almost met his waterloo at Coffeyville, Kansas with the infamous Dalton Gang. Horse came up lame a few miles out of town.  He turned back, thus living long enough to form his own gang after the deaths of the Daltons in Coffeyville.. Doolin was being hunted by a group of noted lawmen and man-killers out of Judge  Parker's, (The Hanging Judge) court in Ft. Smith , Arkansas. He was killed from a shotgun blast from U.S. Marshal Heck Thomas as he emerged from a farmhouse with his wife and kid in August 1896...

 

 

Black Bart, real name Charles Bolton, the famed road agent, robbed a score of stagecoaches before  Pinkertons caught him. He always left a poem behind for the lawmen trackers.

Joaquin Murieta, the legendary Californian bad man. When killed, the lawmen cut off his head...

   

Della Rose, member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch. Look like a hard woman.

   

As to the head of the famous Mexican bandito, the poster says it all. The reward was never paid to the lawmen..

  Real name: Robert Leroy Parker. Took his name from famous rustler, Mike Cassidy. Butch was leader of the  "Hole In The Wall Gang" in 1897. Rumor is he and the Sundance Kid were not killed in Bolivia

 

The hard as nails lawmen, The Earp brothers had a interest in this establishment as well as others. They disliked the way cowboys made their money. A hatred between them and the cowboy faction-The Clantons.

 

The controversial shooting of Billy The Kid by sheriff: Pat Garrett in dark bedroom of Pete Maxwell's home. Some say he murdered the Kid. Garrett was killed during a argument on road to Las Cruces, New Mexico 29 Feb. 1908...

 

 

Ned Christi, outlaw in the Indian Territory, he shot up banks, trains, and lawmen.

   

Buckskin Frank Leslie.,  on both sides of the law at times, was a dangerous gunfighter friend of the Earps and Holliday in Kansas and Tombstone. He wore a special fast draw gun rig.

 

Shot down by Deputies at Round Rock, Texas on his 28TH birthday. He and gang had a cave hideout in Denton, Texas.....

Sam Bass

He robbed several trains and stagecoaches before being shot down while robbing the general store at Round Rock .His biggest train holdup was $30,000.00. . Owners of the land in Denton on which his cave hideout was located, were at one time letting treasure hunters look around the area.  Stopped practice few years ago.

 

 

Despite legend, it is known for sure that he killed (6) men instead of the (21) that history suggest !!!!

 

The Youngers, Jim, Rhetta, Bob, and Cole. Members of the infamous James Gang. They were shot up pretty bad at the failed Northfield, Minnesota bank robbery in 1876.

   

Cattle Annie (Annie McDougal) and Little Britches (Jennie Stevens) joined up with the infamous Doolin Gang in the Indian Territory. They were both sent to prison in Boston.

 

The Apache Kid

Former sergeant of scouts. He was a one-man terror in the Indian Territory. With $5000.00 on his head,he vanished.

Henry Starr

Deemed as one of the most famous train robbers of the west , and nephew of the famous bandit queen, Belle Starr, met his end while robbing a  Arkansas bank.

 

John Selman will always be known to historians as the man that shot down the once "Terror of Texas" John Wesley Hardin. He shot Hardin in  Acme saloon in El Paso while Hardin was shaking dice at bar...

Butch Cassidy

Leader of the infamous Wild Bunch in which  Kid Curry, and the Sundance Kid were dedicated and hard riding and straight shooting members.

Dead Man's Hand

This hand of aces and eights will forever be the topic of the "Wild Bill" Hickok legend. He was holding this hand when Jack McCall shot him in the back of the head in a Deadwood, South Dakota saloon in 1876. The same year  Custer met his waterloo at the Big Horn..

 

Harvey Logan

alias: Kid Curry, member of the Wild Bunch gang under Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, was considered the best member with a gun. He killed several men...

1974 Update on Butch Cassidy

Mrs. Lula Parker Betenson, 90, Logan, Utah, says her brother, Butch Cassidy, wasn't killed in South America with the Sundance Kid but returned to the U.S. and lived for a good many years. She defended Butch as a good boy who got off on the wrong foot but concedes " he broke my mother's heart. "
