Harry Potter

For some odd reason the films title in the UK is "Philosophers Stone"
Why, i have no idea.  England has something against Sorcerers?

As I so declared in my Movies section of this site, I went into this movie not knowing what to expect.  I had heard of the books while i was in college, and what intrested me about them was the fact that they were childrens books, yet the only people i saw reading them were adults.  I'd walk down Market Street in San Francisco, and sitting out in front of the coffee shops were grown men and women reading Harry Potter books.  That told me right away that there was something more to Harry Potter than just kid stuff.  However it never spurred me into picking the books up myself.  Honestly, i think i was a little put off by the ugly cover art.   LOL.  Shame on me, judging a book by its cover.

So when i heard about the movie, i was like, "oh cool, now i dont have to read the books."  I expected the movie to be good, but the trailers i saw for it didnt impress me much.  A movie about magic school.   Whoopty doo.  Well, it just so happened that they were SUPPOSED to be showing the Star Wars trailer with Harry Potter, so of course i rushed out to see it opening night.  I didnt get to see my Star Wars trailer, but instead i got something else.

This film was incredible.  I've seen it five times.  Its still in theatres, and i'm just dying for it to come out on DVD.  I even considered buying a black market copy until i decided not to taint my viewing experiences with such a low quality video.  So instead, i picked up the book.   So far i've read the first two.  Soon as i'm done with the book i'm reading now, i'll pick up the third.

I have become obsessed with Harry Potter.

Okay.  So then i had to ask myself.   "Teke.  Why are you obsessed with Harry Potter?  Yes, its good, but come on."  Strangely enough, it wasnt until i was listening to the song Alpha Omega by Project Pitchfork that i realised why.  In the world of Wizards, Harry is famous.  He's a hero.  However in the world of Muggles, where he was raised, and where he has to go back each summer, Harry is certainly NOT treated like a hero.   He's treated like a freak.  He's been shit on his entire life, and treated like a burden by his own family.  Harry had never been loved by anyone that he could remember.

To me, Harry's life is symbolic in a way thats very similar to The Neverending Story.  The world of Wizards is a place of wonder.   Its a place of creativity.  The only place where Harry feels like he belongs.   For the first time in his life he is accepted by someone, and actually has friends.   But of course he still has to periodically return to reality, to the Muggles.

Muggles, IMO, are the boreing uncreative people of the world.  People who can only see the present day as it is.  People without imagination.  People who dont know how to have fun.  People who dont dream.   I hate those kind of people, and always have.  While my family certainly isnt as bad as the Dursleys, and i never lived in a cupboard under the stairs, I can empathize with Harry.  I'm creative.  A dreamer.  I hate the present day world, and i honestly dont feel like i belong in it.

So wouldnt it be the most amazing thing, to all of a sudden be rescued from such a frusterating, dissapointing existence?  To be taken away to a world of magic, where anything is possible.  Where you're famous, and you're a hero.  Where you learn your parents loved you so much they died for you.   Where you have friends.  That would be an amazing thing, wouldnt it?

So there you have it.  The world of Harry Potter is an ideal, wonderous, adventurous world, created and perfectly suited for the lost dreamers.  The people who think Owl Post is cool and should be used instead instead of the USPS.  :)
