The Overuse of the "R"-Rating

by Jake Sproul

The R rating is being given out too much. It is to the point now that half of the movies are given an R rating. Any film that has "fuck" in it gets R, and now smoking...

I am sick and tired of the "R" rating. The people who rate movies are a bunch of over protective ass-hole "parents" who sit a romm all day. They must be really oblivious to the world. We live in a society where 13 year olds are having babies, and "fuck" is as prevelent in middle school conversations as the word "the." But yet you have to be 17 to see a movie where maybe they say "fuck" once and show some blood or a brief shot of frontal nudity. I am sickend by this.

The people who give out the ratings (after much research, I am still unclear on who exactly does the rating. It may be the MPAA or possibly a group called CARA) are way too uptight! For example The Powerpuff Girls: The Movie (which is a TV show that airs on the Cartoon Network which is aimed at very young children) was given a PG rating for "frantic action"....WHAT THE FUCK?!?! The PG rating is, and I quote, "some material may not be suitable for children." This movie is a cartoon based on a kids show, which kids watch, usually alone, and the film version gets a PG rating?? They make it sound like Bubbles and Buttercup engage in a wild orgy!

The other day I just saw the movie Windtalkers. It is rated R, thus I had to take my dad with me because I am 16. There is nothing in this movie that a 13 year old could not have handled and had not already seen before in different mediums. I believe they said "fuck" twice, and there was some mild gore because it is a war movie.

Now some anti-smoking alphabet soup group is calling for an auto-matic "R" for any movie that shows someone smoking!!! This is ridiculous.
