LACKING ABSOLUTION

by Adrienne

A stranger thing, I swear I have not seen
Than the visions sealing my closed eyes,
Yet if I could discern what they must mean,
Sweet darkness would at last unstorm the skies.
Are these fevered dreamings less than smoke,
Or are they of a substance known to man?
I can still hear the words that last she spoke-
My son, be strong and live. I know you can.
I feel no strength. How can I, with this loss
Embedded in me deeply once again?
How is it that she kept a wooden cross
Above my bed if faith gave her no gain?
If God and Magic have played me false,
Why have I failed to break down these walls?
