~Alan Benedict~

Plot: Shrek is the man. I wish the guy lived in my basement, he’s awesome. I thought this was going to be just another dumb kiddy movie that I could rip apart, but it wasn’t. From start to finish Shrek keeps you interested, and throws in more than a few good laughs along the way. It starts out with Shrek saving a talking donkey who didn’t feel like talking, and when he gets home to his swamp, a bunch of freeloading fairy-tale characters have made theirselves at home. They explain that Lord Forkwad left them no choice. So Shrek decides to take his new tag along donkey and go see this Forkwad. He ends up winning a competion and sent on another quest to rescue a queen for Forkwad. I would tell you what else happens, but I don’t wanna ruin it for ya. Just go see it for yourself.

: Shrek, by far, had better acting that Star Wars: Episode II. The love scene was actually believable (if you can believe that) and it resulted in a far better movie. Shrek was such a lovable ogre, and you really felt bad for the guy at times. And it translates into some really good lessons, not just for the lil ones either. Once in a while the characters would start to sing, and I thought “oh boy here we go, this movie is gonna go downhill fast.” But they ended it quickly, and usually pretty hysterically. The majority of the music was actually really good. Most of the one-liners were great; I only can remember one or two that I didn’t bust a gut on. And the animation was fantastic, characters had freckles, a big step up from old digital animation classics like Toy Story. Right up there with Final Fantasy.
: The opening song, why would they pick that gay song to open up such a great movie. The one they ended on wasn’t bad, but the opening song was pretty lame. Maybe it’s just that I hate smashmouth. Other than that, this movie is pretty flawless.

End: Go out and rent/buy this thing, even if you don’t have any kids. Kids wouldn’t get some of the jokes anyway, but they’d still love it. And so wouldn’t the older kids, unless they’ve pledged their allegiance to Satan and spend days on end in their room with the lights off. I can’t give this any less than 5 stars, it’s really a great movie.
