As most of you probably know by now The Star Wars Trilogy is where Phil's claim to "fame" started.
He was called in to help finish the masks for the Mos Eisley Cantina scene, under supervision of Rick Baker,
when Stuart Freeborn fell ill. He also made the now famous chess game between Chewbacca and the droids.
By Return of the Jedi he was head of ILM's Creature Shop.
Phil on Jabba the Hutt:
"We started off with this design for Jabba which is basically a real
sluggy, wormy creature. And George took a look at it and said: 'No, not that one.
It's too terrible.'
So we went to another version of Jabba.
Which is a much more humanoid sort of thing. Four arms. And he said: 'No, too human.
Try again.'
And we ultimately ended up on this character.
It's very fat, slug-like creature who looks like he needs a lot of assistance from his entourage."
Phil on Jabba's band:
"They're just some whim that George's really pursued and seemed to really be
interested in and has a lot of fun with. Although they occupy one line in the
script that says something like: 'And then the band started up.'"
