White Chicks

Release Date: June 23, 2004 MPAA Rating: PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and some drug content Written and Directed by: Keenan Ivory Wayans Starring: Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Maitland Ward, Anne Dudek, Jaime King, Brittany Daniel, Busy Philipps, Terry Crews, Faune Chambers, Jennifer Carpenter, Jessica Cauffiel, Eddie Velez, Lochlyn Munro
Plot:
After messing up a major drug bust in New York City, two African American FBI agents (who are also brothers), Marcus and Kevin Copeland (Shawn and Marlon Wayans), try to impress their boss by volunteering to protect the Wilton Sisters, Tiffany (Dudek) and Brittany (Ward), the heiresses of a hotel empire, from a kidnapping scheme during a short trip from JFK to the Hamptons. Deciding to change the strategy drastically, the brothers use themselves as bait, wearing lots of pale makeup and dresses to pass as the Wilton sisters, while the real sisters are hidden away, safe from harm. Now, the agents just have to convince the world (including their coworkers who are now protecting *them* and the Wiltons' friends and family) that they're actually young, rich, white heiresses.
Review:
White Chicks is a film that is unnecessary and completely limited in comedy and filmmaking. Intelligence as well is something that this film lacks because it should have never begun with the horrific makeup provided for the Wayans. Of course, the makeup and women's clothing are supposed to look bad on them and of course its intended for comedy, anyone could guess that.
It all comes down to though, is it believable? Not at all. Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans who plays FBI Agents in the film are sent out on a soon to happen kidnapping case and dress up as the Wilton sisters. Not only do they look nothing like the actual girls, but they are taller, stronger and tend to alter in tone of voice. No one, of course notices any difference.
The sex that is female is more aware of changes than the sex that is male. That pops up the question, then why didn't the girls notice. Well, someone can answer with, relax its just a movie. However, why would anyone even begin making a film as such, there is a fine line between believability and stupidity. With this film, the Wayans have dug themselves in deep.
So, instead of bringing the film to a hault, White Chicks strolls around at two hours and delivers a few laughs. Even a huge amount of laughs won't cover up its obvious mistakes, but that, it didn't even have. A comedy is tricky to work well, but a silly comedy with no substance is a failed project from the beginning. This is merely what happens with White Chicks.
Bathroom comedy continues in the movies and somehow, someway, it is effective, but to a certain degree. This is an aspect that certainly gets tiring though. In this case, the Wayans disguised as the Wilton's, release it in the bathroom with characters by the names of Karen, Megan Vandergeld and Heather Vandergeld.

It must be some coincidence, but the actress named Brittany Daniel who plays Megan in the film has starred in Club Dread along with White Chicks. Two of the worst films of the year they are and she had the pleasure of starring in both. Even with that said, there is no sense for good acting in White Chicks because there is hardly any sense at all.
Its sometimes extremely questionable if this film is sane all the time. There has to be some shame after it was edited and place together to hit the theatres. Keenen Ivory Wayans who directed it has nothing worth bragging about. He also wrote the film's script and it has predictable dialogue and scenes that consist of repetitive situations, at times.
If there is something that deserves some attention and interest in White Chicks, then that would be that it ends up bonding a love relationship even stronger than before. However, if there is something to completely look down on in White Chicks, then that would be the fact for it being stereotypical towards race. Everyone is unique and that's what this film fails to realize, a big flaw.
White Chicks is not quite a disaster, but of a very bad film. Either way, its guaranteed to be one of the worst films of the year. There is hardly anything in the film worth both eyeballs of a human being. This film is silly, unnecessary and just painful at times. Its films like White Chicks that makes you wonder where exactly did the budget of the film go. Well, actually, in this case, it went towards makeup and latex. |
