Finding Neverland

Release Date: November 24, 2004
MPAA Rating: PG for mild thematic elements and brief language
Directed by: Marc Forster
Starring: Johnny Depp, Dustin Hoffman, Julie Christie, Kate Winslet, Radha Mitchell, Freddie Highmore

Plot:
Set in London in 1904, the film follows J.M. Barrie's creative journey to bring Peter Pan to life, from his first inspiration for the story up until the play's premiere at the Duke of York's Theatre - a night that will change not only Barrie's own life, but the lives of everyone close to him. David Magee's screenplay is based on the play "The Man Who Was Peter Pan," written by Allen Knee.

Review:
Not a film that features Peter Pan, but a film that is about the author who wrote the classic novels. That author is of course J.M. Barries who is played in this film by Johnny Depp. After the disappointing and average Secret Window, Depp has redeemed himself in acting and in the overall product of the film. This film has a lot of qualities that audiences look for in a film.

Finding Neverland has that sense of entertainment and imagination while still engaging in the reality world if it all. It all begins when Depp's character, Sir James Matthew Barrie meets Sylvia Llewelyn Davies who is played by Kate Winslet. James Barrie has a girlfriend in the film, but becomes good friends with Sylvia Davies which becomes potential love.

Either way, a connection between these two characters is present in the film, from inner issues to happy outer moods. Johnny Depp for one thing seems to always be top notch as far as acting goes. He truly has become one of the most adjustable actors in Hollywood today. By those statements, I mean he can take practically any type of role and make it his own.

Kate Winslet is not far from Depp either. While Depp is the center of attention in Finding Neverland, Kate Winslet who also starred in the wonderful Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind earlier this year, delivers a satisfying and emotional piece of acting. This woman has skills from all types and along with Depp, they both can easily change their accents when a script calls for it.

Finding Neverland is directed by Marc Forster who also directed 2001's Monster's Ball. Once again he has delivered a memorable film with a very strong and entertaining direction. The skills are present when it comes to altering the imagination from the reality. After witnessing Finding Neverland, Marc Forster has certainly become a well established director.

Even though Marc Forster is not well known, his unexpected hits are one of shocking realism and beauty. Finding Neverland, for one thing is a film that might not always be dazzling, but if you insert yourselves into the mind of these characters, then you will definitely see yourself getting caught up with them. This is a very entertaining film that calls for your full attention.

If one is expecting a film much like Peter Pan, then they are going to be somewhat disappointed. Peter Pan plays a minor part in the taking of this movie, but the main attraction is J.M. Barrie, the man who wrote the books and of course the people that changed his life for the better. This man love to love and loved to write and his talents are clearly seen in this film.

Finding Neverland is a magical film that also fills your heart with emotion. While we all enjoy our happy times and hope that our emotions don't become a depression, we cannot control what happens in the future. However, what Finding Neverland does point out is that you may think loved ones that have passed away are not with you, but with a little bit of imagination, they will always forever be with you.
