As human beings I'm sure at least once in our lives we will experience love. We will all come across that man or that woman and know that it would only be right to spend the rest of your life with them. The human race kneels down for love, but some fall out of love and when that happens betrayal begins. Closer explains everything in that nature and how its tough for an individual to stick to loyalty.
Loyalty is a tough job to take as a couple and this film is far from being loyal. It gives the audience the sense of affairs that are continuously occurring as every single day goes by. Divorces are currently occurring more than ever, its easily at its highest rate. As human beings or as animals, in a relationship, both individuals want sex, they want to know that the other is theirs and they want something to look forward to everyday.
All individuals have their needs as we witness in Closer. Sex being a very important one, but the main one would be attention and of course love. Secretly one can be together with a person, but deep inside not far from the small world that we live in, they actually like someone else. Cheating is a painful part of a relationship for the other person and sometimes it actually seems natural.
In Closer there are two American actors, Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman and there are two English actors, Jude Law and Clive Owen. This film has one of the most impressive casts of this entire year. It also features stunning performances by Clive Owen and Natalie Portman. Both of these actors have given breakthrough performances and both should deeply be considered for an oscar nomination.
Its great to see up and coming stars receive solid roles and now if only the media would make it public. Julia Roberts and Jude Law, on the other hand, who are pretty well established give solid performances as well and might sneak their way in perhaps the Golden Globes. However, it was phenomenal to see underrated actors Clive Owen and underrated actress Natalie Portman deliver the best performances of their career to date.
As I was watching Closer, I noticed how graphic in sexual dialogue it was and how unshameful the film was in delivering such words. This is how a lot of love and romance films should be. I see nothing to hold back or hide from a relationship. While some couples are more conservatives than others, the relationships that occur in Closer are very open and this is one of the few films I have seen that are this forward.
One scene in particular deepens itself within the world of the internet. Many go to the internet for information, others go to talk to their friends, but others go for sex talks and meetings with strangers. This is something that is explored with very sexual terms in Closer. Granted, this may make some audiences feel uncomfortable, but if one cannot face the facts than don't bother living in the reality.
At times, Closer, feels like a mess going back and forth between these four characters. However, if one takes the time to look back into their past relationships, I'm sure you will notice that for at least one second, a thought came into your head to return to your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend. Closer is a film about honesty and about who can top the other man or other woman. Love is a challenge and attention is demanded.
This isn't a complicated film, for all that its worth. It definitely demands the viewers attention all throughout its running time though. With Closer's wonderful screenplay which was written by Patrick Marber, this film delivers some of the most interesting dialogue your ears will hear all year. This film is always interesting and with Mike Nichols
in the director chair, the direction is to let the characters own the screen and then it will all come out effortlessly.
Closer is a very passionate film, filled with not only love, but romance and a unique connection between regular characters. This is one of those rare films that come very unexpectedly and end up delivering more than you expected. If everyone looks at this film just a bit Closer, than I'm sure they will notice the honest messages that are being told here.
