Matt Damon is once again Jason Bourne in the sequel to 2002's The Bourne Identity. This time Jason Bourne is framed for a botched CIA operation and he is forced to take up his former life as a trained assassin to survive. One things for sure, The Bourne Supremacy is a more intense sequel than the original and it hardly stops at any costs for a moment of relaxation.
The fact that this film is packed with action and its direction is fast paced, doesn't necessarily make it a bad film because The Bourne Supremacy is actually a decent film. However, the detective work and the danger situations seen in the previous film is lacking a bit in Supremacy. For starters, the reason is obviously in the change of directors. Paul Greengrass has a more entertaining direction, but not a more creative one.
If we take a look at the screenplay of The Bourne Supremacy, its difficult to find powerful dialogue. The film is occupied in a rushed way that on occasion there is interesting dialogue, but the percentage of it falls short, actually way short from its style and pace. One can say that Paul Greengrass provided more of a mainstream spy film, and that he did.
Greengrass is not a well known director and while his style isn't good for top quality spy films, he definitely has an eye for letting the actors grace the screen. Matt Damon in this film gives a solid performance and should only get even more recognition of this character that is Jason Bourne. Many could easily doubt Matt Damon as an actor fit for thrillers, but surprises are meant to come along every so often.
A couple of actors from the supporting cast in the first film are back in the sequel. Julia Stiles, for that matter, has a rather small role again and a rather average performance. When it comes to this film, the only performance that stands out is Matt Damon's of course. Focused like no one can be and always deep within his character, Matt Damon and the situations he falls into to survive is quite a blast.
Producers are without a doubt looking to make even a third part to this soon to be trilogy. Perhaps even a series in the future, but I highly doubt that. A third part should be a worthy conclusion to this series and Jason Bourne. Both films had their instances in which it stands out. When it comes to both The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, these films are good, but they are missing greatness.
While action films are slowly becoming more and more of the same, this film separates itself and takes a different route. The effort made in this film is one to be appreciated and there are some solid fight scenes, some good car chases and everything else you'd want in a spy thriller. The Bourne Supremacy is a film that has no boundaries, but it is definitely not a mess.
The Bourne Supremacy's direction is solid and its one of the more intense action films in some time. While the film is lacking dialogue and a more complicated story, it still offer plenty of thrills. Matt Damon is top-notch in this film and it proves that for an American he makes a rather solid Secret Agent. Take The Bourne Supremacy for the simplistic that it is and you will be in one solid ride all the way through.
