"Jonathon?"
"Yes Evy?"
"Where are we?"
"I don't know."
Two voices sounded in the darkness. They were one of Evy O'Connel, and the other of her brother, Jonathon Carnahan,
"Well find your light and flip it on." Evy ordered.
"If I found it. won't you think I done that already? Oh yes. Here it is."
After a clicking of a switch, the room wasn't dark anymore. Evy and Jonathon adjusted their eyes to the sudden brightness and found themselves in a room with old dusty filing cabinets and heeps of god-knows-what covered in pure dust.
"Do you realize we're standing in a room that no one has entered in over thirty years?"
"I wonder what dad had in these filing cabinets." Jonathon said walking over to one. He blew off the dust creating a cloud. He openned the first drawer, and pulled out a file to read it. "My God! Evy! Come see this." Evy ran over to look over her brothers shoulder.
"It looks like journals. From all his old adventures." She reached in and pulled out another one. "Hundreds of them." She put it back and bent down to the very bottom and took at the lat file to read.
"I didn't know dad did all this."
Evy read more of the one she was holding. "Listen to this...
'Jonathon turned two yesterday. Soon he will be big enough to accompany us. Soon being another seven years or so. Malla is as big as a house now. I'm guessing the baby will be born within the month. She has a feeling its a girl. I, on the other hand, want another strong baby boy, but the mothers instincts are usually correct. Tomorrow I'm heading off to the pyramids. I don't want to leave everyone behind, especially this far in her pregnancy, but they are about to uncover something big. I wish I can take Malla with me. She loves going there. Lately, she's been having a desire to go to Thebes. She thinks it has something to the baby. I won't let her though.'
Look at the date, Jonathon. I think this was his last entry."
"I wonder what that big thing was."
"Well whatever it was, it stopped him from exploring again." Evy put back the file in its place. "What are we going to do with all these?"
"Keep them here I guess."
A new voice sounded from behing them. "Found another room I see?"
"Hey hunny." Evy called to him.
Rick, Evy's husband walked slowly over to Jonathon and Evy. "What's in there?" He said pointing to the filing cabinet after giviing Evy a kiss."
"Files." Evy smiled.
"Well I see that." Rick responded sarcastically back.
"They're all our father's. From all his digs and his whole life."
"Interesting.. but we have to read them later. Right now Alex has gotten himself into a little predicament."
"Oh no. Wht did he do now?"
"Nothing big." Evy shot him a look. "He climbed that tree out back. And now he can't get down."
"Oh dear! Is he okay?"
"Evy. He's an eleven year old boy. He's having the time of his life up there."
"How are we going to get him down?" She saw the expression on Rick's face. "Oh No! no no no! I will not!"
"Oh come one Evy. You used to love climbing that tree." Jonathon urged her.
"Things change. I'm older now."
"You are the only one who can show him how to get down."
Evy looked back and forth at Rick and Jonathon. "Okay.. Fine." She walked passed them without looking at them them again.
Rick and Jonathon exchanged glances laughing at her.
Evy stepped out the back door to find just what she had expected. Alex on the top limb of the huge tree in the back yard. "Hi Mom!" Alex smiled.
"Alex get down from there!" She had to say that before she went up. She knew the chances of it happenning weren't very good.
"I can't I don't know how."
"Well why did you go up there in the first place?"
"It's a tree. I had to climb it." Evy sighed and walked over to the tree taking a branch and pulling herself up. "I think you should get dad to do this."
"Why? You don't think your mother can climb a tree?"
"Well...."
"Hush your mouth before I just let you stay up there." She was now standing on the first branch. She looked up. "Not as high as I expected." She said to herself. "If I take that branch. I can make those few like a ladder and I can see what happenns when I get there"
"You aren't really coming up here are you?" Alex aked seriously.
"I have you know that you mother here was the number one tree climber when she was your age." Jonathon said from behind them. Evy jumped at the sound of his voice.
"Jonathon. you could have made me fall."
"Really mom? You?"
"Yes.. me." She then hear Rick laughing from behind her. Sheturned around. "You go inside right now!" She scolded.
"No I think I'll watch you."
Evy knew there was nothing she could do. "Fine."
"It's an art really. You have to see her do this. I was always jealous." Jonathon told Rick.
And Rick watched. Evy was making like a monkey. She was now fifteen feet higher.
As Evy took the branch where Alex was sitting, she did what she thouht was completely harmless. She looked down. "Oh damn." She said as a reflex.
"Mom!" Alex said in surprise.
Evy looked back down at Rick who she thought was going to fall on the floor because he was laughing so hard. She rolled her eyes. "Alex, take your foot. and place it right here." Alex did as she requested. "Now push yourself out and stand up." Again he responded. "Good. Now watch where I put my hands and feet and you do the same." Carefully as they could they made their way down the tree unti their feet were safely on the ground. "Now back in the house. All three of you. Alex, wash up for supper."
"Yes mom."
She passed Rick walking to the door. "I never pictured you could climb trees."
"Yes well. It was something I did along time ago. Forgotten now."
Rick saw her seriousness, and his smile changed. "Fine." He put his hands up in defense. "Forgotten." He saw her look down to the ground. "Hey.." He pulled her head back up with his two hands. "I'm sorry I was just having a little fun. I didn't know it would bother you so much."
"Well It does."
Before she could say more, he put his finger in front of her mouth. "Shh." He then kissed her. "Sorry." he said as he pulled away from her lips.
Evy saw Ricks goofy puppy dog face, and couldn't help but laugh. "Get inside." She ordered.
"Yes ma'am."
So they ate supper with no words about the tree climbing experience.
"So how many more rooms do you think we'll find tomorrow?" Jonathon asked as he was taking a bite.
"I'm not sure.." Evy replied. "..I never thought think house was so big growing up in it. I want to read some more of those journals tomorrow."
"Evy I don't think that is such a good idea." Rick broke into their conversation.
"Why not?" Evy asked.
"Just a feeling."
"Well feeling or not, their just files. What harm could be done with reading somee files?" Rick went to reply but Evy stopped him. "Don't even start."
---
That night Evy was tossing and turning in her sleep. Rick lay awake trying understand her mumbles. He didn't succeed. Finally, he shook her out of it. She layed there confused. "You were having some dream there." He whispered.
Evy didn't say anything She just turned around and went straight back to sleep.
--
"Are you going to sleep all day?" Alex's voice rang in Evy's ears. "Mom. It's nooon. Get up." Evy openned her eyes to find Alex standing over her. "Sorry. Dad said to let you sleep, but that was two hours ago. He and Jonathon went to the store. I'm bored."
"What?" Evy was slowly waking herself up trying to take everything in.
"Dad..and..Jonathon..went.. to..the..store..and..."
"Okay enough I hear you now. I'm up." She started rising herself, but a wave of dizziness went through her head so she had to lay herself back down.
"Mom. what's wrong?"
"I don't know." She sighed. "I'll be up later. Go play outside."
"Okay." He jumped off the bed and ran out the bedroom door.
"Stay away from that tree!" She yelled just before the back door slammed shut. She shut her eyes and tried to picture the last bit of her dream. The one she had all night. Someone was reaching up to her. A girl. "No no no.. It's time to get up now." She interupted herself. She didn't want to bring back anymore horrible memories. She got up, and instead of getting dressed, she felt lazy so she put on a robe over her nighty. She stood infront of the mirror staring at herself. How old she looked. "Where did those bags under my eyes come from."
"Mom!!!"
Evy jumped at Alex's yell. She ran out the back door to find not a single sign of him. She even looked up in the tree. "Alex!" No answer. "ALEX!!!!" Her heart was beating fast. "Alex you answer me this instant!"
"Relax mom I'm right here." He anwered from behind her.
"Why did you yell?"
"Dad and Jonathon were home. I didn't mean to scare you."
Evy let out a sigh. "It's fine get inside." Alex walked in and Evy behind him. She followed him into the livingroom.
"Well look who's finally awake." Rick commented before giving his wife a hello kiss and hug.
"Why did you let me sleep?"
"It looked as though you were having a rough night. You sould use a sleep in. So what were you dreaming about. Care to share now."
Evy closed her eyes picturing the girl again. She was mouthing something. 'get me up. please.' She shook herself out of the dream. "No. It was just a dream. Nothing special. I'm going to get dressed." She changed the subject, and walked out the room.
"You think she's lyin?" Rick asked Jonathon.
"Oh yes."
Rick nodded and left the room following her into the bedroom. There she found Evy, still in her bath robe, sitting on the bed with her face buried in her hands. He sat down next to her. "What's going on?"
She looked up. Rick could tell she was in deep thought. "Have you ever forgotten something, like an event, and then all of a sudden you're remembering again?"
"No, but I've heard of it. People forget tramatic experiences all the time. They repress it, because they don't want to think about it."
"Well I think this is happenning now... to me."
"Why? What are you remembering?"
"I don't know little things. I don't know. I think I'm just going crazy."
"Well if it starts coming back, just tell me okay. I'm going to listen to your crazy dreams this time."
Evy smiled at his assurance. "Okay." She said. She kissed him slowly and then stood up to get dressed. "I want to look into those files more." She knew Rick would disagree, so she said it as bravely as possible.
"Well, whatever you find. I hope its interesting."
"Okay. That was way to easy. Why did you say yes?"
"Well, like you said. What harm could be done? They're just files."
"No I don't belive you. Why don't you think I should look at them?"
"Well certain things should remain a secret. I think your father kept them locked in that room for a reason."
"Well my father died thirteen years ago. Whatever is in there happenned along time ago. Long forgotton."
"You keep on using that word."
"What?"
"Forgotton."
"Oh.. ok so?"
"Never mind. Have fun with those files."
"Thanks! I will" She smiled kissed him that left the room.
Rick sighed and fell back onto the bed.
Outside the bedroom, Evy was walking into the den where Jonathon and Alex were sitting and talking.
"So I punched the guy in the face, wham! He deserved it."
"That's really great, Uncle Jon, but I don't think you should have picked his pocket to begin with."
"Did your uncle tell you that the man punched him first?" Evy spoke from the doorway.
"No I kinda skipped that part. Thanks for ruining my moment."
"Anytime. I just came to tell you that I'm going to go through dad's journals. You want to join?"
"Nah you go on ahead without me."
Evy smiled and left the doorway. She walked down the hall into the door of the filing room. She went to the the filing cabinet next to the one they looked at the previous day. She openned the first drawer and pulled out the first file and read it to herself.
'I'm starting out where my husband left off. He wouldn't explain why he stopped writing. Something about his last dig. Our baby girl was born last week. Evy Carnahan. There is something about her. I
can't explain it. She is a princess. I wish I knew what lay behind those eyes.'
Evy put back the file and pulled one out from a middle drawer.
'Amy's been in the hospital for three weeks now. Evy hasn't forgiven herself yet. I don't think she ever will. It looks like she is never going to wake up.'
"Amy? who's that? What happenned?" She put back that file and pulled out one before it.
'There was a terrible accident yesterday. Evy and her best friend, Amy, were climbing the tree out back. Amy slipped and fell straight on her head. They took her in the hospital. Evy hasn't stopped crying.'
Evy dropped the file on the ground, and fell to her knees. She felt as though something was creating a tornado in her head. More waves of images flowed through. She got up and ran to the den. "Jonathon!!!" She yelled frantically.
Jonathon stood up and ran to the hysterical Evy who was now crying. "Evy, what's going on? What's wrong?"
"What happenned to AMY?!?" Evy yelled.
"Wha- Who's Am-- Ohhh."
"Jonathon!"
"We thought you'd forgotten. You had no clue what we were talking about when the subject was broug--"
"Jonathon!"
"Evy I think you need to sit down." He led her over to the couch.
"What's going on? What's all this yelling about?" Rick ran in the room. When he saw Evy crying on the couch he ran over to her.
"Get away from me!" She yelled hysterically.
Rick backed off and looked at Jonathon for answers and then to Alex who was equally as confused.
"Evy. listen to me. It was along time ago. You were 14. There was an accident."
"Yes I know that much. What happenned to her?" Evy was nnow a bit calmer and more easier to talk to.
"You two were outside, and I was inside helping mom with the dishes. Next thing we heard was a scream and a yell. We ran out and saw Amy lying on the ground not moving. You were up on the top limb shaking. We couldn't get you down until the ambulance came and took her away. We visited her in the hospital from time to time. The doctors said she had a broken neck, but it blocked some sort of blood tube to the brain. Evy.." Jonathon swallowed wondering how he was going to frase the next sentence. "..Amy never got out of that hospital. She wasn't expected to."
"It was my fault." Evy said suddenly without emotions. "I couldn't catch her when she fell." She closed her eyes. The whole memory had now returned.
"It wasn't your fault, Evy. It was something that happenned. We tried to tell you, but you wouldn't listen." The whole time Jonathon was talking, Rick slowly was inching his way toward his wife. He carefully took her hand into his, and was relieved that she held on. "One day you woke up happy. We never wanted you not to be, but everytime we mentioned Amy, you would ask who?"
"That night.. I remember. I was crying into my pillow waiting for myself to fall asleep. I looked up. In front of my bed stood Amy. I couldn't believe it. She told me not to worry. And I went to bed, when I woke up I wasn't worried any more. I guess I made myslef forget. Do Amy's parents still live in the neighborhood?"
"I-I dunno, Evy. They still lived there when mom and dad died. I don't see why they still wouldn't be there."
"I have to go visit them. I will. I'm leaving now." She stood up from the couch and unlocked Rick's grasp. She walked out of the room and out of the house. Out on the road she tried to remember which direction to go. After a moment she decided to go right. She walked down the road a little way passing about ten houses until she reaches a blue one with white trim. She walked up to it and knocked on the door. The door openned revelaing a woman in her mid sixties. She took off her glasses examinning Evy.
"Can I help you?"
"Mrs. Harold?"
"Yes. What can I do for you?"
"Mrs. Harold. My name is Evy. Evy O'Connel. Well Carnahan back in the day. I don't know if you remember me, but I--"
"Evy? Of course I remember you! How have you been? I haven't seen you since- well not for a while. Come inside."
"Thankyou."
"It's so good to see you! My have you grown into a presentable young woman. So tell me about yourself. Who's this Mr. O'Connel of yours?" Evy laughed. "Well come now! Do tell! I want to hear all about him."
They walked over to the sofa sitting in front of the big window and sat down. "Well his name is Rick. Have an eleven year old son name Alex."
"Oh boy. Little Evy Carnahan. Married with a kid. I never would have guessed it. Do you want some tea?"
"That would be lovely. Thankyou." Mrs. Harold stood up from the sofa. "I'll be just a minute." And, in just a minute she came out from the kitchen with two cups of hot tea. "So what brings you about this neighborhood?"
"Well Jonathon and I finally decided to come back home and see the old house again. We're thinking about puting it up for sale. Since it is never used."
"Oh really? That's sad."
"Yeh, but its something that needs to be done."
"Where's Mr. Harold?" Evy said changing the subject.
"Oh Mr. Harold passed on a few years ago."
"Oh I'm so sorry."
"Don't be. He was old and lived a long life. Well I'm glad you're home dear. Especially now. Amy's coming home in a few days. It would be good to see you two again."
"Amy?"
"Yeh."
"She's alive??"
Mrs. Harold looked at her strangely. "Evy, dear. Are you feeling okay?"
"Yes I'm fine." But she was lying. She felt the beads of falling down her forehead. "Mrs. Harold. It was great to see you again. I have to get going home."
"It's a shame you have to leave so quickly. Come back and visit again. When Amy comes home I'll send her over, okay?"
"Yes. Umm no. please don't I mean it's fine. Um I have to go. Thankyou for having me over." She backed off and ran out of the house. "Amy's alive? I'm so confused." She walked slowly back home wanting to run, but her fast-paced thoughts made up for it. She walked into the door and past everyone without saying a word and straight into the bedroom. She shut the door locking it so no one could come in, not even Rick. Not to her surprise at all, ten seconds later the door handle jiggled.
"Evelyn. It's me open up." Rick's voice sounded through the door.
"Go.. away." She responded in a menacing voice.
"Are you okay?"
"Rick, get the HELL away from me!"
Rick didn't respond. She just heard his footsteps walk away from the door. She picked up the lamp on the night stand and threw it on the ground creating an enormous crash sending peices of it everywhere. She flew herself on the bed and covered her face with her hands. Ten seconds later there was a knock on the door. She wasn't going to answer it.
"Evy?" Jonathon was nervous about his sister's reaction, but he knew that something had to be wrong after that crash he heard from the den. He had to know if she was physically hurt or not. Rick refused to go another step near the bedroom door, so he took over the job. "Evy. What was that crash?"
"Jonathon, please. just.. don't talk."
"Evy. Open this door." He demanded. Evy sighed and got up from the bed. Jonathon was the last person she wanted to fight with. She openned the door. "There that wasn't so bad.. was it?" They both sat down on the bed.
"Jonathon. Tell me more about Amy."
"Okay. umm.. let's see. You two were in the same class. You fought over different boys every weekend..... You did everything together."
"What happenned after the accident. To both of us."
"Well you went into a hate everything and everybody mode. You stayed locked in your room all day."
"What happenned to Amy?"
"She went to the hospital."
"You said she never got out."
"Yeh."
"How did you know this?"
"Well, when there's a death in this small neighborhood, you tend to hear it from every direction."
"Jonathon. Mrs. Harold said Amy is still alive."
"What?"
"Yes."
"Mrs. Harold is pretty messed up in the head. You remember that."
Evy lowered her head. "Oh yeh."
"Are you okay?" Evy nodded her head. "Do you want your husband to come in? He's been waiting by the door trying to stay out of site."
Evy looked up at the doorway, and sure enough Rick was standing there smiling the smile where it's asking if it's okay to smile. "I really just want to be alone right now. I just so terribly confused." Rick turned and left the doorway. Evy knew that she was hurting him, but she also knew that he would understand later. Jonathon got up without saying a word and left the room closing the door behind him. Through the vent in the wall she could hear their conversation in the den.
"Dad. Is mom okay?"
"Yes she's fine. Right Jonathon?"
"Of course. Hey Alex can you go out side for a second so your dad and I can talk."
"Yeh, but if you're gonna talk about mom. I want to know."
"Your mother's fine now go outside."
"Okay dad. C-ya."
"She is okay right?"
"When her friend died it tore her up completely. She showing those same signs again."
"Why do I feel like there is a peice missing from this big giant puzzle?"
"Because there is."
"And that would be..."
"There is reason to believe that Amy is still alive."
"What? How."
"When Evy locked herself in her room. The whole neighrborhood got kinda scared of us. No body wanted to talk. Not even the Harolds. I think they told us, Amy was dead to keep us from talking to them."
"What? What a mixed up bunch of crazy people."
"Not really. Evy was really wild then. I don't blame them."
"Why was Evy like that?"
"She thought it was her fault that Amy got hurt."
"But that is extreme behavior for feeling guilty." There was no talking for a few moments. "Jonathon?"
"I ... might ... have had something to do with it."
"Oh no what did you do?"
"Well Amy and I were.. Well Amy was my.. She and I were in love, and I blamed Evy for the accident. I was so angry at her. I didn't mean to. I was only sixteen years old."
"Oh my God Jonathon. .. Well you're right it was along time ago."
"Do you think we should tell Evy?"
"I don't know. I think we should just get out of town. This isn't healthy for her."
At this time Evy couldn't take listenning anymore. She was now bawling. "How could Jonathon do that to me? How could he not tell me?" She picked up the vase next to her and threw it down on the ground.
From the den Jonathon and Rick looked toward the hallway. "She's losing it again." He said with fear in his voice.
"Jonathon? What's going on inside her head."
"I don't know. No one did. I think she's safe in her room locked up."
"Locked up? Jonathon. You're talking about her like she's a wild animal. She's my wife! The mother of my child and YOUR sister for God sake!"
Jonathon just stared at him blankly. "I'm going to find a padlock." He walked out of the room.
"Jesus Christ!" Rick flew his hands up over his head. He didn't know whether to go see how Evy was doing or sit down on the couch and think. He decided to do plan B. Jonathon's words were getting to him. After a few moments on the couch, a figure in the corner of his eye made him look up. It was Evy. She had a sexy smile on her face and was walking slowly towards him.
"Hello." She said with an erotic tone in her voice. Any other time Rick would be more than happy to hear it, but this was freaking him out. Evy walked slowly over to the couch and sat down on his lap brushing her fingers through his hair.
"Evy? .... What's going on?" He was suspicious of her actions. He took one of her hands, while the other one smacked him accross the face.
"How DARE you talk about me behind my back." She snapped. She smacked him again. Before the third, Rick grabbed her hand. Now he had both hands in his.
"Evy.." He smiled nervously. Evy kneed him in the face, cut loose from his grip and ran back to her room.
Rick was now left holding his face. He hate to admit it to himself, but it hurt. At least he taught her well. Jonathon came walking in without noticing Rick was hurt. "I found a pad lock. I'm sorry chap, but it's worth it."
Rick looked up from his hands. His nose was slightly bloody. He just smiled and nodded. "I believe you."
Jonathon couldn't help but laugh.Rick gave him a look. "Right.. I'll be on my way then." As he exited the den, he let out a short laughter then caught himself, because he knew Rick was probably listenning.
From the den Rick heard Jonathon laughing, but thought no ill of it. He was terrified of his wife. Not of her actions towards others, but of what she was doing to herself. He had never seen her like this. He was half way to the kitchen to wash his bloddy nose when a single gun shot was heard, and it came from the hallway. Evy's bedroom. He stopped in his tracks and closed his eyes hoping that no one was hurt. He turned around and ran toward the hallway. His first site was Jonathon lying n the ground in front of the closed door. "Oh God no!" He cried. He ran to Jonathon who was unconscious with blood coming from his stomach. He scooped him up and ran back towards the den and placed him on the couch. He felt for a pulse. Nothing. "Oh Jonathon don't die on me come on. Oh God." Tears streamed down his face. "What has Evy done?" He sat down in front of Jonathon's body. Again, he buried his face in his hands. The sound of coughing caught his ear. He swung himself around to find Jonathon holding his stomach wincing in pain. Rick's first reflex was grabbing his head and kissing it on the forehead. "You're alive!!!"
Jonathon openned his eyes to find Rick's overly smiling face in front of him. It frightenned him a slight bit. "Of course I'm alive." He said with pain in his voice. He plopped his head back on the pillow.
"What are we going to do about Evy?"
Before Jonathon could answer there was a knock on the door. The two men exchanged glances. With their eyes, they decided hat it should be answered. Rick stood up and walked out of the den into the livingroom, and openned the door. In the doorway stood a tall slender blonde haired woman who looked nervous.
"Hello. Um.. My name is Amy." Rick just stared at her with a wide eyes and a gaping mouth. From the den, Jonathon's ears perked up at the sound of her same chipmunk voice and her name. "Umm hello?" She waved her hand in front of his face trying to snap him back into reality.
"Hi. Can I help you?" Rick said the first words that popped in his head.
"My mother told me to come to this house. I'm not sure exactly why. I just arrived home today, and
that was the first thing she told me. She was very urgent about it."
"Um. b.. um." Rick was stumbling on his words. He didn't know what to say.
"Hello Amy." Jonathon's voice sounded from behind him. He turned around and saw Jonathon stumbling towards them. He turned back to Amy who was frightenned by the blood, and examining the familiarosity of the man. "Amy there's no time to talk." Jonathon was now walking without a stumble. There was no time now to focus on his pain. He walked up and took Amy's hand leading her into the house. He missed that hand. "We need your help. Desperately."
Amy was still examining him. "I'm sorry I think you got the wrong person. I don't even know you people."
"Amy listen to me." Rick chimed him. He then stopped wondering what he was going to say next. He looked toward Jonathon. "Or better yet, listen to him."
"Amy..."
"Why do you keep saying my name, like you know me?" She let go of his hand. She was now frightenned. She ran towards the door, but Rick stood infront of it, blocking her from leaving.
"BECAUSE WE DO KNOW YOU!" Jonathon screamed very angrily, which even frightenned Rick. His stomach bit back at his anger. He bent over holding it.
Amy was now crying. "You're a bunch of psychos."
"Amy..." Jonathon whispered. Talking was too much.
"Let me out of here." She demanded.
"Would you just give us a chance to talk to you?" Rick pleaded.
Amy sighed giving up. "Fine." She couldn't hold her ground anymore. "Talk." She put her hands on her hips.
Jonathon took a deep breath. "Listen. Along time ago.. you fell off a tree." Amy looked at him perplexed. "Right here in out back yard." Amy's look changed from perplexed to shocked. She started breathing hard.
"Jonathon." She said to herself figuring out who was talking to her. "Evy."
"Yes." Jonathon assured. He sighed with relief.
"What's going on?" She asked now nervous that she was standing in front of Jonathon.
Jonathon now became embarrassed of the situation. He was toungue tied. "Uhh."
"Evy is my wife." Rick stepped in. "Yesterday, she climbed the tree out back. It send some back memories or something that she had forgotten. Well.. she snapped."
"Did she do that?" Amy asked pointing to Jonathon. Jonathon nodded. "Oh my God!" She ran to Jonathon, puting her arm around him. "You need to sit down." She led him back to the den. She seemed to know where she was going. She layed him down on the couch. She sat towards the end and laid Jonathon's head on her lap. Rick sat in the chair opposite of them both. There was an awkard silence between the three of them. Amy was stroking Jon's hair. It felt natural for her to do that.
"I thought you were dead." Jonathon finally said. "I mean, I thought you were still alive, but I thought you were dead." He knew that his words didn't make sense. It made sense to him and that was the important part.
"I was." She said. "I came back. They took me out of town afterwards. I haven't been back home since today."
"I'm sorry to drag you into all this." Rick said.
"It's quite alright."
"It's good to see you again." Jonathon said. Amy just smiled, but didn't say anything which made him feel like a fool for saying it.
"So, what are we gonna do about my wife?" Rick finally spoke up about the subject.
"I really don't know what to say Mr...?"
"O'Connel, but call me Rick."
"Okay Rick."
"Listen.. Evy said you came to her along time ago."
Amy thought back. The memories were all jumbled in her head. "Yes I did. The night before I was to leave, I snuck out of my house to visit Evy. I told her not to worry anymore."
"Well it worked, because she woke up not remembering a single thing that happenned." Jonathon said.
"She repressed the memory. The trama was too much for her." Rick pointed out.
"And now all the memories just flourished back to her, and she's losing her mind."
Another crash came from the room. "I can see." Amy said. "Maybe I can go talk to her."
"Becareful.." Rick said.
"No!" Jonathon shot up from Amy's lap, grabbing her hand. "It's too dangerous."
"Dangerous?" asked Amy. "What could she possibly do?" When she looked down at Jonathon's wound, and heard another crash coming from the hallway, it finally hit her. "Oh."
"Can you talk to her though?" Rick pleaded. "She won't listen to us."
"I can try. What do I say? Hi I'm your dead friend all grown up now. calm down?"
"Basically." Rick said.
"I don't want you to get hurt." Jonathon held up her hand and kissed it.
"Don't worry." She said kissing his. She gave him a long hug, stood up and walked out the doorway towards the hallway. She looked back to both of them. "Don't worry.' She mouthed talking mostly to Jonathon.
Jonathon stood up really fast. "Wait!" He said. He ran up to her giving her a long kiss. "Sorry. I just had to do that."
Amy smiled. "It's okay." She kissed him softy and quickly, turned around and started walking.
"I love you." Jonathon said. All Amy did was turn around and smile again. She turned back and walked down the hallway.
"Now which door is it?" She asked herself. Another crash came from the right door at the end. "I'm guessing that one." She walked up to it and knocked on the door softly.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT?!" An angry voice came from inside.
"Evy?" Amy said softly. She openned the door slowly allowing herself in. She saw everything scattered everywhere. And broken peices of everything on the floor. "Evy?" She said softly again. Suddenly she heard barbaric yelling from behind her. She turned around to find a woman with wild black hair running towards her from behind the open door. She stepped out of the way and pushed her onto the bed. She turned and closed the door. "What in heavens happenned to you?" She asked. Evy just stared at her from the bed. She grunted. "Really how interesting."
"Who are you?!" Evy yelled.
"Evy.. It's me Amy."
Evy just looked at her some more. She shook her head. "No. No. That is one cruel joke. Who are you?"
"Evy. Look at my face." She pointed to her face and Evy stared at her. Amy saw her expression change.
"No. You're dead."
"How can I be when I'm right here?"
"I don't know either."
"Evy.." Amy sat down on the bed next to her. She knew it was a dangerous move, but she felt pretty safe somehow. "What's going on with you?"
Evy looked down to the ground. "I don't know."
"Of course you do. Otherwise you wouldn't be doing it."
Evy was now dumbfounded. She had no idea why she was acting out so. "Oh my God. What am I doing?"
"Why are you so angry?"
"Jonathon. Jonathon was so angry. I knew what I did was wrong. I felt horrible. He just made it worse. I felt so guilty." Evy was now talking a million words a mile.
"That was a long time ago. We were kids back then. You know that Jon and I were close. You'd expect him to get somewhat angry. He got over it, and knowing him he feels horrible about it."
"Oh my God! Jonathon!! Is he okay?" Evy now remembering what she did. "Oh my God! What have I done."
"Relax. Jonathon's fine." She smiled. "Jonathon's just fine." Meaning so much more in her head.
"Good." She breathed a sigh of relief. Then she looked at Amy more. "What happenned to you?" She said now realizing it was actually Amy.
"They made me leave town. I wasn't 'safe'. You know my parents were crazy. I went to stay with my cousins in South Africa. Boy that was an experience."
"I bet it was." Evy laughed.
"So it looks like you're all better now.
"I guess so. How can I face them?" She asked.
"They're your family, Evy. They're so worried about you."
"Do you think I should go out there?"
Amy nodded. "Uh-huh."
Evy smiled. "Oh my Godddd!" She laughed giddaly. "It's so good to see you!" She gave Amy a hug.
"Like wise." Amy laughed. "I missed you so much."
"Well, I honestly can't say the same, because I kinda didn't know who you were."
Amy laughed. "Get out to you're family."
"Ok." Evy psyched herself up. She stood up from the bed and walked towards the door, openning it. Amy got up right after. Evy walked slowly down the hall nervous with each step. She got to the end and turned standing in the doorway of the den. She first saw Jonathon lying on the sofa with his eyes closed holding his bloody stomach, then Rick sitting in the chair with his head in his hands. She walked to Jonathon first. Very quietly. Jonathon sensed someone was standing before him and he openned his eyes. With great fear, they openned widely. Evy shook her head saying not to be afraid. "I'm sorry." She mouthed.
"Not a problem it happens all the time really." He whispered. Smiling for assurance.
Evy crouched down beside him. "We have to get you to a doctor." She said very quietly. "Oh my what have I done?"
"You weren't you, Evy. You didn't do a thing."
Rick heard quiet voices so he lifted his head. His first reaction was fearful shock. "Hi." Evy said aloud noticing he was looking at her, almost bringing herself to a cry.
Rick stood up from his chair. "Hi." He said.
Evy let out a cry and ran towards him sinking into his arms. "I'm so sorry." she cried.
"Shhh. It's all over now." He stroked her hair. He was still angry at her for being like she was, but he felt he had to get over it. Amy walked into the room from the doorway. "Thankyou so much." Rick said to her. Amy didn't say anything back, she just nodded her head.
Jonathon stood up and walked towards her. They gave eachother a quick long kiss. Amy pulled back from it. "Listen. Jonathon.."
"No. don't say anything please." Jonathon stopped her.
"I have to."
Jonathon nodded knowing full well of the rejection coming next. "Ok."
"Listen. Jonathon I really love you." She said. Jonathon's ears perked up, but he knew there was a 'but' coming. "You have to believe me. I love you so much. I'm in love with you." She was almost crying. "But.." Oh there it is, Jonathon thought. "I can't stay here."
"Where ever you go, I'll go with you."
"No!" She said loudly. "I mean. you can't. It's impossible." Jonathon hung his head low. She brought it back up with her finger. She gave him one last passionate kiss. "I have to get going." She said. She looked over to Evy and Rick. "Forgive her." She told Rick. Rick just nodded. "I mean it."
"Okay."
"I have to go," she said looking at her watch. I'm sorry."
"When will you be back?" Evy asked.
"I dunno, but I guarantee you will see me again."
Evy let go of Rick and went to give her a hug. "Thankyou for coming." She said knowing full well why she said it.
"I had to." She told Evy. "Well I'm off." They walked her to the living room. "Goodbye everyone." She said waving to everyone and they waved back. She walked out the door behind her, shut it. Then blinked out of site.
