Welcome to Movie Bug's Review World!

Welcome to this week's edition of Movie Bug! Each week I will provide you with a piping fresh review of either new to theatre or new release (depending on my cash flow). However, donations are accepted to further my mission to bring you the very best in cinematic reviews!

This week: Bruce Almighty

The last time I enjoyed a Jim Carrey movie was 1999's Liar Liar. It goes without saying that while I found the trailers for 'Bruce Almighty' rather entertaining, I really didn't hold out much hope for the film itself. The first time I tried to see this movie was opening night and was appalled to find that it was sold out. So of course, I had to see what all the fuss was about. So Amy, Kat and I ventured out for an afternoon at the movies.

It's the slapstick humor of Jim Carrey that we have come to know (and admit it, secretly love) which brings out the charm in this movie. After Bruce has the worst day on the planet, God's role in the world is called into question. God (Morgan Freeman) invites Bruce to control the universe for a short period of time, to see if he can do a better job. Certain misuse of the awesome responsibility ensues and you are taken on a very entertaining ride. Along the way, we see Bruce not only train his dog to use the toilet, but flush and put the seat down as well. (Now, I wonder if he can do anything with the guys I live with. They still don't have that whole concept down.) Bruce also does some pretty amazing things to the New York state lottery, the lunar patterns, and finds a certain missing 70's pop culture icon. There is also an underlying love story that is played down and over shadowed by Carrey's antics. But even though it seems he may have lost the love of his life, he finds himself. We saw great performances by Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman in this film as well. Not especially stand out characters, but very well acted. Let me say, now that I have heard/seen Morgan Freeman sing the jingle to 'The Clapper', I think my life may be complete.

No review of mine is complete; it seems, without at least one negative thing to say. Jim Carrey, at times, as with any film in which he stars, tends to try too hard. There are times you can really see him reaching. In all seriousness, this was a pretty decent movie. I did, in fact, laugh out loud, which doesn't happen at the movies all that often.

Movie Bug gives Bruce Almighty 3 ½ stars out of a possible 5.

5 stars: See it more than once

4 stars: Worth my $7.00

3 stars: Matinee Worthy

2 stars: Wait to rent

1 star: Are you out of your mind???????
