Another name for the Wizards is Istari. They are what you would call superhumans. They have great powers. They were sent from Aman in the Third Age to protect middle earth against the growing evil of Sauron. There are 5 wizards, but 2 went into the East of Middle-Earth, the other 3 are called
Saruman the White, Gandalf the Grey-later called the White, and Radagast the brown. They age very slowly, but they appear old.
Saruman the White was the highest wizard until Gandalf took his place.
They wear long robes, and have long beards and long hair, they have staffs contain magic-and usually have long pointed hats, although in the film Saruman doesn't have one.
