Sting was given to Frodo Baggins by Bilbo, the Original Rigbearer. Bilbo got the ring in The Hobbit. Engraved on the Blade and cross guard are runes in the Elven language of Sindarin that say "Magnas is my name, I am the spider's bane." -this is because Bilbo killed many spiders to save his dwarve friends. Bilbo named the sword sting-it glows blue when orcs are about.
