The greatest servant of Morgoth. His origin from the maia of Aule. He was the lieutenant of Morgoth but once Morgoth was defeated he became the greatest enemy. He could use many appearances to trick people and Elves, claiming to be a person, and most beings didn't doubt him. He watched how the Elves made their rings, and he in secret forged his own ring, more powerful than any other ring. Having the One Ring it strengthened Sauron.
After Sauron lost his ring, he could not have a physical form, but was a spirit-otherwise known as the ever watchful 'Eye of Mordor'.
In the Sindarin tongue he was named Gorthaur-meaning master of shadows and phantoms.
"Foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, mishaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of Werewolves."- The Silmarillion.
