How will
the money be spent? |
Currently
Universities in the UK are suffering from years of under-investment
and the extra money generated through the top-up fee will go to:
Research
- Extra money will buy
new resources, which will help improve teaching and
research in the universities
- The Government aim to
increase spending on research in 2005-06 by 30% compared
to the amount spent in 2002-03
- By investing in
leading research departments and universities it is hoped
that they will find a place amongst the best in the World.
Talented researchers will also be developed and rewarded.
- New standards will be
set
- A new Arts and
Humanities Research Council will be created
- Incentives to develop
emerging and support improving research will be offered
Higher
Education and Business
- Less
than 1:5 businesses tap into the skills and knowledge of
UK universities even though higher education in the UK
creates over half a million jobs and over £34 billion
for the economy
- Strengthening
the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) to encourage
non-research universities to work with employers locally,
regionally and nationally. Also to reward, via the 20
Knowledge Exchanges Network institutions working with
businesses.
Teaching
and Learning
- Excellent
teaching and learning are fundamental to Higher Education.
- Additional
funding will be given for excellence in teaching as well
as research
- Centres
of Excellence will be set up to reward good teaching and
promote the best methods
- Better
information for students this will include a new annual
survey and publications of external examiners' reports to
show quality of learning as well.
