The Protector (DVD) * * * * * (A classic example of excellence despite its bad reputation.) Jackie plays the part of Billy, an over keen, out of his league, determined cop in search of a kidnapper. Yeah ok this seams to be a very common role and a customary story line, but when he plays them so well, why change. I have watched over 30 Jackie Chan films so far, but you can never tire of his dedication to perfection. Now a friend of mine, Martin, informs me that This HK version of The Protector is Jackie's own, re-edited, re-dubbed, perfected edition. I gather the original version was made in Hollywood by an American producer, and you know how they hate Jackie to adapt things. Well in the original, I hear there was nudity, very bad language and over excessive violence. In Jackie's version, you see no sex, less swearing and not so much violence. There are of course the tonnes of fight scenes, funny faces, and well, loads of Jackie. I will point out one thing, (I don't want to say much as I don't want to spoil a great film for you all) I though Jackie had been killed again at one point, but what a relief I had when he complimented his Japanese bullet proof jacket. If its one thing I can't stand, is Jackie being killed. It almost enrages me to think the good guy gets killed. A great re-make Jackie, fans worldwide will be pleased.
