Romeo Must Die (VHS) * * * (I must point out the fact that this is not a Jackie film) This is a Jet lee film, not a Jackie Chan film, but I thought I would write a review about it because of its striking resemblance. Watching this film was like watching a remake of Jackie Chan's shanghai noon. Seeing as both films were made around the same time, its hard to tell who copied from who, but here is an example. Everyone who has watched Shanghai noon will remember the great scene where Jackie beats a bunch of outlaws with the horse show on a rope? Well In Romeo must die, Jet lee does the exact same thing with a fire hose. Its not just adjusted, changed or improved, (though I fail to see how anyone can improve on Jackie's work), it identical.
Well anyway, this is a good action film, and it was good for me to compare the works of two different actors. Although the stunts that Jet Lee does are impressive, they are none the less, fake. Anyone who can jump up in the air, do five spinning kicks before landing on the ground, has to have the aid of a cord. There are many examples of cord use in his work, so you will have to watch the film to find out for yourself.
One of the strange, but good factors of this film, is every time he beats someone, you see an internal, special effects view, of their body, showing the point of impact and the damage it has caused. Watch the film and you'll know what I mean. |
