Hua Hu and his wife planned to have a son as they already had three daughters who had already married, and Hua Hu's health was deteriorating due to old age, with an injury causing him to become slightly lame. Hua Hu's wife, biased against women, was determined to scald her baby to death on discovering it is a girl, but was stopped by Hua Hu. An 18 years was spent with Hu's wife ill-treating Mulan until one day..

A letter arrived. Hua Hu, despite his injury, was called to war, and in anger, Mulan demands the truth from Yu Chengen, a colonel. Mulan decides to take her father's place and disguises as a man. And of course, the only people who know are Chengen and a fallen immortal, Su Jili, who was the "kitchen deity" in charge of Mulan's family affairs.

Mulan runs into General Li Liang in the streets and they get into a misunderstanding. Jili, who hated Mulan for ruining his altar (she did not believe in gods and deities) started to get Mulan into a mess when she and Li fight, and a further mess when she goes to army camp.

Mulan and Jili were in the same camp, and Jili's schemes, which were part of a disagreement between the Jade emperor and the Queen mother of the heavens, ended up with them becoming good friends (Mulan kept on thinking he was insane coz of all his "immortal-mortal" talk) and eventually Jili falling for her due to her kindheartedness.

When Chengen causes the death of Marshal Li, he, in a state of remorse, left to become a Taoist priest. From his departure, Mulan learnt that the man she truly loved was Li Liang, not Yu Chengen.

And the story continues. Mulan, rising to power as a general, after saving the emperor, Jili demoted to a mortal, discovering true love, Mulan getting married to Li Liang and then getting into fits with Li Liang's mother, who becomes a "limiting factor", but out of hints (they anger each other)...

some comments

Surprising, but not so surprising. Anita yuen is older than Wing Zhao a year, and her good friend is actually Sun xing! Another surprising fact is that Wing Zhao is actually a shy man. Well, i think. I read in a forum that the late Anita Mui was the eldest of his previous girlfriends. When they broke up, Anita Mui still wanted to be friends and take photographs with him, but he was scared of her and runs away whenever he sees her. That's what it said in the forum. Some people do misunderstand that he doesn't treat Anita Mui that well...but.. people break up don't they? 

Anita Yuen is currently with Cheung Chilam, and Sun Xing with a Taiwanese celebrity, Lin Meizhen...

The problems

As in Ben yue (moon fairy), the problems lie within the love stories!!

The scriptwriter of Hua Mulan isn't very creative with the love stories here. Hua Mulan falls for Li Liang. At first they hate each other. Su Jili , who fell for Mulan earlier than that, began with hating Mulan too. Then Yiren falls for Jili. All from hatred. Misunderstandings. Sigh. Maybe the only love story that doesn't involve hatred is that between Li Liang and the Tujue(mongol) spy sent to murder Li Liang and Mulan, but that was all but a trick. Li liang never loved Zhuang Xiaoqian anyway.
