IS HERMIONE A WEREWOLF?
Since the release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, rumours are abound that Hermione is a werewolf. This article appeared in the Timaru Herald today...
A WEREWOLF?
If conspiracy theories are your thing and you are a Harry Potter fan, think about this -- Hermione might be a werewolf. Don't scoff right away, there is at least one significant clue in the latest film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and a few fans are speculating about it online as well.
First beware, there are spoilers ahead, so if you haven't seen the film or read the book it might pay not to read on. The big clue comes in the film when Professor Snape fills in at the Defense Against the Dark Arts class because it is a full moon and Professor Lupin -- a werewolf -- is otherwise indisposed.
Snape asks if anyone knows the difference between an animagus and a werewolf. Hermione's hand shoots up and, despite being ignored by Snape, gives a quick rundown on the various facts about werewolves.
Significantly, she says a werewolf "will only respond to the call of its own kind".
Later in the film as the Professor Lupin werewolf is about to attack Harry, Hermione distracts him by howling. The werewolf bounds off looking for her.
That is the most substantive clue -- and let's remember, J.K. Rowling keeps a tight rein on these films and is an expert at slipping little things like that in.
Other speculation has included the following:
» During the confrontation in the Shrieking Shack, Hermione shouts "But I trusted you!" to Professor Lupin. Trusted him with what? Her biggest secret?
» At the end of the film Lupin tells Hermione she is truly the greatest witch of her age. What had she done to deserve such an accolade? Could it have something to do with her ability to overcome the curse of the full moon?
» When Professor Lupin turns into a werewolf Hermione tries to calm him down. Yet she had earlier told everyone a werewolf would indiscriminately attack his best friend. Why did she think she had any hope of stopping Lupin from attacking? Snape interrupted before we found out more.
» We know Hermione is well read, but she instantly knew all there was to know about werewolves without having to reference anything. And in the book, while talking to Professor Lupin she says:
"It's the same kind of prejudice they have against werewolves…"

So... there it is. I dunno about some of the theories in that article, but still... pretty convincing, isn't it? What do you think?

J.K. ROWLING HAS RELEASED THE NAME OF THE SIXTH HARRY POTTER BOOK!!! Click here to go to the story on JKRowling.com. Even though I know you like my version better ;)
The 6th Harry Potter book will be called "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince". YAY!!! We have a title!
This means that it will NOT be "Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storgé, a rumour which circulated on the internet just hours before JKR put the true title on her website.
She said in the "Rumours" section of her website, "I am trying very hard not to feel offended that anyone thought this was possible. 'Storgé', for crying out loud. Come on, people, get a grip." He he he. I like her style.
However, she has told us (with no need to open the door!) that the HBP is neither Harry nor Voldemort. I have three ideas:
1) It is a new character.
2) It's TOM RIDDLE. Not Voldy, but Tom. I know that this is highly unlikely, but it would throw people off the track if she said it wasn't Lord Voldemort. Hee hee.
3) It's Hagrid. See what it says below about tying into CoS?
She also says: "Certain crucial pieces of information in book six were originally planned for 'Chamber of Secrets', but very early on (first draft of Chamber) I realised that this information's proper home was book six. I have said before now that 'Chamber' holds some very important clues to the ultimate end of the series. Not as many as six, obviously, but there is a link."
The real hard-core fans will know that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was, a very long time ago, a possible title for CoS. Something to think about...
