Fun Place to Be

Welcome to SFMOMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. We have developed a Web site that we hope you will find easy to use, informative, and beautiful.

As one of the world's most innovative museums of modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA has had an active Web presence for over seven years (a very long time, when measured in Internet time). During this period we have redesigned our site twice before, always with the idea that a museum such as ours should continually strive to improve the ways in which it serves a diverse public. And, as our collective understanding of emerging digital technologies has increased, we felt that perhaps it was time to use the Web to explore our understanding of the museum itself.

We have all become comfortable with the notion that the physical museum space—in our case a magnificent building by the Swiss architect Mario Botta—and the virtual space of the Internet work in a remarkably complementary manner. Like many who have spent time exploring the Web, we also know that there are some programs that make more sense in physical space while others exist more appropriately in this special electronic realm. Our new site takes these distinctions to heart.
