LONDON (AP) - Celebrated Irish actress Fiona Shaw was honored by Britain for her work as a stage and film performer.

Shaw, regarded as one of the finest actors in the British theater, was made an honorary Commander of the Order of British Empire, or CBE, on Thursday.

Her performances have brought her renown on the London stage, and she has three times won the Olivier Award - Britain's equivalent of the Tony Award for best actress.

But internationally she is most widely known now from the film "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - released in the United States as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - in which she played the young wizard's aunt.

The award is honorary because Shaw is not British. "Politically I feel it's a wonderful sign of the best fusion of both our countries - it's fantastic for Ireland and an honor for Irish people," Shaw said.
