Chapter 5

Vic smiles and pushes herself up and out of the chair and moves to Vin's side, half-full glass of Bourbon in her hand. She exaggerates an elegant accent. "Where would you like me, sir?"
Vin chuckles. "Now, that's a loaded question." Vic's cheeks flush. "Sit here," he says, moving his right arm from the chair arm.
Vic straddles it and, still holding the glass, places it in between her knees on the chair. Vic looks down at Vin. "What now?"
Vin sees the smirk on her face and matches it. "Just follow my lead, darlin'." Vin notices how his pulse has quickened considerably, looking at her in the exact position he imagined earlier. Before he knows what he's doing, his fingers brush the demin on Vic's thighs to her knees, and then slowly back up to her hip, his hand becoming slightly bolder with each stroke.
She can feel the warmth of him on her leg. Vic watches him and takes a deep, steadying breath. She clears her throat. "Shouldn't we, uh, wait until Danielle comes back in?"
Vin's eyes lock on hers. "Do you want me to stop?"
"You know the answer to that," she says a little breathlessly.
Vic, feeling a little bolder now herself, turns to sit side-on and drapes her legs across the chair so her feet are resting on the other chair arm, over Vin's body, not quite touching him.
Vin's right arm moves around to her back and his hand grips around her right side, while the other arm moves under her knees. He lifts her effortlessly and places her so she's sitting across his lap.
Vic's arm automatically moves around his neck as he pulls her closer. God he's beautiful, she thinks. Her eyes lock on Vin's as his left hand lightly strokes her leg, making her body tingle.
Danielle's shriek suddenly breaks the mood in the living room, and Vin quickly lifts Vic to her feet as he does the same. Vin comes around the chair and past Vic, grasping her hand, in a split second transformed to bodyguard. "Stay behind me, but do NOT let go of my hand unless I let go first." Vin doesn't wait for Vic to answer, knowing his words will be obeyed. They edge, quickly but cautiously, through the hallway, kitchen, and to the cellar door to the side of the pantry. It stands open, and Vin stops briefly to pull a butcher knife from the knife block on the counter before walking with Vic to the open door. They are both surprised at the door by a fleeing assailant, dressed in black, who stumbles as he crashes into Vin. Vin lets go of Vic and she falls back and flattens herself against the wall. Vin stumbles slightly but regains his footing quicker than his opponent. He positions himself behind the assailant and wrestles for the gun - still pried in the other man's hand. So far, he's been too disoriented to use it, and Vin intends to keep the upper hand. The man's hand is either welded to the handle or he is stronger than he appears. Vin knows there's at least one sure way to get him to drop it. Vic hears a sickening 'crack' and a sudden cry as he breaks the man's arm. The gun falls to the floor and Vin immediately kicks it towards Vic.
Vic quickly bends and picks up the gun, her eyes not leaving the two men struggling in the kitchen. She remains against the wall, not raising the gun for fear of shooting Vin. Vin has the man on his knees, and although his right arm is useless, he still puts up a fight. Just as Vic sees Vin get control of situation, Vic feels a hand clamp onto her right arm and gives a yelp of surprise as it drags her toward the cellar steps. Vin's head spins around to the door but by the time he makes a move towards it, Vic is pulled into the darkness and the cellar door slams, separating her from the one person who's kept her safe. Vic is dragged down the steps, stumbling and losing her footing. Her arm is jerked and she tumbles down the last two steps, falling on her hands and knees onto the cold cement floor. Still on the floor, she lifts her head and sees the only person in the room with her. Danielle.
