Hoping to cash in the popularity of Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 Columbia Pictures has released Not Another Teen Movie. Unlike the Scary Movie franchise however Not Another Teen Movie focuses its attention on making fun of films from the teen movie genre of the last twenty years. From the classic John Hughes films from the eighties to more recent films like Varsity Blues and American Pie no teen movie is safe once these guys get their hands on them.
The films is presented in a widescreen format thus preserving the original theatrical aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 and comes with an english 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track and a french 2 channel Dolby Digital audio track. French and english subtitles are also included.
Not one to disappoint Columbia Pictures has filled this disc out nicely with extras. There's two audio commentary tracks, a teen movie factoids track, 18 deleted scenes, three behind-the-scenes featurettes, a music video, a short film, a teen movie I.Q. test, an auditions montage, Meet The Cast promos, The Yearbook, theatrical trailers and two easter eggs.
The first audio commentary track is by director Joel Gallen and Michael G. Bender who's one of the five writers on the film. While this commentary track is enjoyable hardly any time is spent discussing how the film was made, instead they spend most of the time revealing the teen movie references throughout the film. While it is informative your time would be better spent watching the teen movie factoids track instead.
The second audio commentary track isn't any better. The commentators(cast members Chyler Leigh(Janey Briggs), Chris Evans(Jake Wyler), Jaime Pressley(Priscilla), Eric Christian Olsen(Austin) and Eric Jungmann(Ricky)) do nothing more than sing each others praises and are apparently oblivious to the fact that a commmentary track is supposed to be, at least somewhat, informative about the filmmaking process. My advice is to skip this commentary track as well.
The teen movie factoids track is a subtitle track that pops up throughout the film revealing such information as what films inspired certain scenes, teen movie references you might have missed and teen movie trivia. It's interesting and informative and worth checking out instead of the two audio commentary tracks.
The back cover claims that the disc contains 18 deleted scenes plus the original ending, which would make 19 but in fact there's 13 deleted scenes, four extended scenes and the original ending which makes 18. Of the 13 deleted scenes there's two with Randy Quaid that are hilarious and it's a shame they were cut. The scenes that are extended are Janey's makeover, Jake revealing his secret, the musical number and the scene where Jake's father wants him to date his mother. The original ending is the same as the one in the film except that it doesn't have Molly Ringwald's cameo or Ricky getting beat up by the slow clapper.
School's In Session is a series of three behind-the-scenes featurettes. Best Dressed(9:05) is about how the went about dressing the main cast, Class Clown(9:32) reveals how some of the gags like the excrement spewing toilet and Janey falling through the stairs were created plus they also discuss the choreography of the cheerleader scene and the prom scene and My Freshman Year(13:09) deals mainly with the casting of the film.
Also included is the unrated version of Marilyn Manson's music video for Tainted Love along with MTV's Making Of The Video, Joel Gallen's first short film entitled Car Ride which stars Jenny McCarthy as a hitchhiker who gets picked up by a serial killer who only kills middle aged bald men, a teen movie I.Q. test, an auditions montage, Meet The Cast promos, The Yearbook(6:43) which is a photo montage comprised of personal photos from the cast as well as publicity stills set to music and theatrical trailers for Not Another Teen Movie, The New Guy, The Animal, Saving Silverman, Big Daddy and Loser.
That's it for the special features but there are two easter eggs. For those of you who don't know easter eggs are special features that are hidden and aren't listed on the back cover. The first easter egg is hidden in the theatrical trailers page of the special features. Once there highlight the words Special Features and press the right arrow button on your remote. This will make a belly ring appear. Now press enter to see Chyler Leigh being proposed to by her boyfriend.
The second easter egg is quite disgusting. It's a video featuring takes three through eight of the kissing scene between Mia Kirshner and the old woman and runs just over four minutes. But if you want to see it anyways go to the scene selections menu and press the down arrow button on your remote. This will highlight a pair of lips on Reggie Ray's ass. Now press enter. But be warned, it's not pretty.
This is a very funny movie and besides the two audio commentary tracks a very good DVD. I definitely recommend checking it out.
