Monster DVD Review

Monster is the true life story of Aileen Wuornos, a woman many regard as the first female serial killer in history. Between December 1989 and November 1990 Aileen killed seven men who picked her up looking for sex. Charlize Theron stars as Aileen in a role that earned her a well deserved Academy Award for Best Actress.

Available from Columbia Tri-Star Monster is presented in anamorphic widescreen and comes with english audio tracks in 5.1 DTS and 5.1 Dolby Digital as well as a french 2.0 Dolby Digital audio track. Subtitles have also been included in french.

The special features include a making-of featurette, a film mixing demo, an interview with Patty Jenkins and BT, a soundtrack spot and trailers.

Based On A True Story: The Making Of Monster(14:40) is much more than just a behind-the-scenes featurette. Besides the interviews with Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci and director Patty Jenkins we also get to meet people who actually knew the real Aileen Wuornos and discover that some of the locations used in the film were the real places that Aileen used to frequent. Also included is news footage about Aileen and a look at what Charlize Theron went through to become her. Very interesting stuff.

The film mixing demo allows you to view the Funworld scene in various audio stages. You can view the scene with only the dialogue, only the effects, only the music or any combination of the three.

The interview with director Patty Jenkins and composer BT, which runs for 15:42, is all about the evolution of the film's score.

Also included are two theatrical trailers for Monster as well as theatrical trailers for Secret Window, In The Cut, Monsieur Ibrahim and Trapped, a video trailer for Wild Things 2 and a soundtrack spot for Monster.

The only thing that could of made this disc any better would be an audio commentary track by Charlize Theron, but as it stands this is an excellent film and well worth seeing as well as adding to your collection.
