Johnny English DVD Review

When the Crown Jewels are stolen the country calls upon their top secret agent to retrieve them. Actually Johnny English(played by Rowan Atkinson) is their only secret agent because all the other agents died in an explosion at the same time. Now this bumbling secret agent is on the case and he won't rest until the Crown Jewels are safe and the thief behind bars.

Available from Universal Johnny English is presented in seperate fullscreen and anamorphic widescreen(1.85:1) editions and comes with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio tracks in english, french and spanish. Subtitles have also been included in english, french and spanish.

The special features include The Making Of Johnny English featurette, 4 deleted scenes, a Spy Tips featurette, character profiles, trailers and some DVD-ROM content.

Usually making-of featurettes are nothing more than publicity pieces comprised of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and crew as they talk about how much they enjoyed working on the film and with each other but The Making-Of Johnny English (24:45) also reveals how the stunts and effects shots were done. I wouldn't recommend watching it however before having seen the film because it does contain some spoilers.

The Spy Tips featurette is rather short at just 42 seconds and features Rowan Atkinson, in character, giving you tips on how to be a good spy.

The Observation Test is a trivia game in which you are shown five clips from the film and after each clip you are asked a question regarding the scene you just saw. If you answer each question correctly you'll be shown a deleted scene. You can also view the scene by checking out the deleted scenes section if you don't feel like playing.

Wrapping up the extras are four deleted scenes(one of which features Rowan Atkinson in a second role), character profiles, theatrical trailers for The Cat In The Hat and Peter Pan, video trailers for The Rundown and Bring It On Again and some DVD-ROM content.

Johnny English is comedy's answer to James Bond but while it does deliver some laughs it is rather predictable and at times feels like the Jackie Chan film The Tuxedo. I wouldn't recommend buying this disc but it may be worth a rental.
