New Line, which took over the series starting with Jason Goes To Hell, have given fans what they want and have filled this disc out nicely with extras which is a welcome change from Paramount's bare bones release of the first eight films in the series.
The film is presented in a widescreen format and is enhanced for 16X9 televisions and comes with an english 5.1 DTS audio track, an english 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track, and a french 2 channel Dolby Surround audio track. English subtitles are also included.
The special features include an audio commentary track with director Jim Isaac, writer Todd Farmer and producer Noel Cunningham, The Many Lives Of Jason Voorhees featurette, The Making Of Jason X featurette, Jump to a Death, theatrical trailers and DVD-ROM content.
First up is the audio commentary track with director Jim Isaac, writer Todd Farmer and producer Noel Cunningham which is worth listening to as the guys make fun of each other while revealing the process of making the film, their troubles, or lack there of, with the MPAA and stories from the set.
The best extras on this disc however are the two original documentaries entitled The Many Lives Of Jason Voorhees and By Any Means Necessary:The Making Of Jason X.
The Many Lives Of Jason Voorhees runs for 29:52 and is a history of the Friday The 13th franchise as told by various people, including Kane Hodder who's played Jason since part 7, who were involved in making these films.
By Any Means Necessary:The Making Of Jason X, which runs for 17:28, is not your standard on-set interviews mixed in with behind-the-scenes footage which seems to be the norm for a lot films. Instead the filmmakers show you every aspect that went into making this film. From the process of turning the film to digital to the stunts and computer effects to Uber Jason's costume nothing is left unrevealed.
Another cool feature is Jump To A Death which is kinda like the Jump To A Nightmare feature on the A Nighmare On Elm Street DVD's which allows you to access any death scene from the movie. Or if you want you can see them all by selecting play all.
Rounding off the special features on the disc are the orignal theatrical trailers for Jason X, Blade II, Final Destination and A Nightmare On Elm Street. If you happen to have a DVD-ROM you can also read the original screenplay, visit the film's original website or go to the Hot Link which is a link to the latest promotions from New Line.
This is by far the best disc available in the Friday The 13th series and if you're a fan of the series and don't already own it you should rush out and get it.
One can only hope that Paramount will take a look at how well New Line has released this film and Jason Goes To Hell, which includes a director's cut, and re-release the first eight films with more than just a theatrical trailer as an extra feature.
