The Goonies DVD Review

After finding a treasure map a group of kids who call themselves the goonies decide to go on one last adventure before their housing project is demolished. Along the way they run into a family of criminals, booby-traps and adventure galore. Based on a story by Steven Spielberg The Goonies is a wonderful film that the whole family will enjoy and it's available to own on DVD.

Available from Warner Bros. The Goonies is presented in a letterboxed widescreen format that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. There's two english audio tracks(Dolby Surround 5.1 and Dolby Surround Stereo), a french Dolby Surround Stereo track and a spanish mono track. It also comes with subtitles in english, french, spanish and portuguese.

The special features included are a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of The Goonies, a feature-lenght audio commentary track(with hidden video treasures) by director Richard Donner and selected cast members, a Cyndi Lauper music video, outtakes and the film's theatrical trailer.

The Making Of The Goonies is listed on the back cover as being a documentary but at just 6:47 it's really more of a featurette. It starts off with Steven Spielberg explaining what the movie's about followed by behind-the-scenes footage intercut with on-set interview footage from director Richard Donner and cast members Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Anne Ramsey who played the Fratelli's.

The audio commentary track is by director Richard Donner and cast members Sean Astin(Mikey), Josh Brolin(Brand), Jeff Cohen(Chunk), Corey Feldman(Mouth), Kerri Green(Andy), Martha Plimpton(Stef) and Ke Huy Quan(Data) and features occasional video footage of them recording the commentary track as the film plays at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The group spends most of the time reminiscing and remembering cast members who have since past away but never really get into how the movie was made from a technical stand point. It's also kind of interesting to see how a commentary track is recorded.

The Cyndi Lauper music video for The Goonies 'R' Good Enough(12:04) is more of a short film set to music and has Cyndi and her parents having to sell their garage to a bunch of wrestlers(Rowdy Roddy Piper, Classy Freddie Blassie, The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff) but as they're emptying it Cyndi discovers a hole in the wall that leads to a secret cave. Once inside she finds a map and the goonies and they head off to find pirate treasure but get captured by the pirates(also played by the wrestlers) and brought onboard their ship where they're chained up. They manage to break free, find the treasure and escape but Cyndi is unable to make the wrestlers sell them back the garage so she makes Andre The Giant appear and he chases them away.

The outtakes are actually three deleted scenes and it's easy to see why they were cut. Also included is the film's theatrical trailer.

While there isn't that many special features they definetely have a nostalgic feel to them and that along with the wonderful transfer and the fact that this is a wonderful film that the whole family will enjoy makes this a DVD well worth adding to your collection.
